“Andhaa Kanoon” (1983) was a movie that was produced by A. Purnachandra Rao & directed by T. Rama Rao. Its music was composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal and lyricist was Anand Bakshi. Kishore Kumar, Asha Bhosle, S.P. Balasubramaniam & Baby Rajeshwari were the playback singer used for the eight songs of the film of which one song Rote rote hansna seekho hanste hanste ronaa was a multi-part song; of which Kishore Kumar had a happy & sad version as also Baby Rajeshwari who got to sing a few lines of the song.
The film was the Bollywood debut of Superstar of Tamil films Rajnikanth. Hema Malini played his sister & Reena Roy his love-interest. Sulochana & Urmila Bhatt were the mother characters & Prem Chopra, Danny & Pran were the negative characters. Amrish Puri & Madhavi had guest appearances & Amitabh Bachchan had a rather long special appearance. Agha & Asrani hawaldaars & Om Shivpuri the Police Commissioner. Dharmendra also makes an appearance towards the end of the film for two short sequences (I wait for that scene every time the movie is aired on TV).
The film had a very straightforward plot of Vijay (Rajnikanth) wanting to avenge the murder of his father & rape of an older sister by the three crooks Amarnath (Prem Chopra), Akbar Ali (Danny) & Anthony D’Cruz (Pran). Durga Devi Singh (Hema Malini) also has the same aim in life & to achieve that she has joined the police force. The film runs through 161 minutes of story time before the brother-sister duo achieve what they had started but not before some cat-n-mouse game happening between the siblings.
The brother manages to kill all the three antagonists without leaving any clue behind. The sister claims that she is an eye-witness for one of the murders; when other witnesses testify that Vijay was all along in police custody. So, he gets away unscathed as they say in Hindi Films:- बाइज़्ज़त बरी (Baa izzat bari)-acquitted with honour. Because, after all, क़ानून तो अंधा होता है (Kanoon Toh Andhaa Hota hai).
I have seen this film a number of times, but not as a whole, so I am not sure three villains were called AMAR AKBAR & ANTHONY. 🙂 But I have read somewhere that it was just a tribute to the superhit Manmohan Desai film. Also this was the first film where Hema Malini didn’t have a romantic hero & her character was on-par with the hero’s. The film was a remake of the Tamil film ‘Sattam Oru Iruttarai’ (1981) which had the late Vijaykanth playing the aggrieved hero.

Today, on the occasion of Balu sir’s anniversary we will have a song that happens in a discotheque. We have Vijay (Rajnikanth) in a garish disguise so that neither Pran & his henchmen nor Hema Malini & her cops can recognize him.
Since it was Rajnikanth’s Hindi debut we had him showcasing his talents in acting out all emotions & also his dancing skills (he had a huge fan-following in South Indian cinema for his dances). In some of his scenes his eyes were shown bloodshot when he is in anger.
In some of my previous posts on S P Balasubramaniam I have mentioned about how his voice was used on Kamal Haasan in ‘Ek Duje Ke Liye’, Salman Khan in ‘Maine Pyar Kiya’ etc. Last year I had contributed this song song which had Jeetendra lip-syncing to SPB’s voice.
Today we remember Balu Sir with this duet which has Asha Bhosle as the female playback for Reena Roy.
