Hullo Atuldom

Just like my previous post, here is a look at the posts on the blog on This Date That Year (viz on 9 December 2013):-

Song Movie (Year) Remarks
Gori tere liye sabka jiya doley Shamsheer (1953) post by Arukumarji. Oonly one song till now from this movie
Ik baat suni hai chaachaa jee batlaane waali hai Naram Garam (1981) my post. three out of six songs have been posted so far

That means, on that day, there were only two posts, which were posted after 8 p.m. Must have been a really long and busy day for Atulji. Because, if I remember correctly, those days, Atulji used to make his first post almost at the break of dawn; he still does that.

The song that I had posted was for wishing the Tall & Handsome (in his own unique way) Shatrughan Sinha on his birthday, which was listed on various sites (at that time) as 9th December. Last year, i.e. 2022, I came across some sites giving the date of birth as 16th July 1946. But then, there were some videos posted on YouTube, in December 2022, showing the birthday celebrations of this hugely popular celebrity, actor, producer, who went on to become a Member of the Indian Parliament first as a Rajya Sabha member & later he also became a Lok Sabha member after he contested & won the elections. I found HMV /SaReGaMa’s Youtube channel has released a list of popular Shatrughan Sinha songs today also.

I am writing this post based on the listings on our blogs’ ANNIVERSARY DATES Page.

He was born in Patna as Shatrughan Prasad Sinha as the fourth son of a Doctor father and homemaker mother. After graduation from Patna & a diploma from FTII he landed in Bombay with dreams of being an actor. He was first seen in ‘Sajan’ (1969) though he signed Dev Anand’s ‘Prem Pujari’ first. ‘Prem Pujari’ was his first release of 1970, a year that also saw him in ‘Chetna’, ‘Ek nanhi Munni Ladki Thi’, ‘Khilona’, ‘Raaton Ka Raja’, ‘Holi Aayi Re’ etc. In the next few years we saw him play characters with grey shades & he was appreciated. He even got to sing a few songs to the heroine or with the main hero- remember ‘sharbati teri aankhon ki’ in ‘Blackmail’, ‘pyar ka samay kam hai jahan’ in ‘Rampur Ka Laxman’ to just list a few. His first big hit came in 1976 when he played “Kalicharan” in Subhash Ghai’s film of the same name. He is one of the actors of mainstream Indian cinema who held his own ground in the late 1970s & the 1980s when Amitabh Bachchan was the reigning star. He had many solo-hero-hits in that period, i.e. after ‘Kalicharan’.

I really don’t know which was the first movie, of this actor, that I appreciated. But I know for sure that I liked him in Dulal Guha’s ‘Dost’ (1974) as a petty thief & expert lock breaker who is reformed by Dharmendra. Particularly in the climax scene, where he opens a huge wall-safe with one hand, as halfway through the movie his right hand gets amputated. Before ‘Dost’ Shatrughan Sinha had played Dharmendra’s friend in ‘Blackmail’ who helps him in getting married & then tries to get the wife to cheat on her husband.

We normally speak of actors successful pairing with their heroines. Then some actors act in multi-hero films which are super successful. We can think of movies with Amitabh Bachchan- Shashi Kapoor, Vinod Khanna- Dharmendra, Jeetendra- Rajesh Khanna, Amitabh Bachchan- Shatrughan Sinha in this category. But when I ran through Shatrughan Sinha’s films and I found the following list of films where he was a hero along with Dharmendra.

S No Movie (Year)
1 ‘Blackmail’ (1973)
2 ‘Jheel ke Us Paar’ (1973)
3 Dost (1974)
4 Kehtey hai Mujhko Raja (1974)
5 Santo Banto (Punjabi) (1976)
6 Dillagi (1978)
7 Putt Jattan De (Punjabi) (1983)
8 Teesri Aankh (1982)
9 Qayamat (1983)
10 Jeene nahi Doonga (1984)
11 Insaniyat ke Dushman (1987)
12 Loha (1987)
13 Aag Hi Aag (1987)
14 Zalzala (1988)
15 Mahaveera (1988)
16 Ganga Tere Desh Mein (1988)
17 Shehzaade (1989)
18 Hum se na Takrana (1990)
19 Taaqat (1995)
20 Zulm-o-Sitam (1998)
21 Yamla Pagla Deewana: phir se (2018)

That list has 21 films where the two heroes have screen time together. I have not added Manmohan Desai’s ‘Naseeb’ in there as the actors don’t share screen time. I have also not added the 1969 released Pyar Hi Pyar in which Shatrughan Sinha is supposed to have faced the camera. I really enjoyed seeing Dharmendra & Shatrughan Sinha in ‘Yamla Pagla Deewna: Phir se’ specially in the court room scene. The love that the two actors have for each other is evident in every shot. They also try & dance in the song that plays with the end credits.

“Loha” which released in 1987 was a multi starrer which was produced by Salim Akhtar, & directed by Raj N. Sippy. The dialogues for the film were by Kadar Khan. Music directors were Laxmi-Pyare & Farooq Qaisar was the lyricist. Anuradha Paudwal, Kavitha Krishnamurthy, Alka Yagnk, Shabbir Kumar, Shailendra Sing, Suresh Wadkar & Mohd Aziz were the playback singers used.

There were three heroes- Dharmendra, Shatrughan Sinha, Kunal Kapoor (Shashi Kapoor’s son); two heroines- Mandakini, Madhavi & three BADMEN (villains)- Amrish Puri, Kadar Khan, Raza Murad; with a few known faces as henchmen-Tej Sapru, Macmohan, Roopesh Kumar, Goga Kapoor, Sudhir, Bhushan Tiwari. Jagdish Raj, Anjan Shrivastav, Yunus Parvez, Joginder, Vikas Anand, Ram Mohan, etc were the other male character artists. This is a film which is repeatedly aired on one-or-other satellite channels but I am yet to see it. If & when I see it I shall find out if there were any female character artist as well as any dancing queens like Helen, Bindu, Jayshree T., Leena Das, etc etc etc.; such a movie generally has one of these as there are so many BADMEN that there is every chance of a cabaret, mujra or item number. Need to see the film to know this.

The song with this post has Shatrughan opening in Suresh Wadkar’s voice, Karan Kapoor joins in Shailendra Singh’s voice. The song is almost like a debate about ‘paisa bada ya bhagwan bada’; Dharmendra begins with the stand that ‘bhagwan paise se bada’ in Mohd Aziz’s voice. There is lead lady dancer in a Maharashtrian saree who I cannot identify.

With this post we also wish our Dharam Paaji a.k.a. Garam Dharam (as he used to be addressed once upon a time) a very Happy Birthday (even if a day late). He turned 88 yesterday (8 December). These days he is a contented grandfather who is occasionally seen on reality shows as special guest along with ladies who had once played his heroines. He also acts & his last release was a film called “Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani” where Jaya Bachchan played his family & Shabana Azmi played his ‘samdhan’. That is a film on my wishlist for the sake of the old-timers.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to the Two Heroes who are charmers.

seth ko darr hai income tax ka
chain se soye gangaadeen

o paisa gora hai ya kaala
koi nahin ye poochhne waala
master chaabi paisa hi hai
khol raha hai sabka taala

o paise waali hai to kaali bhi lage hai gori
sone chaandi mein to budhhiya bhi lage hai chhori
chhori
paisa ho to
arey paisa ho to kaani ka bhi lag jaata hai teer

rupaiya peer na paisa peer
sabse bada hai eesa peer

arre eesa peer na moosa peer
sabse bada hai paisa peer

paisa naach nachaata hai
paisa geet sunaata hai
paackit mein gar dekh le paisa
chaand zameen par aata hai

saare kadke ullu hain

budhhiman bhi buddhu hain

paise ki hai izzat warna
laala ji bhi lallu hain
doston paise ko ek zuroorat jaano
is’se badh jaaye to hoti hai museebat maano
saadhu pe bhi kar de jaadu
paise mein hai wo taaseer

rupaiya peer na paisa peer
sabse bada hai eesa peer
sabse bada hai eesa peer
sabse bada hai moosa peer

eesa peer na moosa peer

Hullo Atuldom

‘Sindoor’ (1987) was a movie produced by A Krishnamurti & directed by K Ravi Shankar. The movie starred Shashi Kapoor, Jaya Prada, Govinda, Neelam, Kadar Khan, Shakti Kapoor, Gulshan Grover, Aruna Irani, Asrani, Baby Guddu (the pet child actor of those times), AK Hangal, Prem Chopra (if my memory is correct Prem Chopra was in a double role), & Ramesh Deo. Jeetendra & Rishi Kapoor had guest & special appearance respectively. Songs were written by Anand Bakshi & tuned by Laxmi-Pyaare.

This lyricist-music director team gave us some great songs in that period. Today’s song is no less a melody. It was very popular in its time, heard often on Doordarshan (Chhaayageet etc.) & Vividh Bharati. The song had two versions, both were on-stage performances. One version had Shashi Kapoor & Neelam while the other was a duet between Rishi Kapoor & Jaya Prada. The common link between the 2 versions were Lata Mangeshkar and most of the lyrics. The male singers used for the two heroes were Suresh Wadkar & Mohammad Aziz.

Rishi Kapoor (Kumar) played a stage artist who had Jaya Prada (Laxmi) as his singing partner. Shashi Kapoor (Vijay) who played a professor who always had doubts about being worthy of his beautiful wife Laxmi in spite of being happily married. He had a feeling that Kumar & Laxmi shared more than their love for music. The gossip among fans of the music duo hardly helps matters. Things get out of hand & eventually, Laxmi leaves her home. On the same day, Vijay comes to know that Kumar is marrying someone else when he comes to invite Laxmi & Vijay.

The film had a few flashbacks – one showed the story of Laxmi, Vijay & Kumar and the other showed how Laxmi came to wear the white saree denoting that she was a widow. I think that there was one more flashback which showed why Lalita (Neelam) is kidnapped by Shera (Shakti Kapoor) when she was a baby & Prem Kapoor (Jeetendra) requesting Laxmi to take care of Lalita as her own child.

Then the film goes through a lot of scenes where the characters use glycerine at times when there are misunderstandings (there are many in the film), lot of sermons delivered by Kader Khan and a little dishoom-dishoom (what is a Hindi movie without dishoom-dishoom specially when Govinda & Shakti Kapoor are in the cast 🙂 ) The film comes to a close with Laxmi & Vijay getting back together. Vijay accepts Lalita as a daughter, and Ravi (Govinda) & Lalita get married with parental blessings from Laxmi and Vijay. And there are smiles all around.

Jaya Prada’s first hero in Hindi films was Rishi Kapoor, this was their second film which was followed by ‘Ghar Ghar Ki Kahani’ in 1988. This was the only film which had Shashi Kapoor sharing screen space with Jaya Prada.

Incidentally, today is Rishi Kapoor’s birth anniversary. He would have turned 71. And yesterday was Pyaarelal Ramprasad Sharma’s 83rd birthday. I hope I don’t need to say that Pyaarelal Ramprasad Sharma is Pyaarelal of the Laxmi-Pyaare duo.

Wishing Pyaarelal ji a (belated) happy birthday and remembering our cute Kapoor ‘Chintu’ a.k.a Rishi Kapoor.

Hullo Atuldom

“Awaargi” (1990) was directed by Mahesh Bhatt, story-screenplay-dialogues were written by Suraj Sanim, and produced by P. Raghunath (who happened to be Hema Malini’s uncle). The movie opens with a message ‘Thanking Hema Malini’. Anu Malik was the music composer with Anand Bakshi writing most of its songs. Playback singers used were Asha Bhonsle, Mohd. Aziz, Lata Mangeshkar, Anuradha Paudwal; the Ghazal Maestro Ghulam Ali sang the melodious “Chamkate Chaand Ko Toota Hua Taara Banaa Dalaa” which was was written by Asad Bhopali. (Recently I saw this, sung by a youngster, on satellite TV, and I was hooked on to it and the songs of the movie itself).

Meenakshi Sheshadri-Anil Kapoor-Govinda formed the main lead and Anupam Kher headed the supporting cast of Satish Kaushik, Paresh Rawal, Avtar Gill, Mahesh Anand, Deepak Qazir, Ghanshyam etc. This was a movie that was long in the making and finally released 4 years after it was announced. This was one of the two movies that had Anil Kapoor & Govinda in the lead; the other being “Deewaana Mastaana”; both were love triangles but completely different from each other.
“Awaargi” was the story of Azaad (Anil Kapoor) rescuing a girl – Meena (Meenakshi)- from a brothel and how he helps her attain her dream of becoming a singer. For this he introduces her to a hotel owner (Deepak Qazir). Here she is spotted by a stage singer -Dhiren (Govinda)- who offers her a place in his troop and thus begins her journey to reach her dreams. Then, of course, there is the usual of Azaad falling in love with her and not being able to express it when he feels that Meena is in love with Dhiren. In between the confusion among the lovers there is also the ‘tadka’ of some gang lords – Paresh Rawal & Anupam Kher- wanting Meena back in the brothel.

I have seen this movie a decade back and don’t recall how it ends; but I am sure one of the guys would have given up his love for the lady; or (just maybe) the lady would have decided who she wanted in her life. This was a movie where Govinda and Anil Kapoor played serious characters with Anil Kapoor’s Azaad being the ‘Tapori’ that he was adept at playing back then.

Today we are having the song with which Meena makes her stage debut with Dhirens’ help. It is in the voices of Lata Mangeshkar and Mohd Aziz. It shows the two dancers in tandem to movements set by Saroj Khan.

With this post we are wishing the actor/dancer/singer/comedian Govinda who also tried his hand at being a Parliamentarian for a term as an elected member of the Lower House (Lok Sabha). He has taken a step closer to being 60.

Rafi Sahab’s Legendary Associations – 6
———————————–————––—

Remembering Mohammed Rafi Sahab on his 41st remembrance day :

Writing a post of a song by Mohammed Rafi Sahab is almost a second nature thing for me. I have not counted but nearly 50 % on my post must be of his songs, the exalted one, who was especially blessed by the Almighty with a life, spend smiling and spreading smiles as far as I know. Some people do want to remember him by the sad songs which he sang with equal spirit, giving them his all, that the song, situation and composition demanded, the same as he did for other songs. I found this photo, and see who has the widest smile of them all: <a href=”https://in.pinterest.com/pin/46724914867514223/” this and this this .

There are platitudes and eulogies and tributes paid in honour of celebrities, when they pass away, nowadays it is usually on social media. And then there is the sea of humanity, that erupted on a rainy friday of Ramadhan 1980 on the streets of Bandra and Juhu. It was 1980, not the time when the dwellers of this city could afford a new umbrella every monsoon. So it was black umbrellas galore on the tv screen, and many people who were without umbrella, having come out to brave the weather or travelled overnight from other parts of the country. They all had one aim, to accompany their beloved Rafi Sahab to the final destination. To walk two steps alongwith the ‘janaza’ of a ‘nek banda’, with the prayers for the departed soul’s maghfirah on every lip and in the heart.

I realized the real pain of losing someone close and dear 9 years ago, when my elder sister expired. A few days after that, my father said that he didn’t know what to ask from the Almighty in du’aa, as most of my du’aa was for her health and long life. In my turn I told him that though we all are grieving and crying on her passing away, but the tears and sadness is all for us actually. The thought of living on without that dear one, makes us feel lonely and bereft.

A year before she died, I had visited her in Bangalore. She was over the top to have me visit her, and we went to a lot of places. One day we both were going somewhere and we passed a ‘qabrastaan’ where her mother-in-law was buried. She said a prayer and told me we should always recite the prayer whenever we pass a qabrastan. The prayer roughly translates as “today you are resting here, we shall follow you tomorrow, for sure”.

Some similar thoughts on passing away of Rafi sahab are expressed in this song written by Anand Bakshi. This is a unique song in the film ‘Kroadh’ where Amitabh Bachchan is called on stage to pay tribute of Rafi Sahab on his 9th death anniversary programme. Amitabh Bachchan says a few sentences and starts singing the song:

na fankaar tujhsa tere baad aaya…
Mohammed Rafi tu bahot yaad aayaa….

The singer here is Mohammed Aziz who himself has passed away a few months ago. He has sung this song in memory of his idol very feelingly and there are tears in the eyes of Amitabh as he sings on stage and also the audience who are watching it. The scenes of ‘janaaza’ that Amitabh Bachchan is seen as recalling, were truly witnessed by him as well as Anand Bakshi and Laxmikant Pyarelal(possibly). I am sure about Amitabh Bachchan having witnessed it funeral as I have seen a photographs of him with Amjad Khan, Vinod Khanna and Rajesh Khanna. Here is the article where he Amitabh remembers the same.
This article has some rare photos of the fateful day.

The song is so appropriate for this occasion, that I am neglecting to post a song by Rafi Sahab himself. But this song expresses the feelings of Mohammed Aziz, Anand Bakshi and Laxmikant-Pyarelal. Anand Bakshi, as the record holder for having written highest no. of film songs must be the lyricist with the highest no. of songs written for Rafi Sahab too. Laxmikant-Pyarelal are also having similar record with Rafi Sahab. Right from ‘Dosti’ and ‘Parasmani’, they were the one’s who justified the ‘Dosti’ and stood with Rafi Sahab through his thick and thin.

These artists composed and performed the song 9 years after Rafi Sahab’s passing away, and gave words and expression to the feelings of millions of his fans throughout the world.

Blog Day :

4757 Post No. : 16500 Movie Count :

4483

Slowly, steadily, and unnoticeably, the blog reaches yet another blog century. This post is post number 16500 for the blog. In other words, this song is the 165th century post for the blog.

When I thought about writing an article to go with post, I considered going through all the previous century posts. I kept going backwards from 164th century post, 163rd century post. After ten such posts, I gave up. If someone thinks that 164 songs and 164 song articles is a small number, then please try to do that exercise yourself. If one has to make a playlist of these century songs, the entire playlist will play for more than eight hours !

If that is the case for 164 of the choicest songs in the blog, then just imgine how many hours of music the entire blog contains. The blog has been going on at the rate of 3.5 songs a day for 4756 days. Assuming that these three and half songs a day are 12 minutes long then 12 minutes equals 0.2 hours of song every day. Multiply it with 4756. We get 951 hours of song in the blog. 951 hours means 40 days of non stop music if one plays it 24 hours a day without a break.

No normal human being will be able to do it, of course. If a normal music lover decides to savour music from the blog for just one hour a day, then he will have enough masala in the blog to last 951 days, viz 2 years and 8 months. During these 951 days, the blog would add another 195 hours of music, of course. 🙂

I think, some of our regulars have tried it. They should share their experiences with us. Since I post the articles and listen to the song myself, and that too more than once, I must have heard these songs for say 2000 hours already, but in a manner that did not burden me. Rather I must have enjoyed the experience, seeing that I am still at it, after more than 13 years.

The blog completed its 13th birthday recently, on 19 July 2021. Four articles were posted on the occasions. One was a Lata Mangeshkar yearwise songs series, which has been appearing every monday in the blog for the last 45 mondays. Other three articles, by three different regulars, were blog birthday celebration posts. My Lata Mangeshkar song series takes so much time out of me that it does not leave me time for any other article on mondays from me. That is why I could not post any special blog birthday articles. So I decisded to use this century post as century post cum belated blog birthday celebrating writeup. 🙂

As is usual now a days, our century posts are low key affairs. Our regulars do not seem to wait eagerly for them unlike in the past. Even the post writer leaves it till the last moment before he wakes up and starts to look desperately for a song appropriate for the occasion. Surprisingly, despite of such negligence, we always manage to find songs that are eminently suitable for the occasion.

Most of the blog century posts are from the golden era. The blog itself mainly covers songs from that era. But we have songs (including blog century songs) from pre golden era (before 1949) and also songs from post golden era (songs released after 1980).

It is popularly believed that the golden era of HFM was over after 1980. Even then, we continued to get some wonderful songs in HFM. Quite a few songs after 1980 have figured in the blog as blog century songs. Here are their details:

Blog post number Date (Blog day number) Song Movie (Year) Remarks
4100 30 june 2011 (1077) Aisa lage kahin door se Trishaagni (1988)
9800 1 May 2014(2113) Maine tumse kuchh nahin maanga Katha (1983)
13500 3 August 2017(3303) Ye paisa bolta hai Kaala Baazaar (1989)
15200 4 September 2019 (4065) Dil mein Mars hai Mission Mangal (2019) Newest century song in the blog
15500 27 March 2020(4270) Uljhan ho chaahe koi Chambal Ke Daaku (1982) One of the rarest songs
15600 11 May 2020 (4315) Goriya uski deewaani Aag Ka Darya (1990)
16100 15 December 2020 (4533) Hai ye kaisa nasha Chorni (1981)

One can see that as many as six songs from the decade of 1980s have figured i the blog as Blog century posts. But the newest song that has figured as the blog century post is from 2019. This song from Mission Mangal”(2019) became a century post in 2019, viz in the same year when this movie and its songs were released. That is one big surprise for most blog regulars. Even I , who presented the article, was surprised. I had myself forgoten about the fact that I had done something like this, and that too less than two years ago. 🙂

Songs that figure in the blog as blog century songs are special songs in one way or the other. And the speciality varies from one song to another.

The song under discussion is a song that was reasonably popular when the movie was released. The movie was forgotten with time and even this song seemingly went away. There are some songs, that get a second wind for some reasons and this time they become far far popular than what they were the first time round.

I can give quite a few such examples. Here are some examples:

April fool banaya(April fool) was a reasonably popular song of its time that got forgotten with time. In 1983 this song got reived when it was used in an important scene in “Andha Kaanoon”(1983).

Ek chatur naar(Padosan)(1968) was hardly popular during the first run of the movie. It is only after 1980s that this song has become an extremely popular song and it seems to have become more popular and this popularity is here to stay.

Main teri dushman dushman tu meri main naagan to sapera (Nagina) had run its course and had been forgotten. The song earned huge popularity in march 2018, thanks to reasons that had nothing to do be music and Indians. Non Indians popularised this song thanks to their childish pranks on the field of cricket. My writeup on this song described the funny episode leading to the revival of this song in this article.

The song under discussion got its second wind thanks to dance competion shows that have become popular on Indian TV. On these dance songs, ordinary folks dance on some olf Hindi film dance songs. In one episode one middle aged man, Sanjeev Sriastava (a ka Dabbu Uncle) performed dance on stage on this song alongwith his wife and took the TV audience by storm. Even Govinda, who originally danced on this song found Dabbu Uncle’s dance cute. This song was performed on screen by Govinda and Neelam. On a dance show, both of them were invited as judges. This song had earned such popularity by then that the two of then were asked to come on stage and dance on the song, three decades after they had originally danced on this song on screen. And they obliged.

And here is Dabbu uncle getting to perform with Govinda himself.

It goes without saying that this is one song that has been repopularised by an ordinary man. That is the power of an ordinar man. 🙂

The movie the song belonged to was “Khudgarz”(1987). The movie was produced and directed by Rakesh Roshan for Fimkraft, Bombay. The movie had Jeetendra, Shatrughan Sinha, Govinda, Bhanupriya, Amrita Singh, Neelam Kothari, Kadar Khan, Kiran Kumar, Saeed Jaffrey, Sudhir Dalvi,Sushma Seth, Praveen Kumar, Sangeeta Naik, Ghanshyam, Dinesh Hingoo, Satyen Kapoo, Mac Mohan, Master Javed Hyder etc in it. Rishi Kapoor and Abhi Bhattacharya had figured in guest appearances in the movie.

The movie was based on the story “Kane and Abel” penned by Jeffrey Archer without acknowedgement. Jeffrey Archer accused the maker of plagiarising his intellectual right without paying for it. It was the first time that a movie produced by Rakesh Roshan hit the jackpot at the box office. The movie was subsequently made in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Odia etc as well.

Here is this song from “Khudgarz”(1987). It is sung by Md Aziz and Sadhana Sargam. Indeewar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.
Since it is the dance on the song that has repopularised the song, I was curous to know who was the dance master. I had to watch the movie for a few mintes, till the first song appeared on screen, accompanied by credits. According to credits Dances are choreographed by Suresh Bhatt. His assistants were Aruna and Sujata.

Here is this fantastic song. It is a song that has to be savoured by watching its video. The song, and its picturisation has earned enormous popularity on YT channels which was hardly the case a few years ago.

The movie makes its debut in the blog with this song.

With this song, the blog now had 16500 song posts in it. I take this opportunity to thank one and all whose continuous support and encouragement keeps fuelling this labour of love musical bandwagon. Like the lyrics of this song, eve for us in the blog “dil bahalta hai mera aapke (is blog pe) aa jaane se”. Keep visiting, keep commenting, and keep supporting us with your encouragement. We still have lots and lots of musical gems to discover and savour.

Blog Day :

Today’s song is from the movie ‘Jurm-1990’.

By the standards of this blog ‘Jurm-1990’ is a very recent movie. This movie made made its debut on the blog during its early days, viz on 12.09.2008 with its ‘heart-touching’ song ‘jab koi baat bigad jaaye, jab koi mushqil pad jaaye’. This song is said to be inspired by the song “500 miles” (Peter Paul & Mary version/ brothers four version).

Today we are going to listen to the second song from this movie. This song ‘marne ke dar se mere dil’ is said to be inspired by Madonna’s “La Isla Bonita”.

Today’s song is from the ‘1986’ movie ‘Begaanaa’. It may be a recent movie by the standards of the blog, but it had made its debut on the blog on 19.08.2008 with its nice touching song sung by Kishore Kumar.

Today we are adding the second song of this movie on 25 january 2021 that is 4542 days after the movie made its debut on 19 august 2008 !.

“Begaanaa-1986” was directed by Ambrish Sangal for ‘Murghan Enterprise’. It was produced by Shyam Sunder Shivdasani. It had Kumar Gaurav, Rati Agnihotri, Dharmendra, Raj Kiran, Deepti Naval, Amrish Puri, Manmohan Krishna, Arun Bakshi, Mohan Choti, Aruna Irani, Mac Mohan, Om Shivpuri, Sudhir, Kalpana Iyer, Leena Das, Arjun Thapar and others.

Story of this movie was written by Mushtaq Jalili.

This movie was passed by Censor Board on 30.01.1986

‘Begaanaa-1986’ had six songs (including one multiple version song, which has already been posted on the blog) penned by Anjaan and composed to music by Annu Malik. Asha Bhonsle, Kishore Kumar and Mohd Aziz were the singers for the songs of this movie.

Today we are going to listen to a duet song sung by Asha Bhonsle and Mohd Aziz. It is lip synced by Rati Agnihotri and Kumar Gaurav respectively on screen. This song happens on the ‘annual day’ function of their college where there is a music competition between the current students and ex-students of the college.

I have not watched this movie except the today’s song which happens immediately after the movie starts. I could not locate the video of the song;

Lyrics of the today’s song are by Anjaan and music is composed by Annu Malik.

let us now listen to today’s song which has some nice verses written by Anjaan.

(Note: -Today’s song has also broken the record of the ‘longest gap in days between the debut song and the second song of a movie’, which was 4540 days. 😊

Song-Waqt ke saath har zakhm bharta nahin(Begaana)(1986) Singers-Md Aziz, Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Anjaan, MD-Anu Malik

Lyrics

chal rahaa hoon
dil mein mere phir
chalne ki khushi hai
aanewaale kal ki soorat meri
aankhon mein basi hai
mar chuke hain wo jo thhak kar
raaste mein baithh jaayen
waqt se ladtaa rahaa main
waqt ka maaraa nahin hoon

waqt ke saath har
zakhm bhartaa nahin
waqt ke saath har
zakhm bhartaa nahin
phir bhi jeete hain sab
koyi martaa nahin
phir bhi jeete hain sab
koyi martaa nahin
waqt ka zakhm sah jaayen
aise hain kam
waqt ka zakhm sah jaayen
aise hain kam
waqt warnaa guzaare guzartaa nahin

phir bhi jeete hain
koyi martaa nahin

waqt hotaa hai kyaa
ye usey hai pataa
waqt ki aag mein jo jalaa hai
waqt ka doosra naam taqdeer hai
zor qismat pe kiska chalaa hai
waqt ki thhokaren choor kar dein jise
wo bikhar ke sambhaltaa nahin ee ee
waqt ka zakhm sah jaayen
aise hain kam
waqt warnaa guzaare guzartaa nahin

phir bhi jeete hain sab
koyi martaa nahin

dhoop ban ke kabhi
chhaaon ban ke kabhi
waqt chehre badaltaa rahegaa
waqt ki thhokaren khaa ke bhi aadmi
yoon hi girtaa sambhaltaa rahegaa
wo hai kyaa aadmi
apni himmat se jo
waqt ka rukh badaltaa nahin ee ee
waqt ke saath har
zakhm bhartaa nahin
phir bhi jeete hain sab
koyi martaa nahin
phir bhi jeete hain sab
koyi martaa nahin

waqt ki dhundh se
ham jo guzren kabhi
raah soojhe naa koyi kahin
ho o o

aati jaati rahi
waqt ki aandhiyaan
chaand sooraj bujhe to nahin ee ee
chaand sooraj bujhe to nahin

waqt hai be-raham
kar le kuchh bhi sitam
waqt hai be-raham
kar le kuchh bhi sitam
waqt hamse judaa to nahin
jeete ji kyun maren ae
waqt se kyun daren
waqt apnaa khudaa to nahin ee ee
waqt apnaa khudaa to nahin ee ee
waqt apnaa khudaa to nahin ee
waqt apnaa khudaa to nahin

Today (2 july 2020) is the 66th birth anniversary of Sayeed Mohammed Aziz-un-Nabi, better known as singer Mohammed Aziz (2 July 1954 – 27 November 2018).

I was under the impression that he made his debut as a playback singer in 1970s. I was mistaking him with Anwar, who began his career in 1970s. Mohammad Aziz made his debut as a playback singer in HFM in 1984. He shot to fame with “Main mard taange waala”, the title song of “Mard”(1985). He then sung some other memorable songs. One of them being “Mai se meena se na saaqi se”.

On the occasion of his birth anniversary, here is a song from “Aakhir Kyon”(1985). This song is sung by Md Aziz. Indeewar is the lyricist. Music is composed by Rajesh Roshan.

The song gets played on a radio / two in one while Rajesh Khanna and Smita Patil, playing an estranged couple, look on.

The lyrics of the song are quite inspirational. The lyrics makes this song a forgotten gem.

Lyrics of this song were sent to me by Avinash Scrapwala.

Song-Ek andhera laakh sitaare (Aakhir Kyon)(1985) Singer-Md Aziz, Lyrics-Indeewar, MD-Rajesh Roshan

Lyrics

hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm hmm
hmm hmm
hmm hmm hmm

ek andheraa laakh sitaaare ae
ek niraasha laakh sahaare
sabse badi saugaat hai jeewan
naadaan hain jo jeewan se haare ae
ek andheraa laakh sitaaare ae
ek niraasha laakh sahaare
sabse badi ee saugaat hai jeewan
naadaan hai jo jeewan se haare ae
ek andheraa laakh sitaare ae ae

duniya ki ye bagiyaa aisi
jitney kaanten phool bhi utne
duniya ki ye ae ae bagiyaa aisi
jitney kaanten phool bhi utne
daaman mein khud aa jaayenge
jinki taraf tu haath pasaaare
ek andheraa laakh sitaare ae

beete huye kal ki khaatir tu
aanewaala kal mat khona
beete hue kal ki khaatir tu
aanewaala kal mat khona
jaane kaun kahaan se aakar
raahen teri phir se sanwaaare ae
ek andheraa laakh sitaare ae

dukh se agar pehchaan na ho to
kaisaa sukh aur kaisi khushiyaan
dukh se agar pehchaan na ho to
kaisaa sukh aur kaisi khushiyaan
toofaanon se lad kar hi to
lagte hain saahil kitne pyaaare ae
ek andheraa laakh sitaaare
ek niraasha laakh sahaaare
sabse badi saugaat hai jeewan
naadaan hain jo jeewan se haare ae
ek andheraa laakh sitaare ae ae ae

Hullo Atuldom

Ideally this post should have come last year, when this veteran of about a few hundred movies, turned 80. But then that has not happened.
I have decided that we shall not let the occasion go unnoticed. And in south India, the celebration for a person turning 80 is normally on completing 81, as the system of calculating the auspicious date to celebrate says that the person should have witnessed a 1000 full moons in his life, with the life being said to have started after the 1st birthday. Etc. Etc. Etc.

Whatever be the logic, the celebration called “Sadabhishekam” is after the person crosses 81 and our celebrity is turning 81 today. So here we are wishing this veteran a Happy 81st birthday.

He was born Syed Ishtiaq Ahmed Jafri on 29th March 1939 in Amritsar. He made his first screen appearance at the young age of 11 or 12. B.R.Chopra’s “Afsana” was the starting point followed by “Ab Dilli Door Nahin”, “Hum Panchi ek Daal ke”, “Do Bigha Zameen”, “Aar Paar” etc. AVM’s “Bhabhi” saw him in his first role of a grownup. And then there was no looking back and we have seen him in movies till 2017- a really long career. He played a leading man in a few movies before finding his comic timing in “Brahmachari”.

He has had many famous songs filmed on him -“Paas baitho tabiyat bahal jayegi”, “In pyar ki raahon mein”, we have seen him shaking a leg when Shamshad Begum sang, for Kumkum’s debut in movies, “kabhi aar kabhi paar”. This post introduces us to the person whose 81st birthday it is today.

Yes we are wishing “Soorma Bhopali” of Sholay a.k.a father of Jaaved and Naaved Jaafri of ‘Booogie Boogie’ fame. Simply put we are celebrating comedian Jagdeep’s birthday.

He may have done around 100 movies prior to “Sholay” but when Salim-Javed wrote the character of ‘Soorma Bhopali’ it changed Jagdeep’s fortunes forever. He was seen in many movies after “Sholay” too but very few remember him as the sidekick of Gopi (Mithun Chakravarty) ‘Kabari” in Surakksha”” (1979); ‘Chandu alias James Bond’ in the 1977 release “Agent Vinod”; he had a tiny-blink-n-miss role in Feroz Khan’s “Qurbani”. Jagdeep was forever requested to reappraise his Soorma Bhopali, atleast once, in many subsequent movies. He himself wrote and directed a movie with the title “Soorma Bhopali” in 1988. I don’t know much about that movie other than the fact that it had a whole lot of Jagdeep’s co-actors from “Sholay” making guest and special appearances in that movie. IMDB.com gives the list of actors as Agha, Amitabh Bachchan, Master Bhagwan, Birbal, Brahmachari, Danny, Dharmendra; Aruna Irani appears to be the sole female in the starcast.

I have chosen a song from this 1988 movie to accompany this post. The music directors were Dilip Sen- Sameer Sen and songs were written by Asad Bhopali, Jaan Nissar Akhtar and Jagdeep himself has written a song. It was a difficult task selecting a song from this movie as Jagdeep has also sung a few songs in the movie. But I finally decided that we will have a song that accompanies the movie’s credits that is what I have deduced from the available clip. This song is sung by Mohd Aziz and Jagdeep and Asad Bhopali is the lyricist. As I was writing the lyrics I caught the names of lot more actors than those that I have mentioned who were common to Sholay and this movie.

Here is wishing our very own Soorma Bhopali, who had a one-liner to his character in Sholay that said “Soorma Bhopali aise nahin hai”, A very Healthy and happy Birthday.

Lyrics

assalaam vaalekkum

aao hanste hanste
aur jaao hanste hanste
paan khaalo
aur issi baat pe bajaao taali

ke main hoon soorma bhopali
arre haan soorma bhopali

miyaan haan soorma bhopali
main na rahoon Bhopal mein
toh sheher lage hai khaali ee ee
main hoon soorma bhopali
miyaan haan soorma bhopali

yeh mera bhopal hai
jo pyaar se maalaamaal hai
bairagadh se T T Nagar tak
jo hai yahaan khush-haal hai
moti masjid jaama masjid
Taj ul Masjid dekh kar
jo bhi dekhe birla mandir
chamak uthhe hai uski nazar
kamlapati raani ka mahal hai
beech mein donon taalon ke
jaise meri naak hai pyaare
beech mein donon gaalon ke
meri chaal anokhi sabse
meri chaal anokhi sabse
meri ada hai niraali ee ee
main hoon soorma bhopali
miyaan haan soorma bhopali

meri cycle meri dulhan hai
isko saja ke rakhta hoon
ise akela jab bhi chhodoon
taala laga ke rakhta hoon
logon meri soorat pe na jaao
dil hai mera aaine jaisa
mujhse meri ammi ne kahaa thha
beta haath ka mail hai paisa

paise ki parwaah na karna
bhale kaam mein rehna aage
uske karam par rakhna bharosa
woh jab chaahe kismat jaage
ooparwaala
ooparwaala kadam kadam par
kare teri rakhwaali ee ee
main hoon soorma bhopali
arre haan soorma bhopali
main na rahoon bhopal mein
toh sheher lage hai khaali ee ee
main hoon soorma bhopali
miyaan haan soorma bhopali
main hoon soorma bhopali
miyaan haan soorma bhopali
