When our dear Atul ji recently started an ‘innovative’ initiative under the ‘ten-year challenge’ or ‘Blog ten-year challenge’ I felt excited and browsed through some dates of February 2009 on the blog to check about the songs and the the movies which featured on these dates ten year back.

I also mentioned in my comments on the blog that I would try to contribute as possible for this ‘challenge’ too. However, since I already have few of my earlier articles to be finished and other topics on my list, I could not contribute much to it till now. But I can see few opportunities for me in the coming days of this month 🙂

When I checked the songs posted ten years back for February 9th, I find that all the movies that were represeted that day viz. ‘Kismat-1968’, ‘Jugnu-1973’, ‘Brahmachari-1968’, ‘Sadhna-1958’, ‘Udan Khatola-1955’, ‘Paapi-1953’ and ‘Badi Bahan-1949’ have already been Yippeeeed’ on the blog or all songs from these movies have been covered on the blog.

The name of this movie ‘Paapi-1953’ reminded me of ‘Paapi-1977’. Though I had not watched this movie ‘Paapi-1977’, its name had been in my vague memory since my childhood and whenever I had been going through HFGK Vol. V, I had always thought of presenting a song from this movie since it belongs to the ‘Seventies’. This would also serve my purpose of ‘introducing the movie with same titles’ on the blog.

On our blog we already have ‘Paapi-1943’ and ‘Paapi-1953’ launched earlier.

Today ‘Paapi-1977’ makes its debut on the blog …

‘Paapi-1977’ was produced and directed by O.P. Ralhan for his home productions ‘Ralhan Productions. Bombay’. O.P. Ralhan also wrote the story and screenplay of this movie. Dialogues of this movie were written by Qamar Jalalabadi. Editing for this movie was done by Vasant Borkar.

It had Sunil Dutt, Sanjeev Kumar, Zeenat Aman, Reena Roy, Prem Chopra, Padma Khanna, Madan Puri, Iftekhar, Durga Khote, Jagdish Raj, Jatin, Appi Umrani, Dhanraj, Tuntun, Moolchand, Baby Deepa, Rajan Kapoor, Master Vikas, and Alka with O.P. Ralhan, Kamaldeep, Rajnath, Sheela, Ratan Gaurang, Jawahar Kaul and others.

Danny Dengzongpa makes a special appearance in this movie. Hina Kausar, Manmohan Krishan, Kamal Kapoor, Nana Palsikar, Sudhir makes a guest appearance in this movie.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 10.01.1977.

As per HFGK there are nine songs in this movie written by Naqsh Lyallpuri (five songs), Kulwant Jani (three songs) and Harindranath Chatopadhyay (one song). Lata Mangeshkar, Mohd Rafi, Mahendra Kapoor, Ranu Mukherji and Miss Lorna had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

Music for this movie was composed by Bappi Lahiri. And on listening to few songs from this movie one may think of its composed by Pancham Da, same like the music of ‘Chhaila Babu-1977’ which was composed by Laxmikant-Pyarelal in R.D. Burman style 🙂
I do not remember it, but I don’t think that I had listened to any of the songs from this movie earlier. Except the song that I am presenting today which after listening sound somewhat familiar to me or may be which I had heard on radio earlier. This song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and lyrics are by Naqsh Lyallpuri.
Also, I think that the songs from this movie may have been forgotten and none of them became popular.

From the nine songs in this movie Lata Mangeshkar has sung as many as four solo songs in this movie. Rafi Saab had one solo, while Mahendra Kapoor had two solo songs, and Ranu Mukherji and Lorna had sung one duet song in this movie.

On listening few times this song grows and I like it too.

Music is composed by Bappi Lahiri as mentioned above.

Since I have not watched this movie, I can’t say much about it or the songs from this movie. I would request knowledgeable readers to throw more light on this movie and its songs. Though, going by the star-cast of this movie I think this must be an ‘entertaining’ and ‘interesting to watch’ movie…

Let us now enjoy the today’s song from ‘Paapi-1977’ which is performed on screen by Zeenat Aman and we can see Prem Chopra, Padma Khanna, and others in the picturization of this song …

(Lyrics have been noted down as per the audio link which is a longer link)

The movie had six songs in it. Five songs have been covered in the past. Here are the details of the five songs covered so far:-

Here is the sixth and final song from “Pardesi”(1970) to appear in the blog. This song is sung by Lata and Usha Mangeshkar. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Chitragupta.

What a hidden gem of a song it is ! It is a synchronised dance song picturised on Mumtaz and Padma Khanna. The picturisation shows people gathered around the dancers who sing and dance while we have Manmohan Krishna playing “Been” and a gentleman (whom I am unable to identify) playing guitar.

This song can be described as a snake dance song, a dance form which has become quite popular nowadays thanks to Bangladeshi cricketers. 🙂 The snake dance steps of theb Bangladeshi cricketers were taken from the “Nagina”(1986) song Main teri dushman dushman tu meri main naagan to sapera. This dance step has been mass copied by Sri Lankan cricket watching public as well as famous people (like Sunil Gavaskar, for instance) by now. So the “novelty” value of that snake dance step has been lost. Have no worry. Here is another snake dance song, one that is performed by Mumtaz and Padma Khanna. Being a synchronised dance song, it is a fit snake dance song for a pair of Bangladeshi batsmen batting together at the crease. They can dance like Mumtaz and Padma Khanna whenever they feel that that are on the verge of winning a match. 🙂 And do not forget to give credit to me for this wonderful snake dance song. 🙂

With this song, “Pardesi”(1970) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Here is the fifth and final song from “Anokhi Ada”(1973) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Manna Dey and Asha Bhonsle. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

This song is picturised on Mehmood and Padma Khanna. I have not watched the movie so I have no idea what is going on in the picturisation. My guess is that this song is past of a comic side plot of the movie where Mehmood eats a tablet to become younger but ends up becoming older. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song.

With this song, “Anokhi Ada”(1973) joins the list of movies that have all their songs covered in the blog.

Song-Jawaani tera bolbaala (Anokhi Ada)(1973)Singers-Manna Dey, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics- Majrooh Sultanpuri, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Chorus

kya ho gaye re saanwariya
wo baal kaale kaale
kya ho gaye re saanwariya
wo baal kaale kaale
dekhe nahin jaate re sainya
ye gaal dheele dhaale
wo roop rang saajan
kisne utaar daala

jawaani tera bolbaala
budhaape tera munh kaala

chaaha thha jawaan hoke main
har naari ko sunder dekhoon
jo chehra dikhe na baahar
main parde ke andar dekhoon
is liye khaayi thhi goli
lekin ye kisko khabar thhi
wo zaalim goli kar degi
yoon mera deewaala
jawaani tera bolbaala
budhaape tera munh kaala

chaahe to jatan main kar doon
aaja balamwa pyaaare
chaahe to jatan main kar doon
aaja balamwa pyaare
garwa mere lag lag ke
phir se jawaan ho jaa re
ye sir ka baal sajna
ho jaaye phir se kaala

jawaani tera bolbaala
budhaape tera munh kaala
jawaani tera bolbaala
budhaape tera munh kaala

Here is the fourth song from “Anokhi Ada”(1973) to appear in the blog. The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Majrooh Sultanpuri is the lyricist. Music is composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

The song is picturised as a dance song on Padma Khanna and other female dancers with village folks watching the performance. In the past, we had Sadhana losing her jhumka. Here Padma Khanna has lost her Nathhni. In both these occasions, it is Asha Bhonsle, who reports about the missing ornament.

Gaddaar (1973) was produced and directed by Harmesh Malhotra and starred Vinod Khanna, Yogita Bali, Pran, Iftekhar, Madan Puri, Anwar Hussain, Ranjeet, Manmohan, Ajit, Padma Khanna, etc. The three songs in this movie were penned by Anand Bakshi and were composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal.

Watching this movie, during its initial release and many a times subsequently, always gave me pleasure. It is a kind of story which you usually read in a James Hadley Chase novel or some Hollywood heist caper. A major heist goes off as planned, until one person double crosses the team. The rest of the movie is about how those involved hunt for the traitor who has disappeared with the loot from their last big heist.

The movie is an intriguing and gripping thriller that boasts of brilliant performances, witty dialogues and much more. You should definitely not miss this one.

As Greta Memsaab says, she was “positively riveted to my chair” while watching this movie. Read her review of this movie here

A reviewer on IMDB says;

“Solid cast with Pran, Iftekhar, Anwar Hussain, Madan Puri, Vinod Khanna, Manmohan, Ranjit, Ajit, etc. All are good. The plot is very good. It is probably based on some English crime novel. Unlike a typical Hindi movie, there are no clear heroes and villains. There are shades of gray which is unusual and makes the movie worth watching. Also, every character seems to have something special in him in spite of so many of them. Snowy locations are spectacular in this. “

Today(10 march 2018) is Padma Khanna’s 69th birthday. We, all here at Atuldom, wish her a long and healthy life. She currently lives in New Jersey, USA and is the founder and principal of Indianica Academy, where she and others teach youngsters Kathak and fusion dances to Indian Folk dancing for Bollywood enthusiasts.

We celebrate her birthday with this fast cabaret song sung by Lata Mangeshkar, penned by Anand Bakshi and composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal. It is lip synced by Padma Khanna as she dances with the dance master Oscar (of Vijay Oscar Team). The song has heavy prelude and postlude music with an Arabian feel and tempo.

“Gaddaar”(1973) makes its debut in the blog with this song.

Song-Wai wai main jal gayi (Gaddaar)(1973) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Laxmikant Pyarelal

Pavri, cinematography by Fali Mistry, edited by Pran Mehra and was released on the 19th of October 1973. The playback was by Asha Bhosle, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar and Dev Anand, lyrics were by Sahir Ludhianvi and the composer was R D Burman.

The storyline (according to IMDB) is:

Jailor Manmohan Krishan is responsible for looking after convicts undergoing sentences of rigorous imprisonment. He has a young, beautiful and captive daughter named Shalini. Shalini is a poet, one day while reciting her poetry, she meets with a young man, who introduces himself as Amar, who also happens to be a poet himself. The two of them spend beautiful moments together and finds themselves attracted to each other. Shalini wants to find out why Amar is in jail. She is told in no uncertain terms that Amar is in jail for murder – for killing the brother of his former lover, Sapna. She also found out that this is not true and would strive to the best of her merit to get Amar release from jail because she is in love with him and would like to marry him.

In this song, Padma Khanna lip syncs and dances with a male counterpart (unidentified) to “Kaanp Rahi Main” in Joshila 1973 sung by Asha Bhonsle, penned by Sahir Ludhianvi and composed by Rahul Dev Burman,

There were eight songs in the movie, of which four have been covered earlier in this blog. This is the fifth song to be posted.
