Sureeli Suman – 1
———————
Since long time I have been contemplating to start this new series, as there are many many Film and Non-Film songs of Suman Kalyanpur yet to be covered in our Blog.

I do not think that any Atulite remembers that my second guest contribution on 4th February 2013 to this Blog was a Non-Film song by Suman Kalyanpur. I do not wish to repeat the details of her singing career and her contented life, which can be read from the above link.

Sometime back, ‘Sargam’ had arranged her show, where I met her and had long talks with her about her music. She is so simple-hearted person that she hardly remembers details about even her famous songs! She mentioned that during those days, she used to go to the recording studio, rehearse the song, record the final take and go home. (un-attached like a ‘yogini’)

On our request to sing some of her songs, she obliged and sang few lines, stopping abruptly as she would not remember the lyrics. The organisers then played same song from her record, and we were surprized that her original voice and what she sang there, had hardly changed after so many years!

The Master of Ceremonies for that function was a Marathi columnist Mohini Varde (Sister of Suhasini Mulgaonkar). She being Suman’s Childhood friend told us an anecdote about their school days. During the recess, girls used to rush out in their school yard, to pick-up fallen mangoes, pecked by birds. Mohini said “I had mangoes pecked by crows and Suman had mangoes pecked by cuckoos, and that must be the secret of her sweet voice.”

This famous Gazal by Mirza Ghalib has been sung by so many famous and new comer Gazal singers, but Suman in her superb style gives it a totally new dimension. I do not know exactly in which year it was recorded, but during that period HMV and other gramophone companies used to produce Non-Film Geet and Ghazals by various singers in the format of extended play records. (Eps of 7 minutes duration each side) The Music for this Gazal is set by Iqbal Gill, popularly known as Chhote Iqbal.

Bharatbhai,

This series was long overdue It is good that you found time to start this series in the midst of your ‘Jaidev’ Series.
Looking forward to more songs under ‘Sureeli Suman’ .

Is there any website where one can hear undisturbed old songs for hours and hours? Once it was Smashits.com but it is no more. There are some films whose all songs are good, like Aan, Awara, Andaz, Anokhi Ada, Dard, Anmol Ghadi and many more. Atul Saheb can you do something like this?
