Yesterday this blog touched the mark of 10, 800 with a rare song that was not available on internet till that time. Earlier in the day, which also happened to be Suraiyya’s death anniversary, two Suraiyya songs were discussed that were not available on internet till then.
So it can be seen that this musical bandwagon, during its onward movement is helping discover songs not available online till then and that way we in this blog are contributing our mite in preserving and recording the history of HFM.
We are not alone, nor are we the first of course. There are many people who are making contributions in the field.
HFGK, a mega accomplishment of Mr Harmandir Singh Hamraz is the seminal and definitive book that all HFM enthusiasts look up to, when we want to know about movies and the songs contained in them. Publication of his five volumes brohaught about a revolution in the way one looked at the volume of songs in HFM. Prior to the publication of these volumes, it was believed that all major playback singers had sung songs far in excess of 20,000. Even Guiness Books of world records contained such figures.
HFGK changed all that. Now we know that the major singers have sung not more than a few thousands song each throughout their careers, with only one artist reaching five figures. We also came to know that the total number of HFM songs recorded between 1931 to 1980 were only about 60,000 or so.
Armed with the above information, it became easy for music lovers to search for songs and make artistwise analysis of songs.
With the widespread availability of internet, it has become possible for music lovers to share information as well as musical content. And that has revolutionised matters as never before. Now one can come across songs that one never knew existed. And one can locate songs that one heard decades ago and forgot all about them. This happens in our blog quite regularly.
Internet technologies have brought likeminded people together through various blogs, sites, facebook groups etc. The information and music sharing that takes place has helped conssiderably in adding to the existing knowledge on the subject. Every music lover is member/visitor of one or more of these online resources.
Personally I discovered internet resources like facebook etc quite late. I have become an active facebook user only for the last one year. It has helped me become members of some music groups on facebook.
Then there are some sites run by some music lovers that are must visits. Mr Surjit Singh’s Site is easily the biggest online resource on HF as well as HFM. The sheer quantity of this content is mind boggling. He is friends with lots and lots of music collectors and he gets music from these collectors which he then uploads in his site.
I notice that these days he is uploading contents supplied by Mr Roberto, a remarkable music collector of Surinam/ Netherland origin. These are songs from early days of HFM, and these are all rare songs, which are not available online elsewhere.
on going through the songs uploaded, I came across songs of a movie called “Swarg Ki Seedhi”(1935). This movie was directed by A R Kardar for National Movietone, Lahore and it had Khursheed, Khadim, Umrao Zia Begam, Prithviraj, Gyan Singh etc in it.
This movie is known today as being the first movie of Ghulam Haider as a music director. I was aware of this movie being Ghulam Haider’s debut movie but I had never thought that I will be able to listen to songs from this movie. But now thanks to Mr Roberto and Mr Surjit Singh, it is possible for us to listen to songs from the debut movie of Ghulam Haider. Likewise, it is now possible to listen to rare songs from the earlier talkies of 1930s.
This gives us an opportunity to add songs from movies that are not yet represented in the blog.
Here is a song from “Swarg Ki Seedhi”(1935), also known as “Sati Vimla”. This song is sung by Umrao Zia Begam. Ghulam Haider is the music director.
Lyricist is not known. It can easily be guessed that the song was picturised on Umrao Zia Begam herself. Umrao Zia Begam incidentally later married Ghulam Haider.
So here is a song from Ghulam Haider’s debut movie as a music director.
Song-Tum bin naiyya kaun taraawe (Swarg Ki Seedhi)(1935) Singer-Umrao Zia Begam, MD-Ghulam Haider
