I grew up in a small town where everybody knew everybody and also knew each other’s ‘kartoots’. I was young enough not to understand some conversations of grownups. On one occasion when I was at a fruit sellers shop, with my father, a prominent person came to buy mangoes. It was beginning of the mango season and they were very dear. The shop keeper asked him “Sir, is it for house no. 1 or for house no. 2?” I looked at my father and he warded off my questioning look and started examining mangoes on the rack.
The prominent citizen coolly said “Shut up and just pack 12 of those.” They were the more expensive ones. Shopkeeper said ‘OK Sir, understood’.
I have narrated this with the benefit of hindsight, and not how I perceived the proceedings then. The shopkeeper’s question was in mischievous humour arising out of familiarity. He wanted to pack appropriate quality based on the answer. The citizen’s response was in mock anger. He did not mind that question.
Whatever may be the law (the law differed before and after independence), having and supporting a second woman, legally wedded or not, was not something rare in places where I grew up. Rich flaunted such practice as a show of their wealth and power. The second woman was mostly from economically weaker strata of society. There are also instances where elders have forced their family member to take a second woman because his wife did not or could not conceive and they wanted an heir for the sake of retaing the family wealth within the family.
Krishnakant Dharmadhikari was a victim of circumstances and under pressure from his mother to beget an heir, ‘married’ a second woman who bore him a son and a daughter. There upon his wife too bears a son. This is how the movie ‘Vansh’ unfolds.
Krishnakant, a Justice, is played by Anupam Kher. Therafter though his wives live in separate houses, they (including children) come across each other and there is clash and fireworks. Krishnakant is appointed to head a panel/committee to enquire into alleged misdeeds of politician Chowdhary, played by Amrish Puri. Chowdhary sets his goons after KrishnaKant, and in the ensuing scenario warring wives and children of KrishnaKant come together to protect him. No doubt, it all finally ends well.
Today’s pleasing song with a classy rhythm is from ‘Vansh’(1992), set to music by Anand –Milind, with lyrics by Sameer. This is sung by Lata Mangeshkar. This is a romancing sequence between one of the sons and his lover. Actors are Sudhesh Berry & Ekta (as credited in Youtube video…but I think it is not Ekta)
With this song ‘Vansh’ opens account in ASAD.
The movie ‘Vansh’ is an independent remake of Tamil Movie ‘Agni Nakshtram’ by Mani Ratnam. Anand- Milind’s music here are greatly influenced by Ilayaraja who scored the music of ‘Agni Nakshatram’.

Actress featured in this song is PRIYANKA, who is also a famous child artiste as Baby Pinky(in Hindi Movies), (she acted as heroine in many kannada movies like Oorvashi Kalyana,Kalla Malla)
She is different from Priyanka Upendra(as per imdb), Priyanka Upendra is another north india artiste setteled in Karnataka
