Hullo Atuldom
‘Phir Janam Lenge Hum’ (‘PJLH’ – 1977)} was the directorial debut of Mehul Kumar, who later went on to make films like ‘Tiranga’, ‘Krantiveer’, ‘Kohram’, ‘Mrityudaata’ etc. in the 1990s. (He may have made more, but I am aware of these).
Mehul Kumar, who was born as Mohammed Ibrahim Baloch on 1st July 1948, made ‘PJLH’ as a bilingual – in Hindi & Gujarati. It had a cast of Adil Amaan, Bhavana Bhatt, Ramesh Deo, Iftikhar, Roopesh Kumar, Jagdeep, Gayatri, Murad, Amjad Khan (found this from the titles of the movie, saw it as I wrote the post), Ashoo, Madhup Sharma etc. Bappi Lahiri was the music director and Gauhar Kanpuri was the lyricist. Mohd Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Lata Mangeshkar, Anuradha Paudwal, Aarti Mukherjee, Manna Dey, Preeti Sagar, Usha Mangeshkar were the playback singers used. I have no idea about the story of the film, maybe ages ago I may have caught a few scenes of it when Doordarshan telecast it in the late 1980s, but have zero- recall of anything other than the two songs that the blog has.
Another recall is that Adil Amaan made his Hindi film debut in ‘Yehi Hai Zindagi’ in 1977. Plus, he acted as Mumtaz’s brother in ‘Aaina’ (1974). Currently he is teaching acting in FTII in Pune. (according to what I read on the internet). Bhavana Bhatt was someone who made her debut in ‘Do Jasoos’ (1975), did a few films in Hindi before going on to act in Punjabi films.
I took a break from writing this post to run through the film. This is the story as I understood in the fast-forward mode:-
The movie is the love story of a not-so-poor orphan who falls in love with the daughter of the village zamindar. The girl has a stepmother who has only one aim – to speak ill of the girl, and marry her off at the first opportunity. The orphan has his benefactor’s daughter also who has feelings for him.
I stopped seeing the film when I reached the song I was seeking. Actually, I first heard that song on YouTube when I was looking for hitherto unheard songs of the legend Mohd Rafi. This song reminds me of the song from film ‘Caravan (1971) – Arrey Ho, Goriya Kahaan Tera Des Re. I think the opening beat is what gave me the feeling.
Today, on the occasion of the 44th death anniversary of the singing legend Mohd Rafi, here is a duet with Usha Mangeshkar. It is filmed on the Adil Amaan and Bhavana Bhatt, on the banks of river where he wins a race at the start of the film and later saves the heroine from drowning etc.
This is my way of remembering a singer who didn’t shy from singing any type of song which would be filmed of actors of varied acting abilities. There have been songs for every occasion, every emotion, every genre.
I don’t know what to write about the legend that has not been already said on the numerous write ups about him.
So I shall just say Rafisaab we miss you.
