Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 20
———————————————————

Today is the 83rd birthday of Sulochana Kadam (nee Chavan) whose singing career started, more or less, at the same time that of Lata Mangeshkar and Geeta Dutt. While the latter two playback singers are well known even to the current generation, the name of Sulochana Kadam may not sound familiar to them. However, she is well known as lavani Singer Sulochana Chavan in Maharashtra, South Madhya Pradesh and North Karnataka.

I had already outlined the profile of Sulochana Kadam (b.13/03/1933) while discussing wo aaye hain dil ko qaraar aa gaya hai. So I will skip her detailed biography here. Her active playback singing career was from 1947 to 1953. She got married in 1953 to Marathi film actor-director Shamrao Chavan who was also associated with Marathi stage shows. After mariage, probably she got more involved with Marathi films and with her husband’s stage shows than playback singing in Hindi films. With her popularity as a lavani singer, Sulochana Kadam bid farewell to Hindi film industry by 1960. During her stint as a playback singer in Hindi film industry, she sang around 125 songs in 63 films.

One of the little known facts about Sulochana Kadam which I came to know only through Shishir Sharma’s article on her in ‘Beete Huye Din’ is that after bidding farewell to playback singing in Marathi films in the late 60s, she devoted considerable time in philanthrophy work. She started doing stage shows of her lavani singing throughout Maharashtra for charities. The money so collected were used for setting up schools, temples, hospitals, orphanages, cremation grounds etc in rural Maharashtra without much of the publicity. It is really a commendable work.

On the occasion of the 83rd birthday of Sulochana Kadam, I have selected one of her rarely heard song ‘jahaan koi na ho wahaan chalenge hum balam’ from LAAL DUPATTA (1948). Gyan Dutt has composed the music on the lyrics penned by D N Madhok. The film was produced under the banner of Aakash Chitra and was directed by K B Lall. Rajan Haksar and Madhubala were in the lead roles supported by D K Sapru, Ranjit Kumari, Ulhas, Kesari, Pandit Iqbal, Neelam, Bhagabai etc.

The theme of the song reminds me of the theme of duniyawaalon se door jalne waalon se door. Both these songs, more or less, belong to the same genre but the treatments by way of lyrics and compositions are different. While the former is more on the sad side of the melody, there is some sort of challenge being accepted by in the song under discussion to face the world. And Sulochana Kadam has done full justice in depicting that challenge in her vibrating voice when she sings ‘ mere dam ke saath ho tera dam balam’.

Song-Jahaan koi na ho wahaan chalenge ham balam (Laal Dupatta)(1948) Singer-Sulochana Kadam, Lyrics-D N Madhok, MD-Gyan Dutt

Lyrics

jahaan koi na ho
wahaan chalenge hum balam
duniyaawaale bure hain teri kasam
jahaan koi na ho
jahaan koi na ho
wahaan chalenge hum balam
duniyaawaale bure hain teri kasam
jahaan koi na ho

inhen preet ki reet se kya lena hai
inhen preet ki reet se kya lena hai
inhen pyaar bhare dilon ko dukh dena hai
inhen pyaar bhare dilon ko dukh dena hai
mere dam ke saath ho tera dam balam
duniyaawaale bure hain teri kasam
jahaan koi na ho
jahaan koi na ho
wahaan chalenge hum balam
duniyaawaale bure hain teri kasam
jahaan koi na ho

mujhe kya jo baag mein phool khilen kaliyaan chitkin
mujhe kya jo baag mein phool khilen kaliyaan chitkin
kaliyon ko dekh ke gaaye koyal bhaage phatke
kaliyon ko dekh ke gaaye koyal bhaage phatke
mere dam ke saath ho tera dam balam
duniyaawaale bure hain teri kasam
jahaan koi na ho
jahaan koi na ho
wahaan chalenge hum balam
duniyaawaale bure hain teri kasam
jahaan koi na ho
