Rajesh Khanna – The Phenomenon – 2
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

There has been a long gap after the first post appeared in this series. My original thought was that I would be able to share posts in this series at the rate of one post per month. However I could not do sent any other post after the first one, which was sent on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the ‘First Superstar of Indian Cinema’.

If the first post was on the occasion of the birth anniversary then this second post is coming up on the occasion of his death anniversary (29.12.1942 – 18.07.2012).

Any way, we move further in this journey of Rajesh Khanna films and the songs of these films.

Today’s song is not really a song but a ‘poem recitation’ cum conversation between Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore from the ‘1973 film – Aavishkar’.

I had passed my matriculation in 1983 and after that I was staying at Akola at my grandparents’ place for further studies. It was there that I got to watch this film on TV sometime during 1983-85.
I was particularly interested in watching films of ‘Rajesh Khanna’ – not just once but more than once, twice …

I had mentioned in my earlier post in this series that I found myself mesmerised after watching his films. His performances touched my heart and would leave a very deep impact on my mind. I would remain in a dazed state for quite some time after watching his films and it would be a while before I would come back to normalcy – physically as well as mentally.

I first caught Rajesh Khanna hyseria after watching ‘Anand’. And this kept growing further in the years to come.

I got to watch the film for the first time during ‘Ganpati festival celebrations’ on a 16mm screen in an open ground marked for the ‘Ganpati idol’. Later on, I watched it in a theatre – Variety Talkies- at Nagpur, and later on I kept on watching this movie whenever I got a chance.

Watching Rajesh Khanna films more than once was a regular practice for me at that time. I remember that I had watched ‘Avtaar’ as many as three times during its first run. During that period I also watched ‘Dil E Naadaan’, ‘Agar Tum Na Hote, ‘Souten’, ‘Dharm Aur Qanoon’, ‘Aawaaz’, ‘Raaz’, ‘Sachcha Jhoothha’ , ‘Aan Milo Sajna’, ‘Dushman’, ‘Asha Jyoti’ etc.

Some of his old hit films were also getting re-released for their second run at that time viz. ‘Mehboob Ki Mehndi’.

I also always kept a watch on ‘Video Parlours’ and what they were going to show in coming days, as I was eager to watch his old films screened there. At one such instance, I watched ‘Haathi Mere Saathi’ in a ‘video parlour’.

TV had invaded our lives by then, but it was still not there at our home. So I used to watch TV at a neighbor’s house or my friend’s home as and when possible.
I remember tthat I watched ‘Dil Daulat Duniya’ and ‘Aavishkaar’ on TV during those years. I must have been fifteen or sixteen years old then.

This film ‘Aavishkaar-1973’, though based on a marital relationship, and dreams and realities of life touched me a lot.

I don’t exactly remember how my mind could understand the nuances of relationships and a troubled relationship between a husband and his wife at that time. what I do remember from this movie is a song viz. ‘hasne ki chaah ne’. And another one was the poem ‘mahaa shoonya ke mahaan vistaar mein’…

I have not been able to forget it since.

And so, when I started collecting music cassettes I was always on the lookout for the songs of Rajesh Khanna films, popular and less popular, and those that were not readily available.

I found this ‘poem’ in one such cassette titled ‘Rajesh Khanna Starrer Hits’ by HMV, which I purchased on 13.06.1987 (from a music center at Nehru Place, New Delhi).

Today I present this poem in remembrance of Rajesh Khanna on his fourth death anniversary (18 july 2016).

“Aavishkaar-1973” was an ‘Aarohi Film Makers, Bombay’ presentation. It was produced, directed and written by Basu Bhattacharya. Basu Bhattacharya also wrote the Screenplay of this film. Dialogues were written by Gyandev Agnihotri. It had Rajesh Khanna, Sharmila Tagore, Dina Gandhi, Denis Clement, Satyendra Kappu, Monika Jasnani (Child artist), Devendra Khandelwal, Margret and new discovery Mahesh Sharma and Minna Johar.

The film had six songs (including one poem recitation) in it. Till now, I was aware of the five songs of this movie. However for this post when I checked with the appendix / addenda in HFGK, I found it mentioned on page no. 669 HFGK-Vol-V that the film had one more song ‘mujhe hai jhooth se nafrat main sachchi baat kehta hoon’.
(I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this.)

Kapil Kumar and Gyandev Agnihotri penned two songs each, while lyrics of one song are traditional. Asha Bhonsle, Manna Dey, Jagjit Singh and Chitra Singh gave their voices to the songs. While the poem recitation was done by Rajesh Khanna (as mentioned in HFGK, though there is a little conversation in the poem wherein Sharmila Tagore also has dialogues)

Music of this film was composed by Kanu Roy.

This film was passed by censor board on 26.09.1973.

This film fetched Rajesh Khanna his third filmfare award as the ‘best actor’ after ‘Anand’ and ‘Sachchaa Jhoothha’.

The video available on YT for the today’s poem had an edited version covering only the part of Rajesh Khanna dialogues. However I requested my good friend Ashish Tilak to upload the full video including the conversation between Rajesh Khanna and Sharmila Tagore, which he has uploaded for today’s special day.

Song-Mahaa shoonya ke mahaan vistaar mein hai ek sunahra sansaar (Aavishkaar)(1973) Voices-Rajesh Khanna, Sharmila Tagore, Dialogue-Gyandev Agnihotri, MD-Kanu Roy

——————-
Poem
——————-

Mahaa shoonya ke mahaan vistaar mein hai
ek sunehra sansaar
Ghar hai, wahi suraj aur dharti ka
janmi hai wahi zindagi
Paidaa huaa hai pyaar
pyaar ka.. Prakaash ka.. Suraj hai mahaa pushp
suhaag ka, suhaag raat ka suraj hai pehla pati
aata hai roz naye rang se
jaataa hai roz naye dhang se
sajtaa hai.. Sajaata hai.. Praan priya dharti ko
mausam ki mehndi se
bijuri ki bindi se
indradhanushiya maahvaar se
baadar ke kaajal se
yog ka.. Bhog ka .. Shaashwat sambhog ka
suraj hai mahaa yogi
reeti aur rivaaj hai usi ki parampara
kaaryakram usi se
maayakram usi se
drushya bhram usi se
swann, vaham usi se
Satya … satya swapna ……

Is kavita main kuchh line’en aur thi lekin mujhe wo yaad nahin aa rahi…

Kaunsi line’en

Un line’on ka matlab tha.. ki dharti suraj ke chaaron aur ghoomti hai ..
Jab se ye sansaar banaa, tab se wo baraabar ghoom rahi hai..
Ghoomti hi jaa rahi hai

Tarika to achchha hai…

Kaunsa?

Yahi mere daddy.. Meri mummy se demand karte rahe..
Ki tum.. Tum sirf meri patni ho,
Isliye hameshaa mere chaaron ore ghoomo
Yahi mere daddy ke daddy mere daadi ko command karte rahe
ki tum sirf mere bachchon ki maa ho,
Isliye mere chaaron ore chakkar lagaao
Jaanti hoon Amar, tumne bhi hameshaa yahi chaaha hai

Nahin Mansi … hamne use bahot zyaada chaaha..
Kyon chaaha hai..
Yaad karo … Shaadi ke pehle ham jab milte the
Chhup chhup kar milte the …
Kitni der ke liye milte the?
Average nikaalo to ek ghante ke liye …
Us ek ghante mein ham dono … sabse ache kapde.. Sabse achchhi baat chit.. Sabse achchhe taur tareeke lekar.. Kam se kam time mein ek doosre ko zyaada se zyaada impress karne ki koshish karte the.
Us ek ghante waali tum aur us ek ghante waala main kitne achchhe the?

Aur aaj ye ek ghante waale ham, Itne kharaab hai

Kharaab nahin hai Mansi… Kuchh kar nahin paate hain

Shaadi se pehle koi aisi baatein nahin thi Amar jo tum kar nahin paate the

Tab main premi tha…
Aaj pati hoon
Tab zindagi ek sapna thi
Ham ham the
Aaj zindagi ek laachari hai.. Ek reeti hai rivaaj hai … hamaare ham ke do tukde ho gaye
Tumhaara main aur mera main

Haan Amar, hamaare main hameshaa main main karte rahe.
Phir baat utar aayi tu- tu main main par …
Bas yahi karte rahe

Kitni ajeeb baat hai
Hamen apni takleef, apni crisis pataa hai
Phir bhi kuchh nahin ho paata…

Amar, kahin na kahin se to seekhna hi padtaa hai

Phir bhi dharti hai

(Chalo, doodh waala aata hoga..)

Poem in Devnagri script
—————————————-

It was an Avishkar for you!

Thanks, Avinashji. Enjoy reading your posts – they are nostalgic and take me back to an era that I can totally relate to. 🙂 Also, I like the casual style.

Now I need to watch Aavishkar again – I last watched it ages ago (in the 1970s).
