‘Saaz aur Sanam’ (1971) was the last feature film under the Wadia Movietone banner. It was also the last film for J B H Wadia as a director. The film’s shooting started in 1970 with then newcomers, Pramendra and Rekha in the lead. The other cast in the film included Suresh Chatwal, Poornima, Sapru, Ratan Kumar, Bhramachari, Master Bhagwan, Asit Sen and Arvind (debut). Rajni Bala made a guest appearance. The film was partly shot in Goa just a few years after India took over the territory from Portugal. It is said that J.B.H. Wadia had promised a teenager Rekha that he would introduced her in Hindi films. He kept his promise with this film. However, Rekha signed her the first Hindi film, ‘Saawan Bhaadon’ (1970).

The film is not available for viewing on any video sharing platforms. From the synopsis available online, the film appears to be an usual mainstream Hindi film with a package containing the mix of romance, music, villain, gangster, fights, thrill, suspense with happy ending.

I had heard the name of the lead actor, Pramendra in ‘Holi Aayi Re’ (1971). His face partly resembled that of Manoj Kumar and his style of standing and walking reminded me of Dharmendra. He is, however, taller than Manoj Kumar and Dharmendra. I have recently watched his another, film, ‘Duniya Kya Jaane’ (1971) and noted that his acting calibre matches with that of the early acting of Manoj Kumar and Dharmendra. I had thought that like Dharmendra, Pramendra may be from Punjab.

The story of Pramendra as bought out by Shishir Krishna Sharma in his Blog, Beete Hue Din makes an interesting reading. Based on this, I have attempted to present a brief profile of Pramendra:

Pramendra (02/12/1942 – 07/10/2020) whose real name was Trilokinath Parashar was born in Agra in a landlord family who had big parcel of land in Fatehpur Sikri. After completion of Matriculation, Parmendra was pursuing higher studies with the intention of becoming a doctor. However, after watching the shooting of Dilip Kumar for ‘Leader’ (1964) in Fatehpur Sikri, he decided to become an actor. He took admission in FTII, Pune. Before his completion of the course, he was selected by Prakash Pictures for their film’ Holi Aayi Re’ (1971). He did ‘Deedar’ (1970), Jogi’ (1971, released in 1982), ‘Duniya Kya Jaane’ (1971), and ‘Saaz Aur Sanam’ (1971).

However, about a dozen films signed by him remained incomplete or shelved. This created a feeling of insecurity in him. Also, he did not wish to act in the films in supporting roles. So, he bid a goodbye to Hindi film industry and started a business of interior decorators in Mumbai. His business was flourishing. All the 5-star hotels in Mumbai were his clients. However, after the 1993 bomb blast, his business graph went downward. At that time, his aged father called him to Fatehpur Sikri to look after the family’s vast property. He remained in Fatehpur Sikri until he passed away on October 7, 2020, at the age of 78.

Rajni Bala made a guest appearance as a dancer in the film. I had heard her name for the first time in Ramanand Sagar’s TV serial, ‘Ramayan’ (1987) in which she performed the role of Sumitra. She had worked in Hindi, Gujarati and Punjabi films as a dancer and in supporting roles since early 1970.

Not much information is available online as to how Rajni Bala landed in Hindi film industry. A Gujarati video clip available online mentions that Rajni Bala’s family belonged to Amritsar who settled in Jamnagar. Rajni Bala was born in Jamnagar and spent her childhood there. She debuted as a dancer in Basant Pictures’ and Wadia Brothers’, ‘Saat Sawaal Yaani Hatimtai’ (1970). Her second film, ‘Saaz Aur Sanam’ (1971) was again with Wadias as a dancer. In all, Rajni Bala has acted in about 65 Hindi film as a dancer and in supporting roles.

Because of her fluency in Gujarati language and also in Kathiawadi dialect, Rajni Bala was a prominent actor in Gujarati films. Like Mehmood and Subha Khote pair, Rajni Bala paired with Gujarati film comedian, Ramesh Mehta in many Gujarati films. Apart from Ramayan TV serial, she worked in TV serials, ‘Vikram Aur Betaal’ (1986) and ‘Love Kush’ (1988).

Rajni Bala passed away on December 2, 2010, due to brain hemorrhage at the age of 57 in Mumbai.

‘Saaz Aur Sanam’ (1971) had 5 songs written by Kaifi Azmi and set to music by Chitragupt. 3 songs from the film have already been covered on the Blog. I am presenting the 4th song, ‘ye dil jigar jafaa w afaa hai sab kuchh fasaana’ which is rendered by Lata Mangeshkar. It is a dance song picturised on Rajni Bala. Paramendra is also present.

Song-Ye dil jigar jafaa wafaa (Saaz Aur Sanam)(1971) Singer-Lata, Lyrics-Kaifi Azmi, MD-Chitragupta

Lyrics (based on video clip):

ye dil jigar jafaa wafaa
hai sab kuchh fasaana
ye dil jigar jafaa wafaa
hai sab kuchh fasaana
aankhen milaa le
thokar mein saara zamaana
ye dil jigar jafaa wafaa
hai sab kuchh fasaana
aankhen milaa le
thokar mein saara zamaana

aaya hai koi
nigaahon mein meri
shamaaya hai koi ajnabi ee ee
aaya hai koi
nigaahon mein meri
shamaaya hai koi ajnabi ee
hum bhi hain yahaan
begaane bhi yahaan
bujhaane na koi raushni
chhupo
bacho
chhupo zara
bacho zara
hai qaatil nishaana
aankhen mila le
thokar mein saara zamaana
ye dil jigar jafaa wafaa
hai sab kuchh fasaana
aankhen mila le
thokar mein saara zamaana

honthon ki kali
gulaabon mein dhali
bahaaron mein pali har adaa aa
honthon ki kali
gulaabon mein dhali
bahaaron mein pali har adaa…
gora sa badan
jawaani kaa chaman
nigaahon mein nasha pyaar ka
jhuki
nazar
jhuki
nazar
haseen ada
bana de deewaana
aankhen mila le
thokar mein saara zamaana
ye dil jigar jafaa wafaa
hai sab kuchh fasaana
aankhen mila le
thokar mein saara zamaana
