Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 35
————————————–
I had never heard of the film AANDHI (1940) until I came across a couple of mp3 audio clips of the songs from the film. It was more surprising for me when I came to know that the film was from the stable of New Theatres Ltd. Of course, the film was produced under the banner of Associated Productions Ltd, probably an associate or subsidiary of the New Theatres. The film was directed by Dinesh Ranjan Das, a name I heard for the first time. The star cast included Pankaj Mullick and Mollina Devi in lead roles supported by Nemo, Shreelekha, Manjari, Muzamil, K C Dey etc.
I have no idea about the story of the film. I have not been able to get the review of the film on the websites. But in July 1940 issue of ‘Filmindia’ magazine, its editor Baburao Patel wrote (reproduced verbatim):
This is a picture produced by New Theatres Ltd for Associate Productions Ltd. Why? That is their secret.
It features K C Dey, Pankaj Mullick and Mollina – three popular artists. Between them if nothing else, at least good music was expected. It is not there. Pankaj Mullick as a hero shatters our idea of hero worship. Mollina, once a graceful star, now steam-rolls all expression.
Dinesh Ranjan Das is the director. He is unknown today. It will be a mercy if he remains so in future.
Even the photography and the sound are far below the NT standard. New Theatres have wasted time and money in producing such a picture. It will be waste of time and money to see it. It will be a greater waste to review it in details.
If ‘Aandhi’ is a motion picture, I am Mahatma Gandhi.
There were 12 songs in the film written by Aarzu Lucknawi (8), Rashid Gorakhpuri (2) and unattributed (2). All the songs were composed by K C Dey. One song has been covered in the Blog. I am presenting the second song to appear on the Blog. The song is ‘brij ke raajan Manmohan tori dekh phaban lalchaaye’ sung by Pankaj Mullick and Radha Rani. The song is written by Rashid Gorakhpuri. The rendition as well as interlude orchestration is pleasing to the ears.
If Baburao Patel did not hear the good music in this film as well as some other Hindi films also if I go by his reviews, he must be ‘Aurangzeb’ of Hindi film music.

jeewan kaa ek raag sunaaye
brij ke raajan
mast nigaahen jab tum tero (?)
dnargis ka chehra kumhlaaye
mast nigaahen jab tum tero(?)
nargis ka chehra kumhlaaye
sundar roop dikhaao
sundar roop dikhaao jab tum
chaand ghata mein chhup jaaye
chaand ghata mein chhup jaaye
madhur madhur murli jab baaje
madhur madhur murli jab baaje

Sadanand ji,
Where to fetch these old magazines of 40’s and 50’s (Filmindia, Filmfare etc) on the net?
Or do you have the hard copies at home.

Mahesh ji,
Type ‘filmindia’ followed by year on google search. you will get the issues bunched for a year. For example, if you are looking for issues of 1940, type ‘filmindia1940’ on google search.
The archives have the issues starting from 1937-38 and up to 1949. However, issues relating to years 1944 and 1947 are not available.
