So, yesterday afternoon we receive this message from Peevesie’s Mom. There is a Chitalkar song. A friend of hers is looking for it. As it was revealed in later part of the thread, this friend had heard this song on the ‘Bhoole Bisre Geet’ program on Radio Ceylon (now called the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation). When he switched on the radio, the song had already started so he missed the introductory information, like film name and artist etc. Singer he could recognize from the voice. It is Chitalkar (C Ramchandra).
Now the one line that was communicated by this friend to Peevesie’s Mom, and in turn, by Peevesie’s Mom to us was – “Kaun ho tum mujhe giraya hain..o goriya”. So we started the hunt. Of course searching for ‘Kaun Ho Tum’ and ‘C Ramchandra’ immediately brought up the Mahendra Kapoor song from film ‘Stree’ (1961) – “Kaun Ho Tum Kaun Ho Kaun Ho”. And we were definitely not looking for this song. So based on the little information we had, we drew a blank. There is no song sung by Chitalkar in Hindi films that starts with “Kaun Ho Tum. . .”.
So I wrote back to Peevesie’s Mom, to confirm whether this line is part of the ‘mukhdaa’ or is it one of the lines inside the ‘antaraas’. The communication was becoming international by now. Khyati Behn sent a message from Los Angeles writing about fishing, and how to let the big fishes take on the difficult hunts and letting the small fishes to be lazy, and swim in the schools. 😉 That was last night (India time.)
Then today morning, Arun ji wrote back, saying that he had tried too, without success. And also specifically clarified that the Geet Kosh can help with such searches, but the words should be in the ‘mukhdaa’ of the song. If the words are not in the ‘mukhdaa’ then the Geet Kosh will not be of any help.
Then Atul ji’s email came, with the suggestion that we assign some home work. There are 82 songs sung by Chitalkar on the blog. Well, yes, the number surprised me too. Of all the artists who are known more for being music directors, he is the only one with such a large number of songs sung, and as the numbers show, very close to getting a century of songs sung by him, on this blog very soon. But I digress. Atul ji’s home work assignment was to study the lyrics of these 82 songs, and check if this line has appeared in any song posted. He was actually very “helpful” to provide the link by which we can go to the list of these 82 songs on the blog.
The suggestion seems to quieten down the excitement of the hunt. Quite characteristically, no further responses came on this email thread. Till about four hours later. We got another email from Peevesie’s Mom, who had communicated with her friend once again, and she reconfirmed to all of us that the friend was very sure this line is part of the mukhda.
Having put down a good lunch by this time, I was already on the lookout again. Of course, I also sidestepped the home work assignment from Atul ji, and started analyzing the problem. By the time the email from Peevesie’s Mom landed confirming that the given clue is definitely part of the mukhda, I was now convinced otherwise – that it is not. Else it would have been listed in GK, fully or partly. And I was already poring over the Geet Kosh pages, looking for songs sung by Chitalkar, and was trying to see if any connection could be made with the song title listed in GK, and the clue line provided. However, not making much headway.
Then another thing struck me. I was all the time concentrating on the decade of 1950s, i.e. volume 3 of GK. Just on hunch, I kept it aside and picked up volume 4. And quite contrary to my impressions, not only that there are films all the way up to 1971 for which C Ram has given the music direction, but there is a fairly good number of songs he has sung in this decade, for his own music and for other music directors. E.g. he has sung a duet with Kishore Kumar (in film ‘Daal Mein Kaala’ (1964); not yet posted on blog). Ah, but I digress again.
As I scanned the pages, I hit the first solo song of this decade, as listed in the GK. The year – 1965; the film – ‘Hum Deewaane’. The mukhdaa of the song – “Gori Tu Ne Mera Dil Churaaya Hai”. My page-flipping finger paused, the mind looked at the title line of this song, and then read the clue line provided, once again. I got a feeling of a tiny LED starting to glow at the end of the tunnel. The two lines rhymed – “Gori Tu Ne Mera Dil Churaaya Hai” and “Kaun Ho Tum Mujhe Giraaya Hai. . . O Goriya”. And the word ‘Gori’ in the beginning of the title line, was kind of similar to what was provided as the closing word ‘Goriya’ of the clue line. The LED now started blinking on top of my head. And I had this feeling I had reached the end of the hunt.
But to cofirm, I had to listen to this song. I spent another half hour or so, trying to search this song in my collection. Checked the film lists, the lists by year, set of songs by C Ram, searched for Anand Bakshi. I realized this song was not in my collection. So finally, gave a call to my collector friend, Zafar Bhai and explained the situation. By now, he is quite familiar with such ‘out of the blue’ emergency requests from me. So yes, he has the records of this film, and yes, this song is in his collection.
And so, I said please to him five times and requested him to digitize and send me by email. After fifteen or twenty minutes, the bulky email arrived. I immediately copied it into the hard disk, and played the song. The song went on to play, and as it progressed further, my heart started to sink. All my enthusiasm evaporated, well almost. Because the song was nearing the end and nowhere was the clue line appearing. Not as the second line in the mukhdaa, not in the first antaraa. The second antaraa was also coming to close. Still no “Kaun Ho Tum. . .”.
Till the last line of the second antaraa played. And then, it was WHOOSH!!! there it is. Goodness, Peevesie’s Mom ji, this clue line is the very last line of the second antaraa. I can’t begin to imagine at what point did your friend started listening to this song, and how did this clue line became the mukhda. And one very important correction. The line does not start with ‘Kaun Ho’, but the words are ‘Ho Na Ho’. As you will listen, it becomes clearer.
However, very elated and satisfied, an afternoon that luckily ended in success.
Some details about the film and the song. The film is produced under the banner of Young India Entertainer, and is directed by Bhagwan. The cast of actors includes Mumtaz, Chandrashekhar, Bhagwan, Helen, Iftikhar, Anwar, Agha, Maruti, Rajan Haksar, Kundan, Prem Sagar, Rajan Kapoor, and Kanchanmala etc. The 8 songs of this film are written by Anand Bakshi. And the music is by Anna Sahab – well, that is the name used by C Ram for this film. The song is a drunkard song, and clue line now makes sense, in the context – “Kaun Ho Tum Mujhe Giraaya Hai”.

The clues were mostly wrong. The words were wrong- there was no “Kaun ho tum” in the lyrics. Location of the words were wrong, The words were towards the fag end of the song rather than in the mukhda.
I wonder how the friend of Peevesie’s mom got the singer right. 🙂 We would have understood if he would have got even the singer wrong. 😉
Despite giving misleading clues, this song was discovered. But then Sudhir jee spent his time searching for this song which was originally planned to be spent on writing his next episode of Mumbai gangout. 🙂
I am happy that the song was located within 24 hours, or else Sudhir jee would have spend sleepless nights thinking about this song.
The next time when someone listens to a song in SLBC, ask him/her the date when this song was broadcast. This will save time because we have SLBC enthusiasts who upload these broadcasts on YT daily with full details.

Thanks for not disappointing me. The idea of making “younger one” 😉 work was solely to keep him HEALTHY. Nowadays young ones are more concerned and hence focused on their physical health but then it’s elder’s duty to give them more mental exercise to keep their mind sharp. 😆

Actually after reading Peevesie’s Momji’s email and then responding of me being a small fish in a pond, I also started my homework on the net. Could go through few songs of Chitalkarji’s but then caught up with son’s homework and then his other activity. Raat ko nischinta se so gayi, pata tha ki subah mein natija to milne waala hai aapse. 🙂

i am extremely sorry to have put the whole team on a witch hunt. but believe me i had no clue it was so difficult. i made a futile attempt whole of sunday before involving all the diggaz in our grp.and when i got Sudhirji’s mail in the evening i accessed on my mobile but cudn’t c the post as i kept losing connectivity. and after returning i sat to check it out and BSNL left me high and hanging. but maine bhi haar nahin maani. and managed to read the post will listen to the song tomorrow. if i play the song at this hour (as it is my husband has showed me the clock and its position 😉 )

Great detective work Sudhir Ji!
I am building a searchable database of songs and after reading this blog I thought I would see how good is my database.
For those of you who understand SQL, I tried the following query:
SELECT Songs.Title, Films.Film, Films.Year
FROM Songs INNER JOIN Films ON Songs.FID = Films.FID
WHERE (Songs.Singers=’chitalkar’ or Songs.Singers=’C. Ramchandra’) AND instr(title,’gori’) >= 1
and I was amazed: there are only two songs that came up from my search:
1. Koi Shyam Rang Koi Gori…Par Aisi Koi Hai Naa FIlm: Veena (1948)
2. Gori Tune Mera Dil Churaya Hai Film: Hum Diwane (1965)
The search is also made easier by the fact that there are not too many solo songs by Chitalkar. I found only 20 solo songs by him in the years > 1950
My database was also able to find the youtube link to the second song. I am still trying to cleanup the database and this site has been a tremendous help to me in my effort. Seeing the Herculean effort put up by the “Team Atul”, I have been inspired to continue working on my search engine, which has been my passion for the last 20 years.
