Hullo to all in Atuldom
People talk about the rich voice quality that Amitabh Bachchan has – the baritone etc. But has it occurred to anyone that there are and were and will be other actors who have or had similar voice? One such voice was that of Mogambo. There are tales that tell how the makers of “Mr. India” went from Danny to Amjad Khan to any other known faces of that era to play the character of Mogambo. Each one had his own reason for not taking up that character and eventually Amrish Puri ended up being The Mogambo and now it is impossible to even imagine any other person as Mogambo. I am unable to distinguish the man from the character and part of the power in the role was the voice of the actor.
There was a time when people were not naming their children Pran as it was felt that the kids will all become villains and go astray as the characters played by Pran the actor in various movies. But I have not heard similar tales about this versatile actor. Oh I forgot to mention that I am talking about Amrish Puri. Born in Lahore (now part of Pakistan) in a Punjabi speaking family he was part of four sons and a daughter. His older brothers were Chaman Puri and Madan Puri both of whom were actors in Bollywood. He had his education in Shimla.
He entered the film industry in the late sixties and had acted in about 400 movies till his death. Initially he ventured into theatre when he failed his first screen test. Subsequently he was seen in Hindi, Kannada, Marathi, Punjabi, Malayalam Telugu Tamil cinema. Most of the seventies saw him play second fiddle to the main villains—Prem Chopra, Pran etc. The movies “Hum Paanch”, “Shakti”, “Vidhaata” and “Hero” in the early eighties helped in establishing his position as an actor to reckon with. Then there was no looking back.
He has featured in Hollywood ventures “Gandhi” and Steven Spielberg’s “Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom”. He had his head shaved for the character Mola Ram and the look stayed on as his identity. He is remembered for his portrayal of “Mogambo”, “Thakral” “Thakur Durjan Singh” and “Balwant Rai”. We have seen him shake a leg in a few songs where the heroine has to “dance in the villains’ den”…”Oye Oye’” from “Tridev” as also “Ghup Chup Ghup Chup” from “Karan Arjun”. He has also had a few songs where he has mouthed lines that make sense and not made a buffoon of him.
One such song is from Subhash Ghai’s “Pardes”. Today let us have this song to remember him on his death anniversary. He used to be a regular in most Subhash Ghai movies after the 1984 “Hero”. In the movies post 1995 he turned a lovable father-grand father etc. And “Pardes” had him play an NRI father Kishorilal who wants a Bahu from India so that his westernised son can learn Indian culture. (Sic!)
The song is written by Anand Bakshi and Nadeem Shravan were the music directors. The playback singers to this song are Aditya Narayan, Hariharan, Shankar Mahadevan and Kavita Krishnamurthy. This song is popular even today after all these years. Amrish Puri begins the song with Mahima Choudry, Aditya Narayan and Ajay Nagrath the main child stars. Then the song shifts to Alok Naths’ farm house where all family viz. Dina Pathak, Himani Shivpuri and Padmavati Rao and servants join the fun. The song ends with Subhash Ghai making in a Hitchcockian appearance (his normal practice).
There is another version of the song which happens in the USA where Mahima Chaudry sings it alone.
Thinking of Mogambo, Thakral, Thakur Durjan Singh, Balwant Rai, Kishorilal alias Amrish Puri(22 june 1932- 12 january 2005) today (12 january 2017) on his anniversary, gosh it is 12 years!!

During my finals in the training course of Video editing, during my stat in USA, I had made a small video (non-commercial) using two lines of the then famous song ‘I Love My India’ from film ‘Pardesh’ and many available visuals. I got grade ‘A’ in the final result.
I was hesitant to post this comment, but then remembered our Guruji’s advise to me that, I should express my views and insert the connected story, as many viewers will be interested to see such comments.
So here You are with that small video:
