Blog Day :

5443 Post No. : 17842

Today (13 June 2023)is the birth centenary of Prem Dhawan (13 June 1923-7 May 2001).

When I was growing up, I knew him as the lyricist of patriotic songs. Among his most well known songs to me were “O mera rang de basanti chola” from “Shaheed”(1965), “Ae mere pyaare watan tujhpe dil qurbaan” from “Kabuliwala”(1961) and “Chhodo kal ki baaten kal ki baat puraani” from Hum Hindustani(1960). Though I knew him mainly as a lyricist, sometimes he would double up as lyricist cum music director, as in “Shaheed”(1965) and “Pavitra Paapi”(1970).

Much later, when I took to blogging with this blog, I gradually came to know that he was not just a lyricist and a music director, but he was an actor and choreographer as well. He acted in two movies “Laajawaab”(1950) and “goonj uthi shehnaai”(1957). He choreographed in seven movies.

Not just memorable patriotic songs, he has also penned some memorable songs of other genre as well. Chal mere ghode tik tik tik, one of the most iconic children’s song, is penned by him.
The song, that became Binaca geetmala theme song, is penned by him. This song is Pom pom pom baaja boley (Aasmaan)(1952)

Take some of the Prem Dhawan songs for example:-

sab kuchh luta ke hosh mein aaye to kya kiya (Ek Saal)(1957),
Seene me sulagte hain armaan(Taraana)(1951),
Teri duniya se door chale hoke majboor (Zabak)(1961) ,
Ghareebon ki suno wo tumhaari sunega (Das Lakh)(1966),
Kaun rang mungwa kawan rang motiyaan(Heera Moti)(1959),
Chanda re ja re ja re(Ziddi)(1948),
Dil ko laakh sambhaala ji(Guest House)(1959),
Main to chala jidhar chale rasta(Dhadkan)(1972),
Teri duniya se hoke majboor chala(Pavitra Paapi)(1970),
Ye mast nazar shokh adaa kiske liye hai (Bandi)(1957) ,
Maane na maane na manmohan (Madam XYZ)(1959),
Haseen ho Khudaa to nahin ho (Mud Mud Ke Naa Dekh)(1960) ,
Kabhi na bigde kisi ki motor raste mein (Moti Mahal) (1952),
Ek to soorat pyaari aur oopar se ye naaz (Vallah Kya Baat Hai)(1962),
Teri nazar mein main rahoon (Band Master)(1962)

and lots and lots of songs…

Interestingly, bulk of well known songs of Prem Dhawan, whether as a lyricist or as a music director, are already showcased in the blog. Still, we are only halfway there. Prem Dhawan, as a lyricist penned some 936 songs. The blog had 475 of them.

Ten years ago, on this date (viz on 13 July 2013), we had covered a song from “Passing Show”(1956). “Passing Show”(1956) was directed by Bhagwan for Mukul Pictures, Bombay. The movie had Chandrashekhar, Shakila, Poornima, Daljeet etc in it. The movie had six songs in it. Three songs have been covered in the blog so far.

Today, ten years later, here is another song from “Passing Show”(1956). This song is sung by Geeta Dutt. Prem Dhawan is the lyricist. Music is composed by Manohar.

There is one remark online suggesting that this song is inspired from “put another nickel in”(1949) by Teresa Brewer. But I find the resemblence only vague. If this “Passing Show”(1956) song is inspired from that American pop song, then it must be said that it is a fantastic copy, that sounds better than the original to me. When a foreign tune is adopted in a Hindi movie, then the job of the lyricist becomes really important. Prem Dhawan has come up with great lyrics that suit the situation, which sounds like a club dance song situation to me.

By the way, try singing the Maggi jingle, “maggi maggi maggi”. That too appears to be inspired from the same tune.

Lyrics of the song were sent to me by Prakashchandra.

We take this opportunity to pay our tributes to Prem Dhawan on the occasion of the centenary of his birthday.

Atul Ji,
Thanks for the post. I have always paid less attention to lyricists (but not to lyrics). This is the first occasion I am knowing Prem Dhavan and his body of work and his versatality, in detail. The song is decent.

Absolutely same tune as the Maggi Jingle.
Such a lively song

Thanks Atul ji,
A really peppy song with joie de vivre in the cheerful voice of Geeta Dutt. I endorse your view that copy or inspiration aside, it’s a fantastic song.
