18th September 2015 is the birthday of Kaifi and Shaukat Azmi’s daughter Shabana Azmi. She turns 66 on this day.
There are many children who are known as so-and-so’s child and there are many children who make a place for themselves in public eye and then the parents are called so-and-so’s parents. That means Shabana Azmi’s Pehchaan need not be as Kaifi and Shaukat Azmi’s daughter. She is a persona by herself. Being the poet’s daughter or the veteran stage actress’s daughter only explains her artistic leanings.
Anyone who has been a Hindi movie addict (like yours truly), knows that Shabana made her debut into bollywood through Shyam Benegal’s Ankur in 1974 although she first signed K.A.Abbaas’ Faasla upon graduating from FTII Pune.
Ankur got her, her first national award. Then she went on to win many more national awards for acting and including three years in a row from 1983 to 1985 for Arth with Smita Patil and Kulbhushan Khabanda as co stars; Khandar with Naseeruddin Shah as co star and Paar with Naseeruddin Shah again. In between all this she also made a place for herself in masala films like Fakira, Lahu Ke Do Rang, Swarag Narak, Parvarish etc. The 90s saw her in some middle of the road (meaning neither Art nor Masala) movies like Saaz by Sai Paranjpe, Mrityudand by Prakash Jha; Makdee by Vishal Bharadwaj and in two of the elemental trilogy by Deepa Mehta- Earth Water and Fire; she acted in Earth and Fire. She is still very active in films along with being a social activist.
Now the song today is from Sai Paranjpe’s Saaz where she plays a playback singer. There are so many melodies in this movie that it is difficult to choose specially when one likes all the songs in the movie. But here is a lullaby (lori) in Kavita Krishnamurthy’s voice which is written by Javed Akhtar, Raj Kamal was the music director.

There are 4 MDs Yeshwant Deo and Zakir Hussain(both one film wonder) Rajkamal and Bhupen Hazarika a trendsetter, which is nowadays de rigueur.

Amar Talwar is the actor who is shown to be the music director in this clip. and this song was composed by Rajkamal. (atulji has mentioned this in the post itself)

‘Saaz’ was supposed to be based on life of 2 singing sisters! Shabana (Asha) & Aruna Irani (Lata) were 2 sisters. Composer shown in this clip supposed to be OP & the role of RD was played by Zakir Hussein!
