7th of July was the 8th death anniversary of Om Prakash Sonik, the second person in the two member mama-bhanja composer jodi, Sonik Omi.

Om Prakash, or Omi was born in Sialkot in 1939. his father was a real estate dealer and mother was a housewife. After the partition, the family moved to Delhi to live with his uncle Manohar Lal Sonik, who used to work in a ‘Musical Orchestra”. Manohar Lal was blind.

After some time, Manohar Lal shifted to Bombay and began assisting composer Pandit Amarnath. Om Prakash also moved to Bombay in 1947 at the age of eight. He began as a chorus singer and then started assisting music director Roshan before branching off as a music director and joined his uncle to form a composer team – Sonik Omi.

The Sonik Omi composer team debuted with Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya in 1966. The film was a super hit and the songs remain on the lips of people, to this day. However, the first film’s success didn’t translate into any good offers and they refused to accept the mediocre offers which came their way.

Then in 1968, they signed Aabroo. Later, they received a few more projects such as Mahua and Saawan Bhadon. The songs did fairly well but they still did not get the success that was due to them.

Financial hardship followed and they started accepting whatever came their way, specially low budget films like Bindiya Aur Bandook, Do Chattane, Dharma etc, due to which they got stamped as composers of B Grade films.

In over two decades as composers, they gave music to over 70 films. A few of their gems include the title song of Dil Ne Phir Yaad Kiya (1966), “Aap Se Pyar Hua” (“Aabroo”, 1968), “Dono Ne Kiya Tha Pyar Magar” (“Mahua”, 1969), “Kaan Mein Jhumka” (“Sawan Bhadon”, 1970), “Yaad Rahega Pyar Ka” (“Umar Qaid”, 1975) and “Sansar Hai Ek Nadiya” (“Raftaar”, 1975).

Today’s song is from the movie “Umar Qaid” (1975) which was directed by Sikander Khanna for producer C K Sobti’s Gautam Pictures. It was cleared by the Censor Board on the 10th of June 1975. The movie starred Sunil Dutt, Reena Roy, Vinod Mehra, Moushmi Chatterjee, Asrani, Om Shiv Puri, Kader Khan, Anju Mahendroo, Krishan Dhawan and Jeetendra in Dynamic Appearance.

This song “Yoon Na Dekh Mujhe” is sung by Asha Bhosle, penned by Gulshan Bawra and composed by Sonik Omi. This song was not picturised and deleted from the movie.

Lyrics

Yoon Na Dekh Mujhe
Dekh Na O Harjaai
Yoon Na Dekh Mujhe
Dekh Na O Harjaai
Har Aankh Yeh
Mujhse Kahe
Main Hoon Teri Saudaayi
Yoon Na Dekh Mujhe
Dekh Na O Harjaai
Har Aankh Yeh
Mujhse Kahe
Main Hoon Teri Saudaayi
Yoon Na Dekh Mujhe
Ummmm

Yeh Paighaam Nigaahon Ke To
Aksar Milte Rehte Hain
Yeh Paighaam Nigaahon Ke To
Aksar Milte Rehte Hain
Aankhon Ke Rishte Sun Pagle
Bante Bante Bante Hain
La La Luckilyla la
Toone
Toone Jhooti Aas Lagaayi
haha
Yoon Na Dekh Mujhe
Dekh Na O Harjaai
Yoon Na Dekh Mujhe
Dekh Na O Harjaai
Har Aankh Yeh
Mujhse Kahe
Main Hoon Teri Saudaayi
Yoon Na Dekh Mujhe
Ummmm

Pyaar Ka Koi Mol Nahin Hai
Lekin Duniya Kya Jaane
Pyaar Ka Koi Mol Nahin Hai
Lekin Duniya Kya Jaane
Dil Ka Yeh Sauda Dil Se Hoga
Jaan Le Itna Deewaane
Yara Loo
Lala
Aisey
Aisey Ho Jaayegi Ruswaayi
haha
Yoon Na Dekh Mujhe
Dekh Na O Harjaaai
Yoon Na Dekh Mujhe
Dekh Na O Harjaai
Har Aankh Yeh
Mujhse Kahe
Main Hoon Teri Saudaayi
Yoon Na Dekh Mujhe

This song was re-used in the film, ‘Faqeer Baadshah’ (1987).
