Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 34
———————————————————

‘Mitti Ke Khiloune’ (1948) was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone and it was directed by Prahlad Dutt. The star cast included Karan Dewan, Nigar Sultana, Nirupa Roy, Dulari, Ram Avatar, SN Tripathi, Pandit Iqbal etc. The film was reviewed in March 1949 issue of ‘Filmindia’ magazine. The story of the film appears familiar, probably repeated in a few later Hindi films:

Meena (Nigar Sultana) is the daughter of a wealthy father who selects Ramesh (Karan Diwan), a law student as the Secretary to her father. Soon Meena and Ramesh turn their relations into love affairs. In the meanwhile, Meena’s father dies. Now Meena and Ramesh are free to marry. But there is a twist in the story.

Ramesh receives a telegram informing him of his father’s serious illness and he is required to visit his home town to be with his father. Ramesh leaves for his home town promising Meena that he would return. From the sick bed, the father forces Ramesh to marry Kusum (Nirupa Roy) from his town. His plea is that he had already in love with Meena are brushed aside and the marriage takes place.

Ramesh returns to the city with his wife Kusum. He straight way heads to Meena’s house, introducing his wife to her. This is shocking news to Meena who over a period of time becomes sick. She decides to move away from the city. Hearing the news that Meena has left the city, Ramesh becomes sick and is bedridden. Sheila, Ramesh’s sister becomes a conduit between Ramesh and Meena and arranges a telephonic conversation with Meena which brings Ramesh to recovery from his sickness. He rushes to Meena’s house miles away and dies after meeting Meena.

The film had 11 songs penned by Butaram Sharma (6) and Pandit Indra (4). One song is unattributed. The songs were composed by Bulo C Rani and Hansraj Behl. One song from this movie has been covered in the blog in the past.

Here is the second song from the movie to appear in the blog. This song-‘Dil Se Tera Khayaal Na Jaaye To Kya Karoon’ is sung in ghazal format by Shamshad Begum on the lyrics of Butaram Sharma which is set to music by Bulo C Rani. The ghazal appeared familiar to me. A search on rekhta.org revealed that Butaram Sharma was inspired from Hafeez Jalandhari’s ghazal, Dil Se Tera Khayaal Na Jaaye To Kya Karoon.

Among Shamshad Begum’s ghazal renditions, this is one that I like the most.
