Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 30

teri tasveer mein nahin. . .

It would be an interesting exercise, to do a series of songs, wherein one song is introduced through another song. So many times it happens, a song starts to play, and the mind automatically thinks of another song that expresses similar emotions. I am sure we will be able to list numerous such pairs. There is after all, only so many emotions that the human mind plays with. It is the poet’s mind that will express the same thought in a huge variety of combinations of words.

Today’s song in this series is from the 1980 film ‘Parchhaain’. The film is produced under the banner of Moti Films, Bombay and is directed by Om Narayan Tomar. The five songs in this film are composed by Ravindra Jain, and are written by four different songwriters. This song is penned by Naqsh Lyallpuri. In the video clip, the song is performed on screen by Anil Dhawan, who is serenading his lady love, an actress I could not recognize. Then I referred to Geet Kosh; the name is Shyamlee. Rest of the star cast includes Sujit Kumar, Helen, Bindu, Pichoo Kapoor, Goga, Jezebel, Manik Chadhry, Ajay Rajput etc.

This was the year that this divine voice unexpectedly became silent. And a complete chapter, a complete era of Hindi films came to an end. The voice continued to be heard on screen for many many more years after 1980 – these were all the songs that were recorded earlier. And then, even that precious set was finally concluded. And then now there are no more new songs in this voice, a voice that we had come to love so much, and had mistakenly taken for granted as an everlasting feature of playback in Indian Cinema. Everything comes to pass, and so did the endurance of this voice.

Just the memories remain – memories forever.

Song – Maine Sau Baar Khayaalon Mein Banaaye Khaake (Parchhaain) (1980) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Naqsh Lyallpuri, MD – Ravindra Jain

Lyrics

maine sau baar khayaalon ke banaaye khaake
maine sau baar khayaalon ke banaaye khaake
ek surat hai jo rangon mein sanwarti hi nahi
maine sau baar khayaalon ke banaaye khaake

jis ke angon ki lachak maange hai daali daali
jo kai phool khila jaati hai angdaai se
jhoom kar aati hai saawan ki ghataaon ki tareh
aur lipat jaati hai aa kar meri tanhaai se
mujh se us shokh ki tasveer utarti hi nahin
maine sau baar khayaalon ke banaaye khaake

kitna rangeen hai wo shabnam se nahaaya sa badan
jis ko chhoone ke liye pyaar hai betaab mera
kaash wo husn samaa jaaye meri baahon mein
jis ki chaahat mein pareshan hai har ek khwaab mera
us ki khushboo meri saanson mein bikharti hi nahin
maine sau baar khayaalon ke banaaye khaake
ek surat hai jo rangon mein sanwarti hi nahi
maine sau baar khayaalon ke banaaye khaake

“Khayalon ke khake” – sketches in my thoughts! Lovely choice of words by Naqsh Saheb. And a beautiful song indeed! Yes, Rafi Saheb will be missed but his voice will continue to sustain us.
