(12th Remembrance Anniversary Day of Rajesh Khanna – 18th July’2024)

Today 18th July 2024 is the ‘Twelfth remembrance’ anniversary of Rajesh Khanna. He was born on 29th December’1942 and he passed away on 18th July’2012.

On this occasion, as a tribute to him, here is a song from the movie ‘Aanchal-1980’. Regulars on this blog must have noticed that majority of the Rajesh Khanna songs from his earlier movies (1967-1976) were covered on this blog in the initial years of this blog. These song-posts then were read with much interest and some regular commentators would post their comments on these posts with passion. And why not, some of them were big fans of Rajesh Khanna. Among these regulars used to be one of our senior team-members Raja Saab. He also wrote many heartfelt posts on Rajesh Khanna on this blog. In recent years he has taken a break from writing on the blog, and I hope that and wish that he will make a comeback in future on the blog.

Raja Saab had presented a song from the movie ‘Aanchal-1980’ on 18.07.2018. One more song from this movie was presented by me on 27.06.2022. Today I am presenting the third song from this movie on this blog.

‘Aanchal-1980’ was directed by Anil Ganguly for ‘Bemisal Films Pvt Ltd’. It was produced by Prem Lalwani and Mohan Lalwani. This movie had Rajesh Khanna, Rakhee Gulzar, Rekha, Prem Chopra, and Amol Palekar, with Leela Mishra, Shammi, Dinesh Hingoo, Ranjana Sachdev, Birbal, Sarita Devi, Asit Sen, Swapan Guha, Amol Sen, Deepak, Master Ravi, Lekha Chauhan, Master Sandeep, Suresh Desai, Saukat Bharti, Jankidas, Rajkishore, Viju Khote, and others. Abhi Bhattacharya had a friendly appearance in this movie. Story of this movie was written by Tara Shankar Bandopadhya, and dialogues were written by Ehsan Rizvi. Screenplay of this movie was written by Sachin Bhowmick. Editing of this movie was done by Waman Bhonsle and Gurudutt Shirali.

This movie had six songs. They are penned by Majrooh Sultanpuri and music is composed by R.D. Burman. Lata Mangeshkar, Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhonsle, and Swapan Chakravarty had given their voices to the songs in this movie.

While presenting the first song from this movie (‘paise ka kaajal daike na lo hamri jaan’) on the blog on 18.07.2018 Raja Saab had mentioned the plot of this movie in brief, which I am reproducing here below.

“The film stars Kaka, Rekha, Raakhee, Amol Palekar and Prem Chopra. It’s a village-based story, where Kaka and Amol Palekar are brothers, with Raakhee married to Amol Palekar. Since Kaka is her husband’s younger brother, Raakhee treats him with great affection. Kaka too has highest regard for his Bhabhi. Prem Chopra, who has a score to settle with Amol Palekar, plays mischief, creating misunderstanding in his mind about the relationship between Raakhee and Kaka. Also, doing the same to Rekha, who is in love with Kaka.”

What happens next is what we have to watch this movie for. In my case I am yet to watch this movie.

Coming back to the song under discussion, it is a ‘romantic’ duet song sung by Kishore Kumar and Lata Mangeshkar. Rajesh Khanna and Rekha lip-sync the song on screen.

(One can notice that all the ‘antaraas’ of this song starts with its ‘mukhdaa’ i.e. ‘bas meri jaan bas’ … I don’t know if it is something ‘special’ to mention or not?. May be knowledgeable readers will be able to throw more light on this aspect of this composition).

Let us listen to and enjoy this song and watch Kaka in his characteristic ‘romantic’ avtaar in this song …
