“Dil Ki Basti”(1947) was directed by Wahid Qureshi for Aaina Pictures. The movie had Masood, Nigar Sultana, Amar, Urmila, Lalita Pawar, Tiwari etc in it.
Three songs from the movie has been discussed in the past.
Here is the fourth song from “Dil Ki Basti”(1949) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Geeta Dutt. Shakeel Badayuni is the lyricist. Music is composed by Ghulam Mohammad.
Only the audio of this melancholic song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of this song.
I am unable to get the lyrics of the song right at a few places to my satisfaction. I request our readers with keener ears to help fill in the blanks/ suggest corrections in the lyrics as applicable.
Song-Jal jal ke kahen ham jee se (Dil Ki Basti)(1949) Singer-Geeta Dutt, Lyrics-Shakeel Badayuni, MD-Ghulam Mohammad
Lyrics
jal jal ke
jal jal ke kahen hum ji se
kyun pyaar kiya thha kisi se ae
jal jal ke
jal jal ke kahen hum ji se
kyun pyaar kiya thha kisi se ae
jal jal ke
dil de ke unhen hum haar gaye
sab apne jatan de(?) paar gaye
ummeed ka daaman chaak hua aa aa
ik aag lagi dil khaak hua aa aa
majboor hai dil ki lagi se
jalta hai kaun khushi se ae
jal jal ke
jal jal ke kahen hum ji se
kyun pyar kiya thha kisi se ae
jal jal ke
taqdeer mein jo thha ho ke raha
kya socha thha kya ho ke raha
is ranj se aahen kyun na bharen aen aen
is gham ki shiqaayat kyun na karen aen aen
dil jis ko diya marzi se
sukh paaya aaj usi se ae
jal jal ke
jal jal ke kahen hum ji se
kyun pyaar kiya thha kisi se ae
jal jal ke

So sad that we lost such a good singer whose personal tragedy was too overwhelming for her to pursue a professional career. Her last songs in the 1972 movie – Anubhav are immortal.

Dear Atul ji,
Thanks a lot for this rare sweet song in the dulcet voice of Geeta Dutt.
What a lovely composition from Ghulam Mohammad.
Best regards,
Avadh Lal
