Hullo Atuldom

Anand Bakshi (21st July 1930-30th March 2002) whose birthname was Bakshi Anand Prakash Vaid, was a poet, first and foremost. Writing poetry was his hobby from a young age. He used to write occasionally, even after he joined the navy. He used his songs & lyrics in local programmes related to his troop. He worked for many years in the navy and simultaneously tried to market his songs in the Mumbai film world.

The first song, written by him, recorded for a film was in 1956, after which he kept getting work, but success came with “Mehendi Lagi Mere Haath” (1962) for which he had collaborated with Kalyanji Anandji. Subsequently, he worked with all the music directors of the Hindi film industry & listeners had a ‘dum maro dum’ with ‘dekho o deewano tum ye kaam na karo’ in the same movie. Lovers of HFM also had a ‘chal chal mere saathi’ & ‘nafrat ki duniya ko chhod ke’ in the same film. I am sure that any listener of Hindi film songs will have their own playlist of Anand Bakshi songs- hits & not so popular ones. His work spanned almost 46 years, with the last film with songs written by him releasing in 2008 (Mehbooba) for which Ismail Darbar was the music director.

I was looking up some interesting numbers that are available on the internet. I always thought that most of his work was with RD Burman, but the internet gives a different story – Anand Bakshi has been the lyricist for more of Laxmi- Pyare’s work.

He has worked with SD Burman & RD Burman, Chitragupt & Anand-Milind, Kalyanji-Anandji & Viju Shah, Roshan & Rajesh Roshan; that means a few fathers & sons have been comfortable working with this song writer or we can safely say that he knew the needs & demands of any generation. Interesting!!!

We have 1198 songs written by the lyricist on our blog. Today on his birth anniversary we shall have a song from the 1989 released “Tridev”. It was produced by Gulshan Rai, directed by Rajiv Rai and had music by Kalyanji Anandji. Sapna Mukherjee, Sadhana Sargam, Alka Yagnik, Amit Kumar, Manhar Udhas, Mohd. Aziz were the playback singers used. Naseeruddin Shah, Sonam, Sangeeta Bijlani, Jackie Shroff, Sunny Deol, Madhuri Dixit, Anupam Kher, Raza Murad, Tej Sapru, Dan Dhanoa, Dalip Tahil, Rajesh Vivek, Subbiraj, Sulabha Deshpande, Tom Alter, Ram Mohan and The Amrish Puri were the cast.

We have one song from “Tridev” on the blog which was posted last year for the 90th birthday of Amrish Puri. Today’s song is the one that appears along with the titles of the film & is in the voice of Naseeruddin Shah. The same also gets repeated as the film goes into the interval.

Incidentally, yesterday (20th July) Naseeruddin Shah turned 73. He has been active in films since 1975 beginning his journey with ‘Nishant’, ‘Manthan’, ‘Bhumika’, ‘Junoon’ etc. all of which were essentially art films. ‘Sunayana’, ‘Hum Paanch’, ‘Khwab’, ‘Tajurba’ etc. were his initial foray into mainstream/ commercial cinema. His filmography has a mix of commercial & art films through the ’80s and after that his films may have been classified as commercial films but they, mostly, had meaningful plots. There are out-and-out outlandish films too, “Tridev” being a case in point.
Wishing Naseeruddin Shah a (Belated) Happy Birthday & remembering Anand Bakshi.

Song-Paap se dharti phhati (Tridev)(1989) Voice-Naseeruddin Shah, Lyrics-Anand Bakshi, MD-Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

paap se dharti phati
adharm se aasmaan
atyaachar se kaanpi insaaniyat
raj kar rahe haiwaan

jinki hogi takat apoorv
jinka hoga nishaana abhed
jo karenge inka sarvnaash
wo kehlaayenge tridev

paap se dharti phati
adharm se aasmaan
atyaachar se kaanpi insaaniyat
raaj kar rahe haiwaan

jinki hogi taakat apoorv
jinka hoga nishaana abhed
jo karenge inka sarvnaash
wo kehlayenge tridev
