“Sanyasi” was a 1975 movie which had Manoj Kumar and Hema Malini in the lead. It had Sulochana Latkar playing mother to Manoj Kumar and Pran played Shanti Baba a true Sanyasi to Premnath’s Ishwar Baba who is a baba by day and Daku Mangal Singh at other times. The plot was pretty simple with the rich mother wanting to keep her son away from vices that his father had. She teaches him positive values Geeta etc and the son also dutifully refrains from all vices and in addition also becomes a sanyasi. Hema Malini played Champa alias Arti whose job is to break the sanyasi’s vow of celibacy and try and marry him. Added in the story is the case of Girdhari and Bhanwari played by Raj Mehra and Prem Chopra who are out to con the rich widow and walk away with her property. This synopsis I had read a long time ago in the various internet sites. I have never seen the movie but I had liked most of its songs specially “Sun bal brahmachari main hoon Kanyakumari” and “Karm kiye jaa phal ki chinta mat kar-e-insaan”.

On the occasion of Harikishan Goswami’s (aka Manoj Kumar) 79th birthday today (24 july 2016), here is a song from this 1975 movie which was directed by Sohanlal Kanwar. It had music by Shankar of Shankar- Jaikishan duo. It should be noted that the music was always credited as Shankar- Jaikishan till Shankar passed away in 1987. (Jaikishan had passed away in 1971).

This was the first time Hema Malini paired up with Manoj Kumar. Post this they acted in three other films- Dus Numbri and Santosh (in the late 80s) and in Kranti (1981). The 1977 “Shirdi Ke Sai Baba” which was produced by Manoj Kumar had the pair in a special appearance but there Hema played Rajendra Kumar’s wife (a Doctor). This movie had Vithalbhai Patel, Verma Malik, Hasrat Jaipuri, M.G.Hasmat, and Vishweshawar Sharma as lyricists.

Today’s entertaining song has some bit of preaching in it. It starts with “Geeta ke Bol” “Karmne Vadhikaraste Ma Phaleshu Kadachana”. The song has Manoj Kumar and Hema Malini dressed as Sanyaasis –I am not sure if they are in disguise. Various characters enter the scene as the song progresses- Aruna Irani as a Sanyaasin, Prem Chopra and Raj Mehra as Bhakts, and lastly Premnath as a Dhongi Baba. The duet is by Mukesh and Lata Mangeshkar, written by Vishweshwar SharmaM G Hashmat.

Some trivia that I read somewhere (only the gyaanis in the blog can confirm this: I have read somewhere that post “Sangam” (1964) Lata Mangeshkar had stopped singing for the duo. She re associated with Shankar for this movie.

So let us wish Manoj Kumar who was awarded the Dadasaheb Phalke award this year a long and healthy life.
Happy Birthday to you Mr. Bharat a.k.a Manoj Kumar

Lyrics

Aaaaa
aaaaa
aaaaa haa
karmanye vaadhikaaraste
ma phaleshu kadachan

karam kiye ja phal ki ichcha mat kar ae insaan
jaise karm karega waise phal dega bhagwaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan

karm kiye ja phal ki ichcha mat kar ae insaan
jaise karam karega waise phal dega bhagwaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan

is praani ka kasht door karo mahaaraaj
yeh kaun hai devi
kya kasht hai isse

roop chand hai resham waala
kapde ka vyaapaari
bees baras tak saath mein reh kar
bhaag gayi iski naari
aur agar wo saath mein rehti
mar jaati bechaari

(accha)
pati dev ke man bhaayi thi bala ek kuwaanri
(Arrarara)
pati bana patni ka dushman
sankat mein thi jaan
jaise karam karega waise phal dega bhagwaan

ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan

gurudev
is kanya ka mukhda toh bhola bhaala hai
kintu
kintu
kintu kya?

mrignayni si chanchal baala
man mein liye udaasi
dukh ke andar dabi huyi hai
sukh ki hai abhilaashi
kisi ke ghar ki raajkumaari
bani kisi ki daasi
majboori ke aankh mein aansoo
palken phir bhi pyaasi
(hmm hmm)
pal pal dhoye armaanon ke ganga jal se praan
jaise karam karega waise phal dega bhagwaan

ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan

aap toh gyaani hain
anataryaami hain
bataaye na maharaj
kya devi?

kaun si duwidha aapke charno mein inko le aayi
kis chinta mein magan hain dono
kyun aanhken pathrayi
ye mare huye hai ya jeewit
bas marne hi wale hai devi (han)
inka anth nikat hain
tathaastu
in donon dushton ne milkar aisi chaal chalaai
ek kans mama ban baitha
ek duryodhan bhai
krishna kans ka todega phir kalyug mein abhimaan
jaise karam karega waise phal dega bhagwaan

ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan

hain
gurudev!
yeh main kya dekh rahi hoon
jinke darshanon ko duniya tarasti hain
swayam darshan dene aayein hain

pohuncha hua hai saadhu
kya kya chamatkar dikhlaaye
bholi janta bole ishwar
roop badal ke aaye
yeh janta ki bhool hai devi
hmm
yeh mahaapaapi hain ghor apradhi hain
achaa
ved shaastron ki bhaasha ko yeh dhongi kya jaane
ye pooja karwaye apni
prabhu ko kya pehchaane
ye sadhu ke bhesh mein daaku roz pakhand rachaye
rishiyon ko badnaam kare
santon pe daagh lagaye
din me daake daale paapi
raat mein katal karaaye
(raam raam raam)
sach bole sanyaasi iska kabhi na ho kalyaan
jaise karam karega waise phal dega bhagwaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
karam kiye ja phal ki ichcha mat kar ae insaan
jaise karam karega waise phal dega bhagwaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan
ye hai geeta ka gyaan

Nice one, Peevisie’s Mom.

Lata did sing quite a lot after 1964 also for Shankar Jaikishen. For example
Gumnaam (1965) – title song
Amrapali (1966). many, fantastic, songs by her in this film.
Teesri Kasam (1966) – aa aa bhi ja, raat dhalne lagi
Sapnon Ka Saudagar (1968) – seekha nahin sabak
Prince (1969) – thandi thandi hawa

I think there were differences and S-J did use Sharada and Suman Kalyanpur to compensate, but had to admit that without Lata they were struggling. So I think they came to Lata. I believe Jaikishen was never really in favour of Sharada – one of the reason for differences between him and Shankar.

Maybe more knowledgeable readers can clarify.

Yes agree with Mr Raja; Sharda was the bone of contention between Shankar and Jaikishen; Sharda was introduced to the music director duo by Rajkapoor himself; after shankar’s death, sharda faced a tough time with Shankar’s sons indulging in some sort of goonda girdi; eventually sharda migrated to US and started doing private shows; she had her own charm; lata went to the extent of commenting that shankar epitomised the saying – love is blind – by having Sharda as his concubine and muse.

In Mera Naam Joker, Lata did not sing (also some reports said that she was upset that Raj Kapoor had forced her to sing – the budda mil gaya song in Sangam). Very surprising considering that the woman led such a colourful life – she projected a holier than thou image. Affairs with a cricketer, C Ramchandra, Husnlal…she tried to project a squeaky clean image with her white saree but her actions and behavior were far from ethical. Tiffs with music directors, sidelining her own sister, dubbing songs sang by other songs, using her influence for all the wrong reasons…

God knows how she is going to pay for all her sins…!

If you go by records, there are very few films that Lata sang for Shankar Jaikishen. Shankar Jaikishen’s hits in Pyar Hi Pyar (1969) & Andaz (1971) Lata’s voice was conspicuous by its absence. Reasons :

1. Jaikishen died young at the age of 42 years in 1971; with that Shankar’s career came to an end even though he continued to compose music for films like the Shatrughan Sinha – Vidya Sinha starrer “Atmaram”. (1979).

2. I am not sure but if memory serves me right – Lata did sing for Atmaram…was it “tumhare bin guzare hain kayi din”?

2. Her longstanding tiff with Mohd Rafi over loyalty issues ; Sudha Malhotra, Sharda, Suman Kalyanpur, Usha Timothy & Hemlata benefited from this – not to mention Asha Bhosle herself.

Whenever Lata sang for Shankar Jaikishen, no prizes for guessing that Shankar was forced to use her voice at the behest of the producer/ director/ hero…
