Hullo to all in atuldom
Recently I saw an ad in the newspapers which made me realise that there is something called the “World Music Day” and that it is held in about 120 countries. It is Fête de la Musique’ or Make Music Day or World Music Day.
Now whenever I come across such World or International things I have started reading about it from the (my) trusted source—Wikipedia. And I will say that most times it gives correct knowledge.
What I understood is that it is basically an all day event in the days of the solstice. It started sometime in October 1981, with the idea of “music everywhere and the concert nowhere”. In a 1982 study on the cultural habits of the French, it was found that five million people, one child out of two, played a musical instrument, so this was a way to bring all hidden talent out on the streets. It first took place in 1982 in Paris as the Fête de la Musique. Ever since the festival has become an international phenomenon, celebrated on the same day in more than 700 cities in 120 countries, including Germany, Italy, Greece, Russia, Australia, Peru, Brazil, Ecuador, Mexico, Canada, the United States, and Japan. Many free concerts are organized, making all genres of music accessible to the public. Two of the caveats to being sanctioned by the official Fête de la Musique organization in Paris are that all concerts must be free to the public, and all performers donate their time for free. This is true of most participating cities, now, as well.
I also read up a little bit about how it is being held in India. “The Hindu” paper’s site says that Alliance Française de Delhi and Hauz Khas Village Traders’ Association have roped in over 20 venues in Hauz Khas Village to celebrate World Music Day on July 21. (Have to double check the date though). A wide range of genre, musicians and type of shows will be presented during the evening, from 8 p.m. onwards, to promote the diversity of music.
Now the ad that triggered all this research (oh what a heavy term) said that the Hard Rock Café chain in the country was going to host various artists at all their branches through the country only that it would be a ticketed event. That means one more case of commercialisation of a noble intention like say a Valentine’s Day or friendship day or mother’s day. But ok I will not cry about that. I will instead try to link an international song to (what else) Bollywood song.
Last month we had Guruji (I think) sharing a video of the “Come September” (1961) theme song and we had a discussion of how it has inspired a few Hindi songs. Now what better way to link World Music day with Bollywood than this.
So here is a song from the 1995 Ashutosh Gowarikar directed “Baazi” which had Aamir Khan play a cop. In today’s song he is dressed in Drag and is out to keep an eye on Mushtaq Khan and Avtar Gill who will eventually lead him to the kingpin and the mastermind (Paresh Rawal) behind the attempt on the life of the CM. So that is the background for this song. It is sung by Kavitha Krishnamurthy to music by Anu Malik. It is written by Majrooh Sultanpuri.

Like we discussed during the Come September discussion, there was also a Suman Kalyanpur song based on this tune – rimjhim rimjhim na barse moti ke daane.
In fact, that is how I heard this tune in the first place as a young boy. At that time, I did hear that it was a copy of the Come September tune.
Years later, I got to see the film, starring Rock Hudson and Gina Lollobrigida.
I think we accept that not all songs that appear on this blog will be brilliant or to everybody’s taste. That’s how it goes with anything. Creative people put in their effort – sometimes it works and it’s appreciated, sometimes it’s not. Our goal is to record it here, for posterity and let each person judge for himself/herself.

As we have to complete all the songs of a movie this is necessary whether we like it or not.

This is music!!!, disgrace to Great Indian Music.
Wasted your time as well as our time in projecting such disappointing music. I could not resist expressing my feelings and apologies.

Hullo sir/madam
I completely agree with you that this is disappointing music.
But we shd remember that in any movie which has say 5/6 songs not all will b popular, great lyrically, aesthetic etc. But possibly it was needed at that point of the story. Also we shd give credit to the writer who has written something like this in his illustrious career of almost 60 years. Plus as Sudhirji has written in one of his posts recently we shd think how much effort the composer, writer, actor and dance director and the director himself would have put in to make this. Nobody at the point of making wants a bad product. It is a case of either we like it or not, finally we audience are the judge. Okay we didn’t like it. Let me confess that I heard this song after 1995 only recently when we were discussing the come September tune.
Personally even I prefer come september then the madhuri dixit song.
So no need apologises.
Also atulji correction required this is a 1995 movie.
