“Sangeet” (1992) is a movie I have seen in parts on satellite television, don’t remember if I have seen the whole of it. Whatever I have seen has stayed with me and here is synopsis of the movie:
(1) Madhuri Dixit played a double role of mother-daughter. This, at a time when she was a glamour doll in other movies, Madhuri had a de-glamourised look as both mother and daughter. (2) Madhuri, as the daughter, was a blind girl staying in a under-construction building with Jackie Shroff as her neighbour. (3) Even Jackie had a role different from what he was playing in those days i.e. he was an out of work folk artist who has come to the big city in search of a appreciative audience. (4) Shafi Inamdaar played a wealthy man who marries the mother-Madhuri and Nitish Bharadwaj was her lover who she couldn’t marry. (5) Satish Shah played a music composer who has no qualms about hijacking other people’s tune and passing it off as his own. As per imbd.com it is the story of a blind orphan girl who has dreams of being a successful singer and reaches her goal with the help of another street singer and in the process discovers her parents too.
This was possibly the only Hindi movie which K. Viswanath directed, which was not a remake of his own Telugu hits. And in Madhuri he had a competent performer who did justice to both the roles, this was one of her underrated movies. Possibly the Hindi audience didn’t take too well to the story and the movie bombed. But both the lead actors had ‘hatke’ roles (an oft-repeated phrase among film makers). The melodies were the doing of Anand- Milind and Santosh Anand was the lyricist. Anuradha Paudwal, Suresh Wadkar, Pankaj Udhas, Jolly Mukherjee etc were the playback singers. Today’s song has Jolly Mukherjee giving his voice for Jackie Shroff.
Madhuri Dixit and Jackie have acted together in about 12 movies but this is one jodi that doesn’t come to the notice of Hindi film fans. They have been lovers, friends, bhabhi-devar, brother-sister (I am sure no one remembers that in “Tridev” they played siblings) etc. They have been good friends all through the years as is evident from the various times they have come together on TV and videos available on the internet.
Today we are having a song to wish Jaikishan Kakubhai Shroff a.k.a Jackie Shroff on his 64th birthday. He has been in the industry for close to 40 years beginning his journey as the villain’s henchman in a Dev Anand movie- he played Shakti Kapoor’s chamcha in Dev Anand’s “Swami Dada”. He is forever indebted to Subhash Ghai and has gone on record to say that he is ready to stand-in for the props in his movie if Subhash Ghai even mentions it. This is evident from the characters he has played in Ghai’s movies- father of Kareena Kapoor and his sisters, a guest appearance in “Saudagar”, a tiny role in “Trimurti”- I can go on quoting Shubash Ghai movies starring Jaggu Dada as he is fondly addressed in the industry. His journey into the filmworld was through the modelling world. He is the father of Tiger (Jai Hemant) Shroff the current heart-throb of the youngsters. Jackie Shroff is one of the actors of the ’80s whose movies I love to see the others being Anil Kapoor, Sunny Deol, and Govinda.

The story you have given of the film is enlightening. Whichever way you describe it, it is still the tried and tested ‘lost and found’ theme. I am wondering how come I have not seen this 1992 film.
About the song, I remember that it used to be a favourite. I had also thought of doing the post of this folksy song, but never got around to it. I thought this was a song by Abhijeet, but Jolly mukherjee is a new name for me. This is his first song in the blog.
