After completing all the songs of 1969 film ‘Jiyo Aur Jeene Do’ with the help from my generous friend from the capital of India, I, now, come to 1969 film ‘Sapna’. Directed by R Kaushik under the banner of ‘Lalmani Films, Bombay’ (sorry, it was still Bombay then) this social film’s star-cast consisted of Dilip Raj, Nivedita, Jagdip, Mohan Choti, Manmohan Krishna, K N Singh, Bhagwan Sinha, Preetam, Ganesh, Rinku, Bela Bose, Meenakshi, Sarita Devi, Saadhna Khote, Kalpalata, Ameena etc. B N Mangal’s lyrics were set to music by Genius Jaidev.
While most of the Music Directors during that period depended on the voices of prevalent popular playback singers like Lata, Asha, Geeta, Rafi, Mukesh, Manna Dey etc, Jaidev has made liberal use of many known or less-known singers in his films.
There were six songs in this film according to HFGK, and out of which I have two songs ready with me. I will have to shout ‘SOS’ to all my friends (and foes too) for the remaining four songs by Rafi, Krishna Kalle, Manna Dey and Lakshmi Shankar.
The song under discussion has Usha Mangeshkar’s sweet voice and any music lover who has heard few of Jaidev’s composition will notice the ‘typical Jaidev touch’ on the song. ‘Saanjh Bhayee …’ is based on Raga ‘Kalavati’ and the interlude music for the song is created by using typically pure ‘classical and Hindustani’ instruments.
