Today (18 july 2016) is the death anniversary of Rajesh Khanna (30 december 1942- 18 july 2012). We already have two tributes to Rajesh Khanna is the blog from two die hard Rajesh Khanna fans.

I was in the 6-10 years age group when Rajesh Khanna burst Into the Hindi movie scene. The way he became the heartthrob of much of India in late 1960s was something unprecedented. There have been cases in the past when some actors became extremely popular with the masses but most such people had to really struggle for their success. In case of Rajesh Khanna, success came to him far too easily. Success was handed to him on a platter.

There was hysterical fan following for him from 1968 to 1974-75. After that, his honeymoon period was over. The same fans, who could not have enough of him turned their backs on him. His superstar years were over !

I was one of those millions whose feelings about Rajesh Khanna during this phase matched the feelings of the masses. In other words, I was very much a part of the masses !

If you ask me, I formed my own view about Rajesh Khanna and it had nothing to do with what the media wrote about him or what other people thought about him. I was not into the habit of reading news papers or listening to news on radio those days so how was I going to form my views on anyone. In any case there used to be very few newspapers and only one desi radio network those days.

majority of fans copy their idols superficially. For instance, they would try to copy the mannerism, wear the same hairstyle, dress that way, walk like him etc. That was how it was when Rajesh Khanna was the superstar, and that was no different when Amitabh Bachchan became the superstar.

Today, none of the then fans of Rajesh Khanna (and Amitabh Bachchan) ape the mannerisms of their erstwhile idols. But I think there is much that we can learn from the careers of their idols.

For instance, one lesson that everyone needs to learn is that you should be grateful to the people who hepled you. You need to respect people when you are on your way up because you will meet the same people again when you are on your (inevitable) way down. Inter personal relationship is something that no one teaches you but it can make a big difference to your fortunes, especially when you are on your way down.

One needs to show humility when one achieves success.

I find it interesting to note that Amitabh Bachchan, the next superstar was quite an antithesis of Rajesh Khanna when it came to professionalism. And I am not suprised that Amitabh Bachchan is reaping the rewards for his prefessionalism even today.

I find it interesting that the titles of Rajesh Khanna movies just after his crown had slipped were something like “Chalta Purza”, “Mahachor”, “Bundlebaaz” etc. before he decided to turn over a new leaf with Amardep, Kudrat, Dhanwan etc. It was too late for his career by that time though.

On this occasion, here is a song from “Mahachor”(1976). This movie was produced and directed by Narinder Bedi for Dachi Films Private Limited. The movie had Rajesh Khanna, Neetu Singh,Prem Chopra, Aruna Irani, Kamini Kaushal, Manorama, Anwar Hussain, Krishan Dhawan, Manmohan, Rajan Haksar, Pinchoo Kapoor, Birbal, Narbada Shankar, Protima Devi, Rajpal, Viju Khote, Master Lollypop, Jagdish Raj, Soni, Satyender, Moolchand, Ratanmala, Harnam Singh, Ved Prakash, Rajkumar, Rajnath, Dhanna, Sonia Sahni etc in it.

This song is sung by Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhonsle. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by R D Burman.

The song is picturised on Rajesh Khanna and Neetu Singh.

Lyrics

meethi meethi ankhiyon se man bhar de ae
meethi meethi ankhiyon se man bhar de ae
kisi din mera dil khush kar de ae
raam tera bhala kare
aahe
meethi meethi ankhiyon se man bhar de ae
kisi din mera dil khush kar de ae
raam tera bhala kare

raam tera
raam tera bhala kare
meethi meethi ankhiyon se man bhar de ae
kisi din mera dil khush kar de
raam tera
ke raam tera bhala kare

teri tasweer aise man mein basi
jaise mandir mein koi moorti
ho
teri tasweer aise man mein basi
jaise mandir mein koi moorti
o devi kabhi bhakton ko darshan de ae
kisi din mera dil khush kar de
raam tera
raam tera bhala kare

haaye haaye kar raam raam mat kar
bhakton ka naam badnaam mat kar
haaye haaye kar raam raam mat kar
bhakton ka naam badnaam mat kar
roop na badal ja re bahroopiye ae
kisi din mera dil khush kar de
raam tera
raam tera bhala kare
pyaari pyaari batiyon se man bhar de ae
kisi din mera dil khush kar de

raam tera
raam tera bhala kare

OK the inevitable combination of those times….AB-RDB-KK-RK. Sure shot hit formula which unfortunately the movie didn’t become. But songs were good

You are 100% right, Atul. Each quality that was found lacking in Rajesh and led to his downfall, could be found in Amitabh. No arrogance, respect for colleagues, punctuality, professionalism – no wonder everyone loved working with Amitabh. There’s a big lesson of life in this.

It was precisely the Chalta Purza, Mahachor, Bundalbaaz period that I switched off from Rajesh. Haven’t seen the first two films to date, though I’ve seen Bundalbaaz (after Greta reviewed it) – and found it to be a fair amount of crazy fun. 🙂
