“Mast Qalandar”(1955) was a costume drama (Veshbhoosha pradhan) movie. It was produced by Gulshan Bahl and directed by Kedar Kapoor for N C Films, Bombay. The movie had Shakila, Mahipal, Tiwari, Noor, Helen, Khairaati, Johnny Walker, Ramesh Thakur, Naaz, Devika, Pappu Bahal, Sarita, JohnHaig, P C Bajaj, Bachcha, Fazal,Bihari, Parsa, Govind, Laal, Khanna, Khursheed, Heeralal Sen,H Prem, Pandey etc in it.
I wonder what was the meaning of veshbhoosha pradhan movie, which was a common classification of movies given in HFGK. Out of 131 movies released in 1955, as many as 28 movies were classified as veshbhoosha pradhan in HFGK. Going by the titles of these movies, most of these movies do not appear to be movies that may have much to do with costumes or dresses. For example, movies with titles like “Aadamkhor”, “Bhedi Lutera”, “Daaku”, “Luteraa”, “Sakhi Lutera”, “Shaahi Chor”, “Taatar Ka Chor”, “Teen Sardaar”, “Teerandaaz”- all these movies are veshbhoosha pradhaan movies.
If “Shaahi Chor” and “Taatar Ka Chor” were veshbhoosha pradhan, then how come “Baghdad Ka Chor”, released in the same year was not ? It was classified as Kalpnic (imaginary) story. “Teen Sardaar” is veshbhoosha pradhan, but “Sardaar” is social (samajik). 🙂
Same movie, if released twice, gets classified differently. “Amar Kahaani”(1949) is classified as a “social” (samajik) movie, but when it was re- released in 1955 under the name of “Kanchan”(1955), it was described as of kaalpnik (imaginary) genre.
By the way, these classifications are HFGK classifications and they need not be taken too literally. HFGK was mainly about listing of songs in movies. HFGK tried to do its own classification of movies slottng them into different genre or categories, but these classifications are not very accurate. By the way, movies or 1955 got classified in the following categories:

Coming to our veshbhoosha pradhaan movie “Mast Qalandar”(1955), it had 8 songs in it. Four songs have been covered in the blog. Here is the fifth song from the movie to appear in the blog.
The song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. Asad Bhopali is the l;yricist. Music is composed by Hansraj Bahl.
The song, with violin music, does not sound like it belongs to a veshbhoosha pradhan movie. Going by the music, it appears to be a suspense song of sorts. By the way, the category of suspense movie or thriller movies are conspicuous by their absence in HFGK, even though movies of this genre were very much getting released those days. names like “Aar Paar”, “Baazi”, Howrah Bridge” etc readily come to mind.
Only audio of this song is available. I request our knowledgeable readers to throw light on the picturisation of the song as well as on the story of this movie.
