“Gaddaar” (1973) was produced and directed by Harmesh Malhotra and starred Vinod Khanna, Yogita Bali, Pran, Iftekhar, Madan Puri, Anwar Hussain, Ranjeet, Manmohan, Ajit, Padma Khanna, etc. The three songs in this movie were penned by Anand Bakshi and were composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Watching this movie, during its initial release and many a times subsequently, always gave me pleasure. It is a kind of story which you usually read in a James Hadley Chase novel or some Hollywood heist caper. A major heist goes off as planned, until one person double crosses the team. The rest of the movie is about how those involved hunt for the traitor who has disappeared with the loot from their last big heist.

The movie is an intriguing and gripping thriller that boasts of brilliant performances, witty dialogues and much more. You should definitely not miss this one.

“Solid cast with Pran, Iftekhar, Anwar Hussain, Madan Puri, Vinod Khanna, Manmohan, Ranjit, Ajit, etc. All are good. The plot is very good. It is probably based on some English crime novel. Unlike a typical Hindi movie, there are no clear heroes and villains. There are shades of gray which is unusual and makes the movie worth watching. Also, every character seems to have something special in him in spite of so many of them. Snowy locations are spectacular in this. “

Today(10 march 2018) is Padma Khanna’s 69th birthday. We, all here at Atuldom, wish her a long and healthy life. She currently lives in New Jersey, USA and is the founder and principal of Indianica Academy, where she and others teach youngsters Kathak and fusion dances to Indian Folk dancing for Bollywood enthusiasts.

We celebrate her birthday with this fast cabaret song sung by Lata Mangeshkar, penned by Anand Bakshi and composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. It is lip synced by Padma Khanna as she dances with the dance master Oscar (of Vijay Oscar Team). The song has heavy prelude and postlude music with an Arabian feel and tempo.

“Gaddaar”(1973) makes its debut in the blog with this song.

A trained Kathak dancer,Padma Khanna debuted with the Bhojpuri film Bhaiyya (1960/61?). Her initial Hindi films include Saawan Ki Ghata and Biwi aur Makaan.
It was the Johnny Mera Naam number,Husn ke lakhon rang…. that made her famous.
Her other notable songs include….
Home lagi hai raat jawaan ( Naina. Picturised once on PK and next on Moushumi Chatterjee. Asha Bhonsle won a Filmfare award for this song.)
Aap ka sarkar,kya kuchh kho gaya hai( Hera Pheri)
Sajna hai mujhe sajna ke liye ( Saudagar. Cast opposite Amitabh Bachchan, the movie’s assistant director later became her husband.)
Pyar thujhe aisi karoongi sanam (Kashmakash).
She was a big name in Bhojpuri films. Has acted in Marathi, Gujarati films,too.
For the TV viewers, she is Kaikeyi of Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayana.
PK is running a dance academy in USA.

Padma Khanna did have a good role in Hrishikesh Mukherjee`s Aashirwad(1968) but in that movie her name is Kumari Padma/Padma Kumari

PCji,in many of her initial movies,she was billed as Padma or Padma Kumari. I think Hemant Kumar production,Biwi Aur Makaan, directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee was her first Hindi movie. She played Mehmood’s ‘real’ wife! The ‘artificial’ wife was played by Keshto Mukherjee in this comedy caper. Can you believe in one of the ten songs from this movie, Mukhesh, Manna Dey, Hemant Kumar and Talat Mahmood have sung together? There are many more wonderful combinations like this. Do listen to them.
