I have been longing to share some posts which have been delayed much due to one reason or the other. This song post is one of them. And I can number it as a ‘vacation nostalgia-post-1’, because I have to share one more in this series.

I had this song in my vague memories. But it had been repeatedly striking my mind since last two and half years now. The main reason for this is my repeated visits to ‘college-campus’ during past few years.

No! No! , I have not joined any college or studies!

It is because of my daughters who are studying, and I get opportunities to visit the campus for ‘parent-teacher meetings’ or while going to pick-up my daughters to bring them home during their vacations and also while taking them them back to their destination after the vacation is over.

As a student I could not get the opportunity to study in a college or joining a regular college, because I took up a job after 12th and simultaneously enrolled for distance education.

I remember that in our times, i.e. when I was studying in 10th (1983), the 11th class students were referred to as ‘college’ students, I think, and actually until a few years back I was under the impression that 11th and 12th standard students are college students, until my daughters clarified this matter to me and cleared my confusion. 🙂

So, when my elder daughter joined a college at Vallabh Vidyanagar (Distt-Anand, Gujarat), I get to vicariously experience the atmosphere in colleges, campus area and the hostel areas there. I was excited about it and I started to look for the images of college life that had formed in my mind over the years based mainly on what was shown in our films.

At that time we were living in Kachchh district of Gujarat and I used to accompany my daughter during her journeys back to home from college and travelling back again after the vacation were over. Vacations would invaraibly bring the atmosphere of joy, excitement, and relief for students whether they were local residents or belonging to far-off places.

And for celebrating college vacations, I could not have thought of any other song than the song that is being discussed today.

Only one song from this film Khandan has been posted on our blog.

‘Khaandaan-1979’ (that is how HFGK spelled has spelled it) was produced by Sibte Hasan Rizvi for ‘New World Enterprises’, Bombay. It was directed by Anil Ganguly. It had Jeetendra, Sulakshana Pandit, Bindu, Sujit Kumar, Nirupa Roy, A.K.Hangal, Dina Pathak, Jairaj, Jankidas, Rakesh Roshan and Bindiya Goswami in Guest appearance, Dinesh Hingoo, Raj Kishore, Pinchu Kapoor, Rajan Haksar, Birbal, Dhumal, Mohan Choti, Amal Sen, Roshni, Brijendra Mohan (Maujiram), Maya Devi, Maqbool.

Story and Dialogues of this film was written by Omar Khayyam Saharanpuri and its Screenplay was written by Nubendu Ghosh. Lyrics for this film were penned by Naqsh Lyallpuri and music was composed by Khayyam Saab.

As per HFGK this film had a total of Six songs. One of these songs, viz. ‘maana teri nazar mein’ was recorded for this film, but was excluded from this film.
This song was later included in the 1981 film ‘Ahistaa-Ahistaa’. LP records for both the movies ‘Khaandaan-1979’ and ‘Ahistaa-Ahistaa-1981’ has this song ‘mana teri nazar mein…’ included in them.

All the six songs of “Khaandaan”(1979) are solo songs. Two songs each are sung by Kishore Kumar and Sulakshana Pandit, and one each by Lata Mangeshkar and Nitin Mukesh.

All of us are aware of the most popular and melodious ‘ye mulaaqaat ik bahaana hai’ by Lata Mangeshkar, and this is the only song of this movie discussed on the blog so far.

Plot summary of this film on IMDB is given below (I have added the actor/actresses names in bracket, beside their character name in the film).

The Srivastav family consists of Gaurishankar (Jairaj), his wife, Savitri (Nirupa Roy), two sons, Vikas (Sujit Kumar) and Ravi (Jeetendra), who lead a poor lifestyle in a village in India. When the sons grow up, Vikas gets married to wealthy Nanda (Bindu), while Ravi continues his education in college. Ravi, who woos attractive Usha (Sulakshana Pandit), and hopes to marry her, often, gets into trouble, stealing hens for example, earning the wrath of his father, Gaurishankar is nearing retirement, while Vikas is unable to get employment.

When Vikas gets an offer, he must deposit Rs.5000, which the family must come up within 4 days. The family does not come up with this amount, as a result Nanda borrows this money from her uncle, and Vikas gets a job. Then Gaurishankar gets news that Ravi has been arrested by the Police for stealing Rs.5000 from his employer, as a result he goes into shock, has a stroke which leaves him paralyzed. Ravi is tried in Court, found guilty, and sentenced to 3 months in jail. This news ends up killing Gaurishankar. When Ravi completes his sentence, and returns home, he is told by Vikas that his mother blames him for Gaurishankar’s death and does not wish to see him anymore, and he finds out that Usha is to get married to a man named Rakesh(Rakesh Roshan), the son of Dinanath. Ravi re-locates to Bombay, gets a job, earns well, and starts sending money-orders to his mom, as well as becomes the object of affection of Sandhya, the daughter of his employer. Ravi is unaware that his mother knows that it was not he who stole the Rs.5000, but choose to remain silent, letting him take the blame. Watch what happens when Usha meets with Ravi and the impact this has on both of them.

I had not watched this movie earlier and I am also not aware of how it fared at the box office. Knowledgeable readers may throw more light on the movie and its other trivia.

I was eager to know when this song actually happens in the movie or the sequences behind this song. And this was made easy when I start watching this movie online. This song takes place immediately after the titles of the movie.

In the background of the titles students are seen writing their examinations, as one could see the Exam Supervisor there. (It is almost the time for the semester exams to be over by now in most of the colleges as well 🙂 )

And , so, after exams it is ‘holidays’ for all … so our hero Jeetendra (who must be above 35 then and seems older to me for a college going student) and his friends are in full celebration mood, ‘sharaarat mood’, and writing with chalks on the walls and floors of the college – ‘chhutti’, ‘aaj se college band’.. etc etc (now after watching this I remember that our group of cricket playing friends would indulge in similar activities (painting the roads with chalks) after India had won the ‘world-cup’ in 1983 and we had done rounds of streets in the colony where we were staying at that time … )

Coming back to today’s song let us now enjoy this composition from my favorite composer Khayyam Saab sung by Kishore Kumar in his inimitable style and lyrics of which are penned by Naqsh Lyallpuri.

(Till sending of this post I have watched more than half of the movie online, and I can say that the movie keeps you engaged and it can be watched at least once if you are interested in watching old ‘family drama’ movies)

Thanks for posting this song, Avinashji. It brings back memories.

I remember watching this film as a teenager – and liking this song. It was catchy. 🙂

Then, one day at my work in the 1980s, I was singing this song to myself. One of my colleagues said “arrey, aisa koi gaana nahin hai…you are making it up. What is this “aaj se college band hai?””.
I tried to convince him – but I only remembered Jeetendra in the song. Nothing else. In those days, we had no net to check. So I just could not convince him at all. 🙂

Anyway, now seeing this song on the blog brought back those memories. 🙂
