‘Sawaal’ 1982 was produced by Yash Chopra under his own banner ‘Yash Raj films’. It was directed by Ramesh Talwar. Music of this film was by Khaiyyam Saab and lyrics by Majrooh Saab. It had an impressive star cast including Sanjeev Kumar, Waheeda Rehman, Shashi Kapoor, Poonam Dhillon, Randhir Kapoor & Swaroop Sampat (in special appearance), Prem Chopra, Jagdish Raj, Yunus Parvej, Madan Puri, Mac Mohan and Helen, Padma Khanna and Kalpana Iyer.
Sanjeev Kumar is a smuggler and his wife Waheeda Rehman is aware of this but his children Randhir Kapoor and Poonam Dhillon are not aware of this fact. Shashi Kapoor is an honest Police Officer who has vowed to destroy the smugglers and wipe out this social menace. He falls in love with none other than Poonam Dhillon. Very soon Shashi Kapoor gets to know about his real target i.e. ‘Sanjeev Kumar. ‘Sanjeev Kumar also tries to clear him out but fails and the truth is out. Meanwhile before the real confrontation can happen, Randhir Kapoor gets killed in Police-raids on their go-downs which he visits on a call from Yunus Parvez that the Police have raided the godown. Now Yunus Parvez communicated the message without knowing who had actually lifted the phone, since everyone is busy for Randhir’s engagement party (engagement with Swaroop Sampat). Shattered after his son’s death Sanjeev Kumar decides to surrender to Police, but Prem Chopra who is also his partner gets to know about it and kidnaps his wife and daughter. Sanjeev Kumar himself takes the call while Shashi Kapoor also reaches for the climax. Both of them fight to save the mother and daughter in which Sanjeev Kumar gets killed while he saves Shashi Kapoor. Meanwhile Police force also reaches the place and Prem Chopra is arrested.
After Silsila – 1981 I think Yash Chopra had taken a short-break from Direction and his next directorial venture was Mashaal – 1984. In between there were two films under Yash Raj Films banner ‘Nakhuda’ in 1981 and ‘Sawaal’ in 1982. Music for both of these films was composed by Khayyam Saab.
I remembered the film Nakhuda as it was discussed among our friend circle during those days. And the performance of Kulbhushan Kharbanda was also praised. But I get it confused with Bulandi (Raaj Kumar). So when I ordered for the DVD of Nakhuda it came in combination with the film Sawaal. I have watched one of them till now.
This film had as many as seven songs sung by Lata Mangeshkar, Nitin Mukesh, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle and Dilraj Kaur, Anwar and Pamela Chopra. Out of this one sung by Anwar & Lata Mangeshkar is not included in the film.
This song happens in a Disco-club where Shashi Kapoor, on an official information about a deal between one of the world’s renowned smuggler –Robert Bandy (character’s name in the film, I do not know the actor’s name) with his Indian counterpart is going to happen, reaches there. Who is this big smuggler that Robert is going to meet? is the big question for Shashi Kapoor! But very soon he gets to know that it is Sanjeev Kumar and what his real business is.
Helen as cabaret dancer is performing this song on screen.
After listening this song I remember that it was among the other disco songs that were generally heard on loud speakers in those days. But I was not aware that it was Khayyam Saab’s composition.
