He was born John Prakash Rao Janumala. He spent his childhood years in Mumbai’s Dharaavi and studied only upto class VII. Then he had to do odd jobs to overcome financial problems in the family. He was a good mimic. He started to perform in stage shows such as Tabassum Hit Parade and Kalyanji-Anandji Nite etc. He was noticed by Sunil Dutt at one of the stage shows and he got a chance in “Dard Ka Rishta” in 1981. His next big movie was Gul Anand’s – Pankaj Parashar directed movie “Jalwa”. Since then he has done around 350-400 movies.

Ok we adore him as Johnny Lever.

He is one from the current crop of comedians who were (I am sure) inspired by the likes of Mehmood and Johnny Walker. Can anyone forget his teaming up with Ashok Saraf in Rakesh Roshan’s ‘Karan Arjun’ or for that matter many Rakesh Roshan directed and produced movies be it ‘Kishen Kanhaiya’, ‘Koyla’, ‘Kaho Na Pyaar Hai’, ‘Koi Mil Gaya’. He was also part of any David Dhawan movies where his character was as important as the hero’s. He is a performer whose eyes all speak. And he is a decent dancer considering he has teamed up with Govinda, Shahrukh Khan, Aamir Khan etc. for many song and dance sequences. I just realized that he is 60 already and today (14th August) he will be 61. God!!!

Today’s song is from the 1997 Rakesh Roshan directed Shahrukh Khan Movie “Koyla”. The song is something like “Mere Saamne Waali Khidki Mein. . .” from ‘Padosan’ (1968) in the sense that on screen SRK is lip synching to Johny Lever’s singing. This is because SRK plays a mute character in the movie.

The song is in the voice of Udit Narayan, music direction is Rajesh Roshan and written by Indeevar. The song happens at the wedding reception of Raja, the tyrant zamindar role played by Amrish Puri, who has conned Madhuri into marrying him after showing the pic of the mute Shahrukh Khan (who is unaware of the con). Towards the end of the song SRK discovers the bride (who is supposed to be at the reception) sitting and crying in the bedroom with Deepshika filling in for her next to Amrish Puri.

Hullo Atuldom

I know of two movies that go by the name ‘Duniya’. One was in 1968 which had Dev Anand and Vyjayantimala in the lead and the second ‘Duniya’ (1984) had Dev Anand’s contemporary Dilip Kumar with Ashok Kumar in central roles around which Rishi Kapoor and Amrita Singh’s characters were built.

The ‘Duniya’ that came in 1968 was directed by T Prakash Rao and had a lot of popular songs like “Dooriyan Nazdeekiyan”; “Falsafa Pyar Ka Tum Kya Jaano”; the fun song “Tu Hi Meri Laxmi Tu Hi Meri Chhaaya” etc. SH Bihari, Gopaldas ‘Neeraj’, Shailendra and Hasrat Jaipuri were the lyricists and Shankar-Jaikishan were the music directors.

On going through the blog, I found that one more ‘Duniya’ is listed, which released in 1948 and had C Ramchandra for composer. I don’t have any knowledge about this movie other than the fact that on this blog all the songs from this movie are covered. For that matter even the 1968 movie has all its songs on the blog.

So now that brings us to ‘Duniya’ which released in 1984. It was produced by Yash Johar of Dharma Productions and directed by Ramesh Talwar of ‘Baseraa’ and ‘Doosra Aadmi’ fame. Its story, screenplay & dialogues are credited to Javed Akhtar. It had an impressive cast headed by Ashok Kumar and Dilip Kumar (as I have said earlier) ably supported by their colleagues of the 1950s and 1960s viz: Pran, Pradeep Kumar, and Prem Chopra. Saira Banu made a special appearance, her sole release after she retired in 1976/77. (One of her movies with Vinod Mehra as co-star, completed in 1976 released in 1988.) ‘Duniya’ also had Amrish Puri to complete the trio who wreak havoc in the life of Mohan Kumar (Dilip Kumar) which leads to the family getting separated, wife dying etc.  This means that the movie belonged to the action/ drama/ revenge genre. This movie had RD Burman’s music for songs penned by Javed Akhtar.

There is a re-run by the satellite channel Zee Classic of it programme ‘Classic Legends with Javed Akhtar’ which is basically a guided biography of legends who gave Hindi film industry some iconic movies and music. I happened to see an episode of this where RD Burman’s music was showcased. In the course of the programme Javed Akhtar has mentioned a song from ‘Duniya’ (1984).

As we all know a song is made when poetry is set to tune in a manner that it can be sung. There are times when the reverse can also happen. A musician thinks of a tune and has a song written to go with it. Javed Akhtar spoke of a song where RD had a tune for which the mukhda (opening stanza) would end in a tune that follows the tune of “Tanhaayi Mein Tadpaane Ko” from SD Burman’s song “Jeewan Ke Safar Mein Raahi” from ‘Munim ji’ (1955).  He was telling it was almost as if RD was paying tribute to his father.

Today on RD’s 78th birth anniversary I think we should have this particular song. ‘Duniya’ was not that successful and I don’t think any of its songs are in public memory. Even I remembered it only when I heard Javed Akhtar mention it. Everytime a movie flops, it takes its music of the movie down with it. I think this is what happened to the songs of this film.

So here is the song which was written by Javed Akhtar for a tune set by RD Burman inspired by his father’s tune. It is sung by Kishore Kumar to Rishi Kapoor’s lip-syncing. We can also see Amrish Puri overseeing the actions of Rishi Kapoor and Javed Khan, the fellow who walks away with Amrita’s bag.

“Thevar Magan” was a 1992 Tamil movie produced by Kamal Hassan and directed by Bharathan with music by Ilaiyaraja and a cast of Sivaji Ganesan, Kamal Hassan, Revathi, Gouthami and Nassar. The story in one line is thus- a reluctant educated son ascending a throne full of thorns. This movie was remade in Hindi in 1997 by Mushir-Riaz produtions with Priyadarshan as the director. Here the cast was headed by Anil Kapoor and Amrish Puri with Milind Gunaji, Tabu and Pooja Batra. Both movies credited Kamal Hssan as the storywriter.

Whenever I hear of a remake either from Hindi to any language that I understand – Tamil, Malayalam, Marathi, Gujarati or even say Telugu or Punjabi (both of which I have limited knowledge of) I make it a point to see both versions. The vice-versa also happens i.e. from regional language to Hindi, then too I see both versions, it is enlightening to see how actors understand the same character and portray them. To this end I have seen Drishyam in three languages and I felt that Mohanlal in Malayalam was good and Ajay Devgan in Hindi did not disappoint though Kamalhassan in Tamil failed to impress (my view which I feel the others may not agree to) in Papanasam (that was the title in Tamil). I have seen many other remakes too, the last one being a remake of Bhagwan Dada’s “Albela” in Telugu and Sachin Pilgaonkar’s “Ashi Hi Banwa Banwi” which I discovered was a remake of Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s “Biwi Aur Makaan”.

So, coming back to “Thevar Magan” and “Virasat” both were engrossing movies with good songs and lot of action. And it can be safely said that Amrish Puri’s version of the Raja Thakur matched Sivaji Ganesan’s Periya Thevar. And Anil Kapoor matched Kamalhassan in portraying the educated foreign-returned Thakur/ Shaktivel Thevar. Added to all this Anu Malik gave music almost at par with Ilaiyaraja, reusing some of the original tunes. Today’s song is one of the reused tunes. It has Amrish Puri lip-syncing in Hariharan’s voice. The song runs with the opening titles. There are two other portions of the song; one after the Thakur comes home angry after facing humiliation in the village panchayat and another portion of the song plays when the Thakur dies of a heart attack and the whole village is sad.

Today(22 june 2018) it is the birth anniversary of Amrish Puri. He was an all-round entertainer. He had acted in about 400 films between 1967 and 2005. I suppose the first time I took note of him was in the movies ‘Dostana’ where he played the villain’s henchman in Prem Chopra’s gang and ‘Naseeb’ where he was one among a horde of villains like Prem Chopra, Kadar Khan, Shakti Kapoor and Amjad Khan. Of course, at the same time we saw him in some Rajshri Production movies as a Chowdhary who refuses to acknowledge that his family is on bad times and his daughter needs to work to run the house as in “Saawan Ko Aane do”. He was a tyrant village head in Bapu’s “Hum Paanch”; numerous movies where he was the dreaded bad character his best being the memorable Mogambo in “Mr. India”. In the 90s he also became a loving father, grandfather; displayed his comic timing in movies like “Chachi420” and “Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kate” etc. I have sat through many movies that I have mentioned just to enjoy Amrish Puri whether as Durgaprasad Bharadwaj (Chachi 420) or Retired Inspector Abhyankar (Jhooth Bole Kauwa Kate) or Chaudhry Baldev Singh (DDLJ) or Thakur Durjan Singh (Karan Arjun) to name a few.

Remembering Mogambo on his birth anniversary with this song from “Virasat” which is written by Jaaved Akhtar.

There are songs that run their course during their time and are then forgotten with time. Most of these songs that end up forgotten are unlikely to get a second look in future. But there are exceptions. Some interesting developments may rekindle interest in such songs among future generations as well.

The first such song that readiliy comes to my mind is the song “April Fool banaaya to unko gussa aaya” from “April Fool”(1964). This song was a reasonably popular song of its time which then got forgotten. It was in 1980s when “Andha Kaanoon”(1983) was released that the title song of “April Fool”(1964) caught the fancy of music lovers once again. In the movie “Andha Kanoon”(1983), inspector Durga Devi Singh (Hema Malini) is trying to secretly record the confession of her brother Vijay Kumar Singh (Rajnikant) how he killed the murderers of their father. But when she plays the recording then instead of the confession, this title song “April Fool banaaya” gets played, much to the cheer of movie watchers. Many movie watchers became aware of this “April Fool”(1964) song thanks to this scene of “Andha Kaanoon”(1983). Even I began to take a second look at this song only as a result of this scene of “Andha Kaanoon”(1983).

“April Fool”(1964) title song saw a revival thanks to a movie that was released two decades later. But sometimes songs can see revivals and renewed public interest in them because of reasons that have nothing to do with films !

Take the case of the “Nagina”(1986) song, Main teri dushman dushman tu mera. This song has suddenly become quite popular these days, not only among Indians, but even among non Indians. 🙂

The reasons are non filmy, and they have to do with cricket !

Yes, indeed it is a cricketing incident involving non India players that this “Nagina”(1986) song has become popular. More than the song, it is the picturisation of the song that has caught the fancy of cricket loving public.

Let me explain the situation for those who may not be aware of the cricketing incident. A three nation T20 cricket tournament involving India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh is in progress at the moment, where every team plays its opponents twice. The two top teams then play the final.

In the first match between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh on Sunday 11 march 2018, Sri Lanka after batting first piled up a huge total of 214. Bangladesh, who were not expected to be able to overhaul the total batted spiritedly and emerged victorious, scoring the winning runs with two balls to spare. The hero of Bangladesh win was their diminutive batsman wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim who played a scintillating unbeaten knock of 72 from 35 balls to clinch a famous victory for his team. In an earlier T20 match in the past, he had celebrated prematurely thinking that his team had won, but his team ended up losing to India by one run in that match. Here Mushfiqur celebrated only after he hit the winning run. And how did he celebrate ? He did a “Naagin” dance, Sridevi style.

His “Naagin” dance celebration overshadowed even the victory of his team. Some criticised him for his immaturity, some supported him, some called for restraint, some ridiculed him. On social media, one found Mushfiqur getting trolled. On youtube, there were several videos in which his photo was superimposed over SriDevi’s in that “Main teri dushman” song.

I had watched this song and the movie in a movie hall during the time this movie was released in 1986. This song was popular but I did not take much notice of the song then. But this time, after 32 years, I took a second look at this song. For that I have to thank Mushfiqur Rahim of Bangladesh!

The fact that a Bangladeshi cricketer is aware of this song and he is in fact a fan of Sri devi’s Naagin dance movement is news to me. 🙂
In the second match between the same two opponents, Mushfiqur Rahim, after batting well for some time, threw his wicket away and this time the Sri Lankan bowler did a “sapera” dance movement, as Sapera played by Amrish Puri does in the song picturisation. So, even Sri Lankans were aware of this Hindi movie song ! The fact that the fans too were aware of it was proved when cameras showed a placard being carried by some fans showing a sketch of a sapera and a naagin. 🙂

Just imagine, a Hindi movie song of 1986 catching so much attention of non Indian cricketers. It is clear that these cricketers must have watched the movie, or at least the song picturisation.

With these two matches attracting the attention of cricket fans world wide, even non Asian cricket fans are bound to take notice of this “Naagin” song and some of them may get interested in this song. 🙂

The fact that foreign cricketers have begun to take interest in Indian movies, thanks to so many of them playing in IPL, is no secret. A few weeks ago, South African bowler Lungi Ngidi was snapped up by Chennai Super Kings in IPL auction. The bowler then tweeted

Just listened to the #LungiDance song loving it already.

The tweet was retweeted and liked thousands of time, mostly by Indians.

Foreign players are even getting interested in learning Hindi. On the eve of Deepaawali of 2017, India played New Zealand in an ODI match. New Zealand won the match, thanks to the batting of Ross Taylor of New Zealand. Sehwag tweeted:-

Well played @RossLTaylor Darji ji . Great effort after handling the pressure of Diwali orders .#indvsnz

— Virender Sehwag (@virendersehwag) October 22, 2017

Guess what ! Look at the response of Ross Taylor:-

Thanks @virendersehwag bhai agli Baar Apna order time pe Bhej dena so Mai Apko agli Diwali ke pehle deliver kardunga ….happy Diwali

So one can say that foreign cricketers are getting interested in things Indian. This is because India is now emerging as an attractive destination for opportunities in many areas, including cricket. Foreign cricketers have begun to take lots of interest in India because of IPL. Forget active cricketers, even retired cricketers are getting involved in various capacities viz mentors, coaches, commentators etc. When it comes to commentary, opportunities are increasing. The TV channels have now started to offer commentary in Hindi and some other languages as well. So ex cricketers able to speak in these languages are in demand as commentators. Ex cricketers like Sehwag and V V S Laxman have emerged as a much sought after Hindi commentary jodi. Even Gavaskar, Ganguly, Murli Kartik etc do Hindi commentary. In the present tri series underway in Sri Lanka, I found Athar Ali Khan too being called up for Hindi commentary. He understands Hindi but cannot speak in it. Hopefully he will brush up in his Hindi speaking then he can find more commentary opportunities.

The movie “Nagina”(1986) was produced and directted by Harmesh Malhotra. The movie had Rishi Kapoor, Sridevi, Amrish Puri, Komal, Prem Chopra, Sushma Seth, Pinchoo Kapoor, Viju Khote, Guddi Maruti, Lalita Kumari, Baby Guddo, Manmouji, Jagdeep, Satyadevi, Rajan, Sheetal, Suresh etc in it.

The movie had five songs in it.

Here is the first song from “Nagina”(1986). This song is sung by Lata. Anand Bakshi is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. The song is picturised as a naagin-sapera song on Sridevi, playing naagin, and Amrish Puri (playing sapera). Amrish Puri is assisted by many other saperas in the picturisation. 🙂

With this song, whose song picturisation has attracted so much attention in a couple of cricket matches played in 2018 between two international teams, “Nagina”(1986) makes its debut in the blog.
