Mukesh and his Co-Singers –10
———————————————-

A post is being added to this series after more than 20 months. Having covered most of the well-known male co-singers and four female co-singers, we continue this post with Mukesh’s association with Sushma Shrestra aka Poornima Shrestra.

Much of her career details can be easily found on the wiki page for Poornima (Singer).

Her singing career in HFM started in late sixties when she was hardly 9-10 years old.

With Mukesh, she has only two songs. One in the film ‘Dharam Karam’ (1975) – “Ik Din Bik Jaayega Maati Ke Mol” and the other in Bappi Lahari’s debut composition in the film Nanha Shikari (1973). The former with its multiple versions has already been covered on the blog and it is the latter that I have taken up in this post.

However, before we move on to today’s song, here is the table of the various multiple versions of the song from ‘Dharam Karam’ and featuring Mukesh. I had a tough time assembling these versions and it appears there are a few more snippet versions not featuring Mukesh.
After hearing all the versions multiple times, I ended up with my head spinning and singing “laa laa lalallallaa” 😊

Also, I am curious to know why the version starting with “Na Ho Bas Mein Tere” has a young Sushma singing for Rekha. All available LP and cassette cover attribute it to Sushma. But self and Satyajit ji who suggested me to cover today’s song are convinced that the voice is that of Asha Bhosle. Any more takers?
I have not watched the film and it is possible that there are a couple of more versions of this song albeit short. Anyway, here is a table of versions of Mukesh for this popular song.

1 Solo with chorus
2 Kishore Kumar and Sushma Shrestra(?)
3 Sushma Shrestra

Coming to today’s post here are the two songs of the combo in a tabular form with the details. Even today’s song has two versions, happy and sad. As I have said earlier, it was Satyajit ji who offered me to present this song on the blog. I have already mentioned it when I had taken up Mukesh’s collaboration with Bappi da in my post for the song “Mohe Kar De Vida” from the film ‘Bazaar Band Karo’ (1974).

S. No Name of song Movie (Year of release) Co-singer if any Composer Lyricist
1 Ik din bik jaayegaa (multiple versions) Dharam Karam (1975) See above table R D Burman Majrooh Sultanpuri
2 Tu hi mera chanda tu hi taara (Happy and Sad) Nanha Shikaari (1973) Bappi Lahiri Yogesh

Nanhaa Shikaari (1973) was directed by RL Desai for Mukherji Brothers.
The film had Deb Mukherji, Bunty, Tanuja, Jairaj, Ram Avtar, et al. Laxmi Chhaya and Iftikhar made special appearance in the film. This was the debut film of the composer and what interested me while watching the credit-titles of the film was that the background music was by Mohd Shafi.

Now wait a minute. Is it the same composer who scored music for a few songs in Hulchul (1951) along with Sajjad Hussain and 19 other films.? It is well known that he scored background music for many films. I request knowledge readers to throw more light on this.

There is nothing much to write in this post, so I thought I would digress from the subject and cover some other aspects related to Mukesh and his actors and composers which I cannot take up as separate posts for obvious reasons. The two lists are short and here they are.

1 Chehre Se Zaraa Aanchal Ek Baar Muskuraa Do (1972) OP Nayyar SH Bihari
2 Ye Dil Le Kar Nazraana Ek Baar Muskuraa Do (1972) OP Nayyar SH Bihari
3 Tu hi mera chanda tu hi taara Nanha Shikaari (1973) Sushma Shrestra Bappi Lahiri Yogesh

And then the great composer for whom Mukesh sang only one solo and three duets with Asha Bhosle.

Mukesh singing for OP Nayyar

1 Jhuka-Jhuka Ke Nigahen Miss Coca Cola (1955) Asha Bhosle Majrooh Sultanpuri
2 Chal Akela, Chal Akela Sambandh (1969) Kavi Pradeep
3 Chehre Se Zaraa Aanchal Ek Baar Muskuraa Do (1972) Asha Bhosle SH Bihari
4 Ye Dil Le Kar Nazraana Ek Baar Muskuraa Do (1972) Asha Bhosle SH Bihari

There was no issue as such for O  Nayyar not involving Mukesh for more of his songs. But then, as I keep saying it was just happenstance. The three duets and especially the solo are a class apart. It is just a loss for music lovers that the two great artists did not collaborate more often.

Well, that was quite a digression and to coming back to today’s post, here is Mukesh singing the happy and sad version with Sushma Shrestra in Bappi Lahari’s debut film ‘Nanha Shikaari’ (1973). I also got in touch with our master screen actors identifier Prakash ji as many people are of the opinion that the child actor for whom Sushma is giving playback is herself on the screen. However, we have concluded that it is the child actor Master Bunty aka Bunty Behl.

Sushma being confused for Asha Bhosle in ‘Dharam Karam’ and for the child actor in today’s film speaks volumes of her playback caliber. Also, I just happened to notice that her birthday was recently on 06 Sept. So, here’s wishing her a belated birthday and all the good health and happiness.

tuhi mera chanda tu hi taara
tu na ho to jag mein ho andhiyaara
tuhi mera chanda tu hi taara
tu na ho to jag mein ho andhiyaara
mere man ke tum sooraj ho
tum se hi mujhmein hai ujiyaara
tum se hi mujhmein hai ujiyaara

tuhi mera chanda tu hi taara
tu na ho to jag me ho andhiyaara

ho ho ho ho
ho ho ho ho
ho ho ho ho

chaahe majhdhaar mein naiya ho
daroon main kyun tum jo khiwaiyya ho
chaahe majhdhaar mein naiyya ho
daroon main kyun tum jo khiwaiyya ho

jeewan ke is madhuban mein
tum mere chhote se kanhaiyya ho
tuhi mera chanda tu hi taara
tu na ho to jag me ho andhiyaara

nare na re na re naha re
na re na re na re na re naha re
hoy

o o o o o

tu na ho to maati hai mera jeewan
tu ho to ye maati ban jaaye kanchan
tu na ho to maati hai mera jeewan
tu ho to ye maati ban jaaye kanchan
tumhen paake bhola sa mera ye bachpan
mahke yoon jaise mahke chandan

tuhi mera chanda tu hi taara
tu na ho to jag me ho andhiyaara

ho ho ho ho
o ho o o

janam janam ka ye pyaara bandhan
toot na jaaye ghabraaye mera man
janam janam ka ye pyaara bandhan
toot na jaaye ghabraaye mera man
sach to yahi hai kabhi sooraj se
hui hai juda na koi uski kiran

tuhi mera chanda tu hi taara
tu na ho to jag mein ho andhiyaara
mere man ke tum sooraj ho
tum se hi mujhmein hai ujiyaara
tum se hi mujhmein hai ujiyaara

tuhi mera chanda tu hi taara

I would like to give the context of the song in “Dharam Karam” that features Rekha-Randhir Kapoor-Raj Kapoor.

‘Ik din bik jaayega’ with the 3 actors is a stage song that shows Rekha as a mute princess who gets her speaking powers as she enjoys the song enacted by Raj Kapoor in her father’s court. The impact of the song is so good that the princess not only starts humming the song but also starts mouthing the words in a child-like fashion. Possibly that is why RD Burman used Sushma Shrestha for the female voice.
