In this post I am presenting a song from the movie ‘Aaj Ki Dhaaraa-1977’. This movie was recently introduced on the blog by our Shri Satyajit Rajurkar. In the first song from the movie we had a song penned by Indeewar and sung by Kishore Kumar. In today’s post I am presenting a song penned by Naqsh Lyallpuri.

“Aaj Ki Dhaaraa-1977” was directed by Mukul Dutt for ‘Dee Bee Films, Bombay’. It was produced by Dewan Kapur. It has Waheeda Rehman (in special appearance), Rehana Sultan, Mahendra Sandhu, Padma Khanna, Pradeep Kumar, with Karan Dewan, Mohan Choti, Birbal, Moolchand, Kalpana, Praveen Pal, Paul Sharma, Lolita Chatterjee, Jankidas, Ranjeet, and Danny Denzongpa. Screenplay of this movie was written by Bimal Dutt and dialogues were written by Rahi Masoom Raza. The story of this movie was by Mukul Dutt who was also the director of this movie.

“Aaj Ki Dhaaraa-1977” seems to be an obscure movie of its time or it was not released at all (some sources mention it as an ‘unreleased movie’). HFGK Vol-V (1971-1980) mentions that the promotion booklets of this movie mentioned its’ title as ‘Aaj Ki Radha’, and even the Gramophone records of this movie were released with the same titles. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 04.10.1977 with ‘A’ certificate i.e. restricting viewing certificate, and this movie seems to be marred by some controversy as it was released with a different title ‘Aaj Ki Dhaaraa’ and not as ‘Aaj Ki Radha’.

As mentioned above this movie has four songs. Three were written by Naqsh Lyallpuri and one by Indeewar. Music for this movie was composed by Sapan-Jagmohan. Singer Asha Bhonsle sung three solos and Kishore Kumar has one solo song in this movie.

Today’s song is sung by Asha Bhonsle. This song has some meaningful lyrics but this song seems to have ended up as an obscure and forgotten song. Naqsh Lyallpuri is the lyricist. He is well known for his sensible meaningful lyrics and his ‘narm o naazuk shaayaree’. The lyrics in this song may have been penned from first hand experiences of his sufferings in real life when he was struggling to earn his livelihood and survive.

While presenting the first article in this series I had mentioned the following about his early struggle as;

After partition of the country the family of Naqsh Lyallpuri came to Lucknow. From here started the struggle for the family to earn and sustain living. Naqsh was under pressure to join some job and start earning. Since he was not getting any suitable opportunities in Lucknow he decided to go to Bombay. He left Lucknow without telling his family members, with only two rupees in his pocket, and reached Bombay. He had a ‘pen-friend’ Pradeep Naiyyar in Bombay whom he thought of meeting in order to seek his help for some job. However, when he reached his friend’s place he found that he had gone out of station to Poona for two weeks.

I had then cut short one incidence that he mentioned in an interview to Kamal Sharma on ‘Vividh Bhartee’. When Naqsh Lyallpuri was travelling from Lucknow to Bombay and the train reached at Kalyan Station he thought to eat something. The logic behind this was ‘one should not enter ‘empty stomach’ in a new city, where he was going for his livelihood. He bought ‘poori-saag’ from the last ‘four aanaas’ he had and started eating outside the train while the train had stopped there. As told by him there was no ‘shed’ at the platform. As he started to eat a kite bird grabbed it and flew away. He then left the remaining food there and boarded the train which was about to leave from the station.

Coming to the song, we do not know the context and situation of this song as the movie is not available on internet as of now.

Let us now listen to this song which is sung by Asha Bhonsle. IMHO this song must feature in the list of top songs created by Naqsh Lyallpuri-Asha Bhonsle combination.

Song-Maine zindagee kee talaash mein sabhee raaston se guzar liyaa (Aaj Ki Dhaaraa)(1977) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-Naqsh Llayalpuri, MD-Sapan Jagmohan

Lyrics

maine zindagee kee talaash mein
sabhee raaston se guzar liyaa
kabhee hans liyaa
kabhee ro liyaa
kabhee jee liyaa aa
kabhee mar liyaa
maine zindagee kee talaash mein
sabhee raaston se guzar liyaa
kabhee hans liyaa
kabhee ro liyaa
kabhee jee liyaa aa
kabhee mar liyaa
maine zindagee kee talaash mein
sabhee raaston se guzar liyaa

wo aansoo
maine jinko
armaanon kee qeemat jaanaa aa aa
wo aansoo
kabhee jinko
palkon pe na chaahaa laanaa aa
palkon pe na chaahaa laanaa
ruswaayee ke baazaar mein
un ashqon ko
ruswaa kar liyaa
maine zindagee kee talaash mein ae
sabhee raaston se guzar liyaa

ghairon se jo milaa hai
wo dard kahaan kam hogaa aa aa
apnon ko bhee naa mere
marne ka koyee gham hogaa aa
marne ka naheen gham hogaa
jeete jee apnee maut kaa
maine to nazaaraa kar liyaa
maine zindagee kee talaash mein ae
sabhee raaston se guzar liyaa
