Today 18 july 2024 is the remembrance day of Rajesh Khanna. I know (thanks to media coverage) that he passed away on this date, but it still comes as a huge surprise to me to realise that 12 years have gone by since that date. How time flies. It seems like yesterday when I was listening to Binaca geetmala final on the last wednesday of 1971, when almost every song that got played was picturised on Rajesh Khanna, including the number one song. Then I realise that 1971 was 53 years ago. More than half a century ago. The world has changed considerably from those days.
Rajesh Khanna, who was seemingly invincible in 1971 found his empire slipping away because he could not handle his sudden superstardom. He found his crown usurped by a more professional actor who handled his superstardom with more grace and dignity.
Rajesh Khanna tried to make a comeback. After several failures, his comeback movies began to succeed at the box office, but that was not enough for him to regain his superstar status back. His prince charming days were behind him.
We have been covering lots of Rajesh Khanna songs in the blog during his birth and death anniversaries. When I looked up, I found that the blog has as many as 265 songs featuring Rajesh Khanna. As many as 150 of these songs are sung by Kishore Kumar, but Kishore Kumar is not the only playback singer for him. As many as 15 singers have given playback for Rajesh Khanna. They include three music directors and one lyricist as well ! At this rate a day may come when we will run out of Rajesh Khanna songs to cover in the blog, just as we have run out of K L Saigal songs to cover in the blog.
That situation has not yer arrived today, but that day may not be far off. When I tried to look for a song picturised on Rajesh Khanna and lip synced by him, I could find one such song, but noting down the lyrics of that lengthy song was a bit of hassle at this point, so I looked for other songs. I realised that a few songs of “Sautan”(1983) are yet to be covered. On checking up, I find that all the songs lip synced by Rajesh Khanna in this movie are already posted in the blog. So I have picked up a song where Rajesh Khanna does not lip sync the song, but he is very much present. The song is a get together song. It is sung by Asha Bhonsle and lip synced by Tina Munim. The song is addressed to Rajesh Khanna and he is described as “bewafa” in this song, which is indeed the case in the movie.
Sawan Kumar Tak is the lyricist. Music is composed by Usha Khanna.
Back in 1983, I considered the songs of this movie to be low in class. But with time, I have grudgingly started to concede that the songs of this movie are hummable, even if not of very high quality. The fact that these songs are still being listened to after more than 40 years suggest that they have passed the test of time.
Here is this song as a tribute to Rajesh Khanna on the occasion of his remembrance day.
