Mukesh and his Composers – 28A
——————————————–

As we continue our journey of posting obscure gems of Mukesh which are relatively less heard, we come across many interesting and sometimes unfortunate stories in the making of some the films. Sudhir ji sought to know, if I would be interested in posting a song from the film Society (early 70s, 1987, 2019). I said, I am aware that the song from this film is available, but I would take it up sometime later. However, he said that it must be part of the celebration of Mukesh’s birth centenary. It was an offer I could not refuse or postpone and hence this post.

I have heard this song (in two parts in the film) long time back but had not found an opportunity or reason to get it posted. Also, recently Zafar Bhai of Delhi had posted the full film on RMIM group and that is when I started gathering more info of this film.

Discussion about this film, I am afraid, will be with a lot of assumptions. Readers must have noticed the peculiar year of release that I have written above. Nothing less, but nearly half a century of difference from the making to the release.

The film cast included Reena Roy, Rakesh Pandey, Sarita, Johnny Whisky, Manhar Desai, Abhijit Sen, Dulari, Manorama, Dilip Dutt, Prince Shakeel and others. The film was written and directed by BR Ishara and produced by Johnny Whisky under the banner of J Films.

The credit titles show that Mukesh was the sole playback singer in the entire film. The lyricist is Anjaan and the music director Narayan Naidu. This was probably the first and last film composition of the hapless music director. Narayan Naidu is not to be confused with Narayan Dutt who scored for a few films in late 60’s and 70’s including Pujarin (1969) in which Mukesh has two outstanding solos. As far as the music director is concerned, there appears to be no other trace of him trying something else. I wonder what happens to such artists who get estranged from the film world for no fault of theirs.

From the looks of Renna Roy, it appears that the film was completed in early seventies itself but was not passed by the censor board. Late eighties might the period when the Mukesh song in two parts was released in EP. There are quite a few uploads on YouTube wherein the complete film is available. It appears that the film was finally released on 28/08/2019 in digital format. The censor certificate cites Swami Films Entertainments Pvt. Ltd. as the name of the applicant. The name of the producer is retained as Johnny Whisky. So, from making of the film in early 70’s to its release in 2019 is nearly half a century. Oof.

Interestingly, myswar website gives an interesting trivia based on info from HFGK that this film was also initially titled ‘Sab Asli Sab Naqli’. From the story line that I saw in a jiffy, it appears that it could have been a possible title. It appears that the film had some bold scenes and was ahead of its times. Apparently for that reason, it did not get through the censor board. With so many untied ends to the making and the release of the film, I request more knowledge readers to add their experience and know-how of this film. I will be thankful if someone who has seen the film to write the plot in the comments section.

Fortunately for Renna Roy fans (self-included), she continued and succeeded with other films and became a craze in those days. 🙂

For the sole song in the film, the composer and the lyricist have fared well in their departments. However, it is the rendition by Mighty Mukesh that soothes and continues to linger in the mind.

For listening pleasure of the readers, onto yet another relatively less heard gem in the voice of Mukesh.

Song – Dil Mere Re, Tu Akela Tha Tu Akela Hai  (Soceity)  (1970s) Singer – Mukesh, Lyrics – Anjaan, MD – Narayan Naidu

Part I

dil mere. . . ae ae ae re

dil mere. . . ae ae ae re. . .ae

tu akela tha tu akela hai
tu akela tha tu akela hai
tere liye to bas ik veeraana
tere liye to bas ik veeraana
ye bahaaron ka rangeen mela hai
tu akela tha
tu akela hai

wo phool hai tu jo kabhi na khile
wo phool hai tu jo kabhi na khile
wo diya hai tu jo kabhi na jale
us raat ka saaya hai tujh par
jo raat kahin bhi kabhi na dhaley
jo raat kahin bhi kabhi na dhaley
dil mere re
dil mere re
tu akela tha tu akela hai
tu akela tha
tu akela hai

hmmm hmmm hmmm

zulfon ki ghaneri chhaon kahan
zulfon ki ghaneri chhaon kahan
saawan ki haseen ghataaon mein
us pyar ke mehke aanchal ki
khushboo to nahin hai haawaon mein
khushboo to nahin hai haawaon mein
dil mere re
dil mere re
tu akela tha tu akela hai
tu akela tha
tu akela hai

Part II

hamraaz nahin hamdard nahin
hamraaz nahin hamdard nahin
hamraah teri sooni raahen
koi bhi nahin tera is duniya mein
jalte huye din pyaasi shaamen
jalte huye din pyaasi shaamen
dil mere re
dil mere re
tu akela tha tu akela hai
tu akela tha
tu akela hai

kya khoob tujhe taqdeer mili
kya khoob tujhe taqdeer mili
tanhaai ki jaageer mili
kya khwaab sajaaye the tu ne
kya khwaabon ki taabeer mili
kya khwaabon ki taabeer mili
dil mere re
dil mere re
tu akela tha tu akela hai
tu akela tha  tu akela hai
tere liye to bas ik veeraana
tere liye to bas ik veeraana
ye bahaaron ka rangeen mela hai
tu akela tha
tu akela hai

भाग I
