“Chal Chal Re Naujawaan”(1944) was directed by Gyan Mukherji for Filmistan Limited, Bombay. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Naseem Bano, Jagdish Sethi, V H Desai, Motibai, Rafiq, Navin Yagnik etc in it.

Feminists may be up in arms on listening to the lyrics of this song where the lady speaks about performing aarti of her husband treating him as god. Well, this is a song from pre independence era. India did not have the concept of equal rights among genders (or for that matter among different communities)at that time. Concept of democracy was still into future. It was more that a decade later that women were accorded some much needed rights with the passage of Hindu Marriage act in 1956 that made polygamy illegal in India in 1956. Till then men could marry as many times as they liked. There was huge uproar at that time among traditionalists but it is to the credit of the reformers of that time that they did not yield to such pressure. Subsequently, education among women in India was srsessed upon. A lot still needs to be done and women are still regarded as subservient to men in a few conservative parts of the country but at least the laws do not discriminate against them now a days. And that is a legal protection that women did not enjoy when this song was created.
