The Voice of Mukesh #75
– – – – – – – – – – – – –

One hundred years ago today. One of the most revered persona of Hindi film music was born in Delhi. Today, we are celebrating his centenary birth anniversary. More famous for his somber, sad and poignant renditions, he is known as the singer of melancholia. Once even he admitted in an interview, that his own preference is to sing songs of melancholy and sadness, rather than songs of light, comic or romantic mood. Of course romantic moods for him also meant ‘poignant’ for him. As is the song I am presenting in this post today.

At one point in his life, he had this zeal for and was enamored by being successful as a singer-actor. But that was not to be his destiny. Yes he has appeared in some films early in his career, and then during the first half of the decade of 1950s. one sees a real serious and dedicated effort to become a singing star. And this he did, to the detriment of his career as a playback singer, to the disappointment of many in the industry. This, despite the fact the in the mid to late 1940s, he had gained recognition, success and a standing as one of the top playback singers of that time.

The remaining part of the story is quite well known. Stepping back into the mold of the playback singer, by mid 1950s he re-initiated his participation in the industry as a playback singer only. But unfortunately, the industry and the playback singing within that, had moved on. Sadly he could not recover the ground that was lost. He was able to return into the fold and was able to make a place for himself once again in the top tier of the male playback singers’ coterie. However, it will forever remain one of the unanswered queries of life – what if? What if Mukesh had not squandered away 5 to 7 years of his life in an effort to become a singer-actor success story? One will never know.

I bring on board another wonderfully poignant and unheard song from his later years in the career. This song is once again, from an unreleased film from early 1970s. Thankfully, some recording was done and it survives.

The film is ‘Nirlajj’. It is listed in the Geet Kosh as one of the proposed but incomplete/unreleased film of the decade of 1970s. Almost no other information about this film has survived. The name of the banner is listed as MS Films. The names of the songwriter and music director have survived, as the recordings were thankfully published as EP and SP records under the label of Polydor. Two songs are identified. One is a solo by Lata ji, and the second is this tender and touching solo song by Mukesh. One more piece of information that is available in the Geet Kosh is the alternate name for this film, which is ‘Ek Raahi, Do Raaste’.

The song is an effort to comfort and convince the beloved, that one desires to love her to such a depth, that she may forget all the woes and tribulations of her own past. The words written by Naqsh Lyallpuri are very sensitive, very appropriate, and very touching. The words include the promises of love, the expectation that his love would be accepted by the beloved, and the request for her to open up and share the vagaries of her past.

Let’s listen to this sensitive lyrics, in the voice that has the true ability to give meaningful expression to these tender lines.

Song – Meri Aarzoo Hai Tumhen Itna Chaahoon  (Nirlajj) (UR) (1970s) Singer – Mukesh, Lyrics – Naqsh Lyallpuri, MD – Kalyanji Anandji

Lyrics

meri aarzoo hai tumhen itna chaahoon
meri aarzoo hai tumhen itna chaahoon
ke um beeti baaton ka gham bhool jaao
tumhen raas aa jaaye meri mohabbat
zamaane ke saare sitam bhool jaao
meri aarzoo hai tumhen itna chaahoon
meri aarzoo hai

meri aarzoo hai tumhen itna chaahoon
ke um beeti baaton ka gham bhool jaao
meri aarzoo hai

ye tanhaaiyaan zindagi chheen lengi
ye tanhaaiyaan zindagi chheen lengi
tumhen chain ki saans lene na dengi
wo yaadein jo har waqt dil ko jalaayen
wo yaadein sabhi e sanam bhool jao
meri aarzoo hai tumhen itna chaahoon
ke um beeti baaton ka gham bhool jaao
tumhen raas aa jaaye meri mohabbat
zamaane ke saare sitam bhool jaao
meri aarzoo hai tumhen itna chaahoon
meri aarzoo hai
