Today’s song is from the film Safar-46. It is sung by Chitalkar and Binapani Mukherjee.

C.Ramchandra’s first Hindi film as a composer was ‘Sukhi jeevan’-42, which he got because of his friend Master Bhagwan. Soon he got another film ‘Hanso Hanso aye duniyawalon’,made by Saugbhagya Pictures of Director Dwaraka Khosla. It was immediately followed by another film, ‘Muskurahat’ from the same company. Master Bhagwan also gave him two stunt films. Meanwhile, during this period, C.Ramchandra had got married to Ratan Thakur, daughter of his landlady, on 19-11-1942.

By now, he was known as a promising new composer. One day he was called by Director Jayant Desai-owner of Jayant Desai Productions. C Ramchandra was hired by him on a salary of Rs. 300 pm. At the time of signing the contract, Jayant Desai said, ‘tumhara naam kuch ordinary lagta hai’.

C Ramchandra said, “to kya karen ? ”

Jayant Desai, “Badal daalo. Kuchh naya filmi naam le lo. ”

About this incident, in one of the interviews, C Ramchandra said, “Actually I felt that he wanted to say, “tumhara naam bilkul ‘ghaati ‘ ( Local Marathi) lagta hai ‘. If he had said it, I would have rejected his offer. However, taking a screen name was not a bad idea. Who knows, it might change my Luck. I suddenly remembered V.Shantaram and I told Jayant Desai,”OK, form today I will be C. Rammchandra”. A woman’s name changes after her marriage, here I was changing my name after joining a new company ! ”

He needed stability and regular income after having got married. He was now happy and enjoyed his married life. One after another, he did 5 successful films for Jayant Desai and he thought that it was the right time to ask for a raise in salary. When he went and asked for a salary of Rs. 1000, he was refused. Jayant Desai said that he could give only Rs. 600 salary. In a fit of anger, C Ramchandra left the job.

In early 1946, Kavi Pradeep took him to Filmistan, where S.Mukherjee appointed him on a salary of Rs. 1000 pm. His first film at Filmistan was “Safar “-46. S. Mukherjee was in total control of Filmistan. Nothing happened without his permission or knowledge. According to C Ramchandra, he was a good combination of of an astute businessman and a strict disciplanarian. While in Filmistan, C Ramchandra came into his own and gave superb music in films offered to him.

Many of the songs of his films are sung by himself. It is not that he was wary of giving songs to other singers, but he genuinely felt that only he could give justice to some of the funny songs, comedy songs and songs with Anokhe Bol. Ultimately, it looked as if he was indeed correct in his thinking, looking at some of his famous songs.

After joining Filmistan, the real talents of C Ramchandra came to the fore. Almost every film that he composed music of, was successful. Initially, S. Mukherjee was skeptical about his songs, but as the public gave their ecstatic response to his music in films after films, he relented giving almost a free hand to him.

Safar-46 was followed a string of famous films followed. Some of them were, Saajan, Shehnai, Khidki, Nadiya ke paar, Namoona, Patanga, Nirala, Samadhi, Albela,Sagai, Sargam,Anarkali,Nastik,Azaad, Aasha, Barish and many others.

While Naushad revived classical usic in a simpler form in Hindi films, C Raqmchandra made music a 100% entertainment with melody and tune.

On the eve of C.Ramchandra’s Death Anniversary on 5th January, here is a Gem from his first successful film, Safar-46. It is sung by Chitalkar himself and Binapani Mukherjee. The lyrics are by G.S.Nepali.

Song-O o baabujee nazar bachaana baabujee (Safar)(1946) Singers-Binapani Mukherji, Chitalkar, Lyrics-Gopal Singh Nepali, MD-C Ramchandra

Lyrics

o o baabujee
baabujee ee

nazar bachaana baabuji
nazar bachaana
auron ki gali bhool ke bhi na jaana
nazar bachaana baabuji
nazar bachaana
auron ki gali bhool ke bhi na jaana

ho o o o o
raste se aaoge
raste se jaaoge ae ae
aankhen ladaaoge to pocket kataaoge
aankhen ladaaoge to pocket kataaoge
matlab ki duniya mein rone bhi na paaoge
rone bhi na paaoge
nahin lagega baabujee kahin thhikaana
auron ki gali bhool ke bhi na jaana
nazar bachaana baabuji
nazar bachaana
auron ki gali bhool ke bhi na jaana

duniya hai phaani
paisa hai paani
duniya hai phaani
paisa hai paani
zindagi laakh ki
nau laakh ki jawaani
zindagi laakh ki
nau laakh ki jawaani
beech bazariya mein padegi ganwaani
padegi ganwaani
dil na lagaana baabujee
dil na lagaana
auron ki gali bhool ke bhi na jaana
nazar bachaana baabuji
nazar bachaana
auron ki gali bhool ke bhi na jaana

ho o
chhoti umariya aa
chhoti umariya mein chali bazariya
chali bazariya aa
chupke se chhod aayi apni sajariya
chupke se chhod aayi apni sajariya
achchi lage na tumko oonchi atariya
oonchi atariya
hamse chhup na baai ji
hamse chhup na
auron ki gali bhool ke bhi na jaana
hamse chhup na baai ji
hamse chhup na
auron ki gali bhool ke bhi na jaana
