#the Decade of Forties – 1941 – 1950 #
—————————————————————

In this post I am presenting a song from the ‘1950’ movie ‘Dushmani’. This movie had made its debut on the blog on 05.08.2016 with its song ‘aahon mein basaa hai koi ik baar to aajaa’. This song was presented by our Shri Sadanand Kamath jee. The song presented by him is a nice song to listen to and I had quite listened to it then many times. However none of the other songs from this movie have been posted later so far.

‘Dushmani-1950’ was directed by S. Upendra for ‘Manju Films, Bombay’. As per HFGK Vol-II (1941-1950) it was a movie of ‘stunt genre’. It had Bhagwan, Arvind Kumar, Habib, Hari Mohan, Madan Jeet, Khushi Mulwani, Sarla Devi, Usha Shukla, Shaikh and others.

Geet Kosh lists six songs for this movie sung by Shaikh, Sulochana Kadam, Khan Mastana and Vinod. For one song the singer’s name is not mentioned.

Today I present the second song of this movie which is sung by Sulochana Kadam. Regulars on the blog would remember that years back I had shared many songs sung by Sulochana Kadam on the blog. Sulochana Kadam who started her singing career in 1947 was active till her marriage in 1953 in the Hindi Film scenario. She had sung many songs for the Hindi movies from 1950 to 1953.

Here is an extract from a post of Shri Sadanand Kamath about Sulochana Kadam.

Her active playback singing career was from 1947 to 1953. She got married in 1953 to Marathi film actor-director Shamrao Chavan who was also associated with Marathi stage shows. After marriage, probably she got more involved with Marathi films and with her husband’s stage shows than playback singing in Hindi films. With her popularity as a lavani singer, Sulochana Kadam bid farewell to Hindi film industry by 1960. During her stint as a playback singer in Hindi film industry, she sang around 125 songs in 63 films.
One of the little known facts about Sulochana Kadam which I came to know only through Shishir Sharma’s article on her in ‘Beete Huye Din’ is that after bidding farewell to playback singing in Marathi films in the late 60s, she devoted considerable time in philanthropy work. She started doing stage shows of her lavani singing throughout Maharashtra for charities. The money so collected were used for setting up schools, temples, hospitals, orphanages, cremation grounds etc in rural Maharashtra without much of the publicity. It is really a commendable work.

As mentioned by Sadanand jee the estimated number of the songs sung by Sulochana Kadam is around 125*. On our blog, 74 of her songs are showcased. So it is still a long way to go to have all her songs on the blog. However, since there is a possibility of many of her songs not being available, locating her remaining songs may pose a challenge. We can take comfort from the knowledge that music lovers are uploading many obscure songs some of them presumed ‘lost’ till a few years ago. So we can hope to bring more of her songs here on the blog.

Let us now listen to this Sulochana Kadam song from “Dushmani”(1950). Only audio of this song is available. Lyrics are by Kuldeep Talwar and music is composed by V. Ramnath (Wadhwa).

I could not note a few words of the lyrics. I would request listeners with keener ears to please correct me wherever I have missed them.

Interested readers can read about the detailed biography of Sulochana Kadam in this post by Sadanand Kamath jee.
