Around 11 pm last night it started to drizzle.  Rain on 26th January is not an unheard of, or unexpected thing.  But still, it can dampen the spirit of celebration at this  annual event of national importance.  And so the concern is always there.  When I woke up early this morning, it had drizzled all night long.  Along with the continuing cold temperatures, the clouds and the precipitation foretold a dreary day.  Literally, raining on the parade.

Greetings to all on today’s celebration of the Republic Day of India.  65 years ago today, the Constitution of India was brought into effect, and our nation was declared a Republic.

Despite the wet weather, the things all started and went ahead as per schedule, although when the dignitaries arrived, some were using umbrellas.  As the day marched towards forenoon, the drizzle faded away, making way for a great parade.  Rajpath, the main thoroughfare along which the parade starts, continued to carry a wet look.  I watched the parade in parts on the TV.  I was waiting for the end of the parade when the folk dancing troupes come on.  I recall having seen in earlier years, the dancers either performing barefoot or wearing socks.  But today I noticed that all dancers were wearing light shoes, given the weather and the rainy conditions.

The parades puts on show a collection of social, cultural and martial aspects of our country, which ought to be a matter of pride for us citizens.  As it happens every year, the commentators on the radio and TV channels speak volumes about each army contingent, about the display floats that represent participating states, as well as some institutions like ministries and government departments.  The commentary and the display makes me emotional, both with pride, as well as with regret.  But I will not dissect this discussion further here today.

Back in the 1930s and 40s, when the British were the ‘official’ rulers of this country, this emotion of pride, mixed with indignation about being enslaved by a foreign people, played itself out in many ways, with the people and in the society.  The film media was equally seized with this expression, and it wasn’t uncommon that themes of patriotic fervor found their way into the film storylines, sometimes overtly and most of the times covertly, disguised in many forms.  And in relation to this, it is also not uncommon to find songs of patriotic flavor in many to most films of that era.

I present this song today, from the 1943 film ‘Muskuraahat’.  This is a simple but a lovely song in the voice of Parul Ghosh and accompanying chorus.  Music is by C Ramchandra and the lyrics are by Ishwar Chandra Kapoor.  The film was produced under the banner of Saubhagya Pictures and is directed by Dwarka Khosla, Vedi and Ram Kamlani.  The main cast of actors includes Motilal, Vanmala, Hari Shivdasani, Ghori and Leela Misra.

With a salute to the spirit of this country, and with greetings again, to all.
Listen and enjoy.
