Jackie Shroff made his debut as a leading man in 1983 through the Subhash Ghai directed “Hero”. Following its success he was signed up for ‘Teri Meherbaniyan’, ‘Yudh’, ‘Karma’, ‘Shiva ka Insaaf ‘ etc. Of these, ‘Shiva Ka Insaaf’ that released in 1985 was advertised as India’s first 3-D movie. Additionally, it had the hero donning a cape ‘a la Zorro’. As far as story was concerned (as I can recall) it was as follows:-
“Bhola’s (Jackie Shroff) parents get killed by Jagan (Shakti Kapoor). He is then raised by 3 strong men named Ram (Vinod Mehra), Rahim (Mazhar Khan) and Robert (Parikshit Sahni). They groom Bhola with various physical training and he becomes powerful ‘Shiva’. He leaves his village and goes to the city to work as a journalist, where he meets Nisha (Poonam Dhillon). There he lives the life of Bhola. Nisha finds his reality, they fall in love with each other. At the end, he kills Jagan, who killed his parents as well as his son Vikram (Gulshan Grover).”
What does the story remind us of? ‘Superman’? Or any regular revenge drama that Indian films are full of. But then ‘Shiva’ in his cape reminds the viewer of Zorro.
The fate of ‘Shiva Ka Insaaf ‘at the box office- I don’t know. What I do know is it had music by RD Burman and Gulshan Bawra was the lyricist. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar, Mohd Aziz, Nandu Bhende and Suresh Wadkar were the playback singers for the five songs. This was a film that was produced by Romu N Sippy and directed by Raj N Sippy.
August 7th is the 15th death anniversary of lyricist Gulshan Bawra (he passed away in 2009) who was born Gulshan Kumar Mehta in undivided India. He graduated from Delhi University. He had his break in Hindi movies through ‘Chandrasen’ in 1959 with Kalyanji Veerji Shah as music director. From then on his songs were heard regularly till 1999 when the Akshay Kumar -Twinkle Khanna starrer ‘Zulmi’ released.
August 7th is the 69th birthday of ace singer Suresh Wadkar. He has been on the scene of Hindi Film music since 1976-1977. He was a winner of the Sur-Singer competition in 1976 where Jaidev & Ravindra Jain were the judges. His first Hindi FIM songs were in ‘Paheli’ and ‘Gaman’.
Today’s song is written by Gulshan Bawra and is in the voices of Suresh Wadkar who is accompanied by Mohd Aziz & Nandu Bhende. It is the song that shows the training of Bhola by Ram, Rahim & Robert. It has the little ‘Bhola’ growing into an adult.
