Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 40
——————————————-
MOHABBAT KI JEET (1943) was produced under the banner of Girdhar Bahaar Productions and it was directed by Ramanlal Desai. The star cast included Nadia, Navinchandra, Leela Pawar, S Nazir, Shaqir, Agha, Munshi Kanzar, Vasantrao Pehlwan etc. From the star cast it can be safely assumed that the film belonged to the genre of stunt/action. I have no idea about the story of the film. But Nadia being the heroine in the film, one can expect that the story of the film would revolve around her role of striking out the forces of evil and restore goodness to the society. She would generally attain this by doing spectacular stunts and acrobatics which would please the front benchers in the theatres.
The film had 7 songs penned by Ehsan Rizvi which were set to music by Vasant Kumar. (is it Vasant Kumar Naidu?). As far as I know, none of the songs are on YT. I am presenting the first song to appear on the Blog. The song is ‘fasl-e-bahaaar aa gayi hansne lagi kali kali’ sung by Khan Mastana.
Whenever I listen to songs rendered by Khan Mastana, I always feel what his talent was not fully utilised. He belonged to the illustrious family of Ustad Sahahbad Khan of Etawah Gharana, an off-shoot of Gwalior Gharana. Etawah Gharana was the exponent of Surbahar and Sitar. Ustad Vilayat Khan also belonged to the same Gharana. Let us read what Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan, one of the greatest sitar players of the current generation, the son of Aziz Khan and nephew of Hafiz Khan Mastana, has to say about his uncle:
A select few are born with an extraordinary gift of talent yet, more often, these people end up being oblivious of their own talent, and people are left wondering what would have happened had this person lived up to his full potential. Ustad Hafeez Khan (Mastana) was one of them. He was the eldest son of the legendary musician Ustad Waheed Khan Saab. He not only received extensive training on the sitar and surbahar but also in vocal music.
After realising that the future of classical musical performance was bleak, Ustad Hafeez Khan decided to enter the Bombay Film Industry as a playback singer to earn his daily bread. He went on to become a celebrated playback singer known in the film industry as H.Khan Mastana. Incidentally, one of the most famous playback singers of all time, Mohammed Rafi started his playback career as a chorus singer in one of his songs. He also composed music for several films. Ustad Shahid Parvez being his nephew received extensive taleem in vocal music and surbahar from Ustad Hafeez Khan Saab.
Be it as a vocalist or instrumentalist, Ustad Hafeez Khan could have easily gone on to become one of the foremost musicians of his generation. Yet he never gave it a real try. A rare recording of Ustad Hafeez Khan, present in the family archives, reveals the virtuosity of this talented musician both as a vocalist and instrumentalist. People are left wondering what would have happened had this person pursued a career as a performing Indian Classical Musician. [Quoted at Imadadkhani Gharana. I had given a short profile of Khan Mastana in dekh kar aankhen churaana kis se seekha aapne]
I heard the song under discussion for the first time just recently and I liked it immensely. I regard this song as one of the best songs rendered by Khan Mastana. He has rendered the song in a ‘mastaana’ mood – a song for joie de vivre.
While making the video of the song, I have used a few pictures which I had shot during my travels/treks to reflect the mood of ‘fasl-e-bahaar’.
