Kalpana Lajmi (31/05/1954 – 23/09/2018), the niece of Guru Dutt has been known to make feminist films. Having trained under Shyam Benegal in his early couple of films, she started her filmy career with making documentary films. ‘Ek Pal’ (1986) was her first feature film as a director in which she took the subject of extra-marital relationship. In Rudaali’ (1993), she brought up the issue of oppressions of lower caste females. In her third film, ‘Daman’ (2001), she portrayed a wife subject to domestic violence and the marital rape.
‘Daman’ (2001) was produced by National Film Development Corporation (NDFC) and was directed by Kalpana Lajmi. Raveena Tandon and Sayaji Shinde were in the lead roles, supported by Sanjay Suri, Raima Sen, Ishaan Barua, Girija Das, Ranjan Koshal, Kalpana Barua, Bharati Jaffrey, Nippon Goswami, Shaan etc. Since the film was majorly shot in Assam, some of the actors of Assamese films were given the supporting roles in the film.
The film’s story quite often goes into flashback. However, I am giving below the gist of the story in the sequential order:
The Saikia family consisting of Bishnu Saikia (Ishaan Barua), Mukut Saikia (Girija Das) and two unmarried sons, Sanjoy (Sayaji Shinde) and Sunil (Sanjay Suri). Sanjoy is short-tempered, alcoholic and womaniser. His parents decide to get him married to a lower caste girl, Durga (Raveena Tandon) from a poor family so that she can be subservient to him in facing his short temper nature and vices. However, Sanjoy refuses to get married on the day of his marriage. When his mother threatens to remove his name from the will which would deprive him of their estate, he relents and marries Durga.
On the very first night of the marriage, Sanjoy decides to spend the night with a prostitute named Chameli (Monalisa) and makes her pregnant. With this, Durga’s nightmare with Sanjoy begins. He not only mistreats her, but he also beats her almost every day. The only person who sympathises with her is Sunil. Even this act of him creates suspicion in the mind of Sanjoy that Sunil has illicit relationship with his wife. One day, a fully drunk Sanjoy forcibly has sex with Durga and gets her pregnant. He blames Sunil for her pregnancy. Durga gives birth to a daughter, Deepa (Raima Sen) much to Sanjoy’s disappointment, as he wanted a son.
When Deepa is in her teens, Sanjoy decides to get her married to an older man. His family tries to make him understand against this marriage but of no use. On the other hand, he severely beats Durga in front of the whole family. The arguments between Sanjoy and Sunil leads to a brawl during which Sunil is killed. Durga feels very insecure in the house and is afraid that her husband would get a free hand to get Deepa married to an old man. One day, Durga with her daughter run away from home and reach Guwahati where she finds a support from a woman to stay in her house. Sanjoy files a complaint with local police, alleging that Durga has abducted Deepa. His interest in finding Deepa is mainly because in the modified will, his father has bequeathed his estate to Deepa after his death.
Both Durga and Deepa spend their hassle-free 3 years in Guwahati until one day, a police inspector who is investigating the FIR lodged by Sanjoy about ‘kidnapping’ of Deepa by Durga, visits her and tells that Sanjoy has been seen in Guwahati. Durga is worried that Sanjoy would reach her to take the revenge. The police inspector knows the background under which Durga has runway from her home and is sympathetic towards her flight. So, he refrains from actively pursued the case.
As expected, one day Sanjoy visits Durga’s house and asks Deepa to sign on a document renunciation her right on the estate of his late father which she refuses. Sanjoy now plans to kill Deepa on the day of Gauri immersion. However, Durga sees a gun-wielding Sanjoy coming towards the immersion crowd. She picks the trishul from the idol of Gauri and kills Sanjoy in front of a large crowd.
I have watched this film in some portions in ‘fast forward’ mode as I found the domestic violence scenes very disturbing. Also, the film had a couple of sub-plots like love affairs of Raima Sen and Shaan with a song added to it which did not gel well with the main theme of the film. But whatever portions I have watched, I felt that somewhere in the film, director Kalpana Lajmi got wavered from her main theme of marital rape and abusive marriage to a general domestic violence in which all members of the Saikia family and their servants are affected. Sayaji Shinde’s character has been portrayed more of a psychopath than an abusive husband. Also, sometime his dialogue delivery with Marathi accent does not give a feel of a character from Assam.
The plus point of the film is the performance of Raveena Tandon in the role of a suffering wife. Earlier to this film, I had watched her equally good performance in ‘Satta’ (2003). It is good that she decided to be a part of the ‘middle of the road films’ for which she got more recognition as an actor than from mainstream Hindi films. She got the 48th National Film Award for the Best Actress for this film.
The film was a box office failure as per the Box Office India report. Kalpana Lazmi, in her interview which appeared in The Times of India, July 25, 2003, said that ‘Ek Pal’ (1986) was regarded as her thundering debut film and ‘Rudaali’ (1993) gave her fame in national and international film circuits. But all her gains were lost in ‘Daman’ (2001) when most of the film critics gave the negative reviews. It was one of her worst nightmares as she doubted her own capability as a film director. She felt at peace only when she started receiving letters of appreciation from the victims of marital rapes.
The film had 7 songs including one song in the second version which were written by Maya Govind. All the songs were set to music by Bhupen Hazarika. I am presenting the first song, ’hu hu paagal pawan chale’ from the film to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Ishaan Dutta and Kavita Krishnamurthy. The song is picturised on Raveena Tandon and Sanjay Suri.
The song is the reflections of the imaginations in the inner conscious of Raveena Tandon and Sanjay Suri (her brother-in-law in the film). He is sympathetic towards her for facing the wrath of his elder brother and her husband, Sayaji Shinde. He always gives her emotional support whenever any issue concerning her arises in the family. Raveena Tandon sees him as the only person in the joint family on whom she can rely upon. She shares her happy and sad moments of her life with him. One can call their relationship, a kind of the plutonic love.
The song is melodious with minimum use of musical instruments alternating between guitar and flute interludes and a mix of guitar and flute postlude. The tune and the orchestration can give a feel of a journey with the nature for the listeners.

Lyrics
hu hu paagal pawan chale
chaahe gagan se agan jhare
bijlee gire chaahe ghata ghire
saathhi tum mere sang rahna
hu hu paagal pawan chale…
mere jeewan ke saagar mein
tum maanjhi ban aaye
aas ke deep jalaaye
bhanwar miley chaahe saahil miley
saathhi tum mere sang rahna
hu hu paagal pawan chale…
mujhko apna kah do agar
to main tumhaara aanchal banoon
ek ishaara kar do agar
nainon ka tumhaare kaajal banoon
kaash youn hota to
panchhi ke pankh main leti chura
apne tan par leti saja
udte udte kahta jiya
saathhi tum mere sang rahna
hu hu paagal pawan chale
chaahe gagan se agan jhare
bijlee gire chaahe ghata ghire
saathhi tum mere sang rahna
hu hu paagal pawan chale
bachpan ke din nikal gaye
chanchal nazaare sab badal gaye
yauwan jwaar jab badhne laga
hamen teri baahon ke sahaare miley
jeewan ke kaaghaz par
tumne apna naam likha
khushiyon ka paighaam likha
bol rahi hai disha disha
saathhi tum mere sang rahna
hu hu paagal pawan chale
chaahe gagan se agan jhare
bijlee gire chaahe ghata ghire
saathhi tum mere sang rahna
hu hu paagal pawan chale
