Hullo Atuldom

In one of his posts, around 10 years or so ago, Atulji had written (I am not sure of the exact words he had used) that when he spoke about some of the actors of yesteryears, even Amitabh Bachchan, to his young daughter he had to give reference ‘Abhishek Bachchan’s father’.

I faced a similar situation some years back, when I heard of P.L. Santoshi. This was when I had discovered the art of paying attention to every aspect of a film viz. the writer, director, song writer, story writer, dialogue writer etc. So, I googled about P.L. Santoshi & discovered that he was the father of Rajkumar Santoshi- the successful director of films like ‘Damini’, ‘Andaz Apna Apna’, ‘Lajja’ etc.

Pyarelal Santoshi (P.L. Santoshi) was born in Jabalpur , Madhya Pradesh on 7th August 1916. I couldn’t find much on the internet about P.L. Santoshi’s first film etc, but found a lot of names in the list of films directed by him which I have either seen or heard of; ‘Barsaat Ki Raat’, ‘Ham Panchhi Ek Daal Ke’, ‘Sargam'(1950), ‘Ham Ek Hain’ (1946), etc. I also found out that he was a writer as in lyricist, dialogue & screenplay writer.- he was the dialogue writer for ‘Saudagar’ (1973).

P.L. Santoshi had two marriages & Rajkumar Santoshi was his son from the second marriage. He had daughters & a son from the first marriage. PL Santoshi passed away in Mumbai on 7th September 1978 at the age of 62, of Kidney Failure.

Today (8 September 2024) happens to be the 91st birthday of Asha Bhonsle. On this occasion I was trying to find a song that was penned by P L Santoshi and sung by Asha Bhonsle. Initially I came up with songs that had Asha Bhonsle singing alongwith other voices. Finally I realised that “Roop Rupaiyya”(1968) is one movie that combines the two bitrhday artists while offering us not one but several solo songs of Asha Bhonsle.

One song from “Roop Rupaiyya”(1968) was covered in the blog in the past. That song, covered on 19 July 2017 was a Mohammad Rafi solo, namely Yaaron main bada pareshaan .

This movie “Roop Rupaiyya”(1968) has songs penned by P L Santoshi and music composed by Usha Khanna. Jagdeep, Anita, Jayamala, Roma, Mirza Musharraf, Ulhas, Vivek

Here is this nice Asha Bhonsle solo song from “Roop Rupaiyya”(1968).

With this song we wish Asha Bhosle on her 91st birthday. May she have good health & good times with her loved ones.

Song-Chaaron taraf hai chhaaye badraa(Roop Rupaiyya)(1968) Singer-Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-P L Santoshi, MD-Usha Khanna
Chorus

Lyrics

ho ho ho ho ho ho ho ho
yeah

Chaaron taraf hai chhaaye badraa
Chaaron taraf hai chhaaye badraa
badron ke beech chamke bijlee
Chaaron taraf uthh aayin maujen
maujon ke beech machle machhlee

ho ho ho ho ho
ho ho
ho ho ho ho ho
yeah
jhoomer jhooma jhoomer jhooma jhoomer jhooma

ho o o aa aa aa
suhaag ki raat na kare koi baat
jiyara ki baaten kahe bal khaa
suhaag ki raat na kare koi baat
jiyara ki baaten kahe bal khaa
goree ne daalaa resham ka ghoonghat
ghoonghat ke beech damke tikuli
damke bijlee
Chaaron taraf hai chhaaye badraa
badron ke beech chamke bijlee

aa aa aa aa aa aa aa aa
ho ho ho ho ho
ho ho
ho ho ho ho ho

lad gaye nain mil gaye haathh
kahin nahin jaaye wo keh dee hai baat
lad gaye nain mil gaye haathh
kahin nahin jaaye wo keh dee hai baat
goree ke seene mein dil dhhadke
dhadkan ke saathh thhirke hanslee
thhirke hanslee
Chaaron taraf hai chhaaye badraa
badron ke beech chamke bijlee
Chaaron taraf uthh aayin maujen
maujon ke beech machle machhlee
chamke bijlee
