Blog Day :

5920 Post No. : 18534

Today’s song is from the film School Master-1959.

Today, this is my FIRST post here on Atulsongaday and I am very happy. Surprised ? Yes, this is my first post of my 13th year of writing on this Blog. Yesterday, that is on 1st october 2024 I completed 12 years of my writing posts on this Blog.

I retired as General Manager- Marketing from a Pharma company in 1998. Almost immediately I started my own Consultancy firm for Pharma Management Training. This was my second innings, which I successfully ran for 10 years. I trained hundreds of Junior and Senior Pharma Managers. Then I closed my consultancy work and travelled all over India and some foreign countries, with my wife.

I started my third innings when I learned operating Computers in my 71st year in late 2010 and started surfing for old film songs and commenting on various sites and Blogs about old films. My first post was only because of the encouragement and insistence of our ATUL ji. Once it started, I simply enjoyed it and in the last 12 years my achievements in this field are…..

1. 3 books written by me alone.

2. 3 books written with other authors.

Today’s post is my 1425th on this Blog continuously.

More than 150 articles on various other Blogs and sites like Cineplot, Songs of Yore, Sangeet ke Sitare, Geeta Dutt.com, Anmol Fankaswr, Kalyan Friends Club, Memsaabstory.com, Pamir Harvey Blog etc.
I have interviewed several yesteryear artistes’ close relatives and published these interviews.

Written more than 800+ old film reviews and hundreds of comments on Facebook, various sites and Blogs etc.

All this was possible with the encouragement and appreciation I got from my readers, friends, relatives, family and the circle of ATULITES. Thanks to all of them !

Coming back to today’s film, sometime ago, I had said that the Indian audience likes simple stories and happy endings of a film. School Master-1959 was one such film. It was conceived and written and then made into a film in several languages in a period when the trend of family traditions were changing rapidly. The joint family tradition, values passed on through several generations and Human standards were all dissolving under the guise of modernisation. Increasing cost of living, Inflation, less children, smaller houses etc. could be the reasons but the main reason was the sacrifice of old traditions and changing mindsets citing above reasons.

Today, one can see the situation worsening. No one wants to look after old parents. People are ready to spend money to maintain them separately or keeping them in the ‘Old Age Homes’, but not ready to take responsibility in their homes. Long life is becoming undesirable for the oldies now !

Today’s film ” School Master-1959″ was primarily based on the Marathi film ” OON PAUS”-1954 ( Sun Light and rains). This touching story was written by Marathi’s famous writer G.D.Madgulkar, who was into Hindi films for quite some time. The film was directed by Raja Paranjpye. This was not just a remake in Hindi, but Panthulu had put his artistic touch into the film.

The Hindi film was produced and directed by B.R.Panthulu. Music was by Vasant Desai and like any other south film, it had a long list of the Cast members. The major names were Panthulu, Radha Kishen, Ulhas, Shakeela, B.Saroja devi, Kamini Kadam, Raja Gosavi, Achala Sachdev, Lalita Pawar, Karan Dewan, Davis etc. Raja Gosavi and Kamini kadam, who acted in secondary roles in this film, were the popular stars of Marathi films in those days. The story of the film was….

The story is of an honest and upright teacher, who stands for and teaches the values of integrity and truthfulness all his life, and makes an attempt to transform his students and also attempts to fight the undesirable practices in the education system. He struggles to ensure good education for his two sons and one daughter, and even pawns his house to raise money for their sake.

When the sons grow up, they are successful in their careers, have their own families, and start living away from their parents. The school master and his wife are left alone to a life of penury, and eventually they lose their home also, to the legal wrangling of the money lender.

They are forced to seek shelter with their sons. However, now they are forced to live separately, one with each son. The treatment they get in their son’s households, and their desire to see each other, makes them leave their son’s homes and wander in the streets in search of each other.

They are found by one of the master’s old students, who remembers with reverence the teachings he had received. He is now a successful person in life and remembers with gratitude the path shown by his teacher. He buys back the house from the money lender and returns it to his teacher.

Several films in almost every language in India were made on this story. Panthulu himself made Kannada and Telugu versions in 1958, Hindi version in 1959, Malayalam in 1964 and Tamil in 1973. B.R. Panthulu, born in 1910 was a Teacher himself before entering the film line in 1937. Two more Hindi films I remember, were made on this story with some variation….Zindagi-1976 and Baghban-2003.

Today’s song is sung by Mahendra Kapoor and chorus.

One more milestone. Many more to come. Congratulations, Arun ji.

One name missing in the cast is M V Rajamma, the real and reel life wife of B R Pantulu.

Thank you.

As I said in the write up, there was a long list of cast members, hence I only gave few names. Yes, Rajamma was very much there in the film, so were many others not mentioned by me.
