Today’s song (in two parts) is from the ‘C’ grade costume film – Al Hilal-1958 aka Judgement of Allah.

My first encounter with the film Al Hilal was when I read that this was the first film in 1935, which was directed by Mehboob Khan. This film had an interesting history too. Mehboob Khan started his acting career with the Imperial Film Company, as an extra. Ardeshir irani was impressed with this young man’s earnestness in work and thought of making a hero in one of his Silent films. At the last minute E. Billimoria was taken as that film’s Hero and Mehboob Khan lost his first chance. When Irani thought of making a Talkie film Alam Ara, he again decided to make Mehboob as its Hero. His costumes were also stitched with his measurements and Mehboob Khan was excited. However, as advised by some experts,an existing popular Hero Master Vithal was taken as its hero and Mehboob lost his second chance. Third time it was decided to make him the hero opposite Sabita Devi for the film Shehar ka Jaadu, but luck played a ball again and a New entrant Motilal was given that role.

Disappointed Mehboob decided to become a director and wrote a story. He presented it to one partner of Sagar Movietone, Dr. Ambadas Patel, but he was not favourable. Undeterred, Mehboob revised the story and re-presented it to him. This time he was pleased and the film Al Hilal – 1935 was given to Mehboob khan as its Director. He made a Gold out of it and the film became a Hit. That was the beginning of Mehboob Khan-India’s Cecil B. DeMille as a successful Director.

Coming back to today’s film Al Hilal aka Judgement of Allah-1958, it was a costume film made by Akku productions and directed by Akku himself. Music was by Bulo C Rani and the cast was Shakila, Mahipal, Heeralal, Shaikh, Naseem, Sulochan (Ruby Meyers),Indira, Gulab and many other regular C grade artistes. The film was like any other C grade costume films, but it created a history with its qawali ” Hamen to loot liya mil ke Husn Walon ne”, sung by ismail azad Qawwal and party. It became very popular unexpectedly, becase 1958 was the peak of ” The Golden Era” of Hindi film music and it had many competitors.

1958 was the year when so many musical films came. One could see the excellence of lyricists and the art of the Music Directors making those songs popular. In those days the active lyricists were Shakeel Badayuni, Sahir Ludhianvi, Shailendra, Majrooh, Hasrat Jaipuri, Bharat Vyas, Rajendra krishna, Prem Dhawan, Kaifi Azmi, Pradeep to name a few.

Composer Kalyan ji debuted as an independent MD, for the film ‘Samrat Chandragupt’, in which a song written by Nirupa Roy was used. Iqbal Qureshi entered films with “Panchayat” . Anand Bakshi debuted with ‘Bhala Aadmi’ and continued for another 45 years , becoming one who wrote the maximum number of songs for Hindi films.

This was also the year in which, due to a misunderstanding, the long standing bond between Rajendra krishna and C.Ramchandra was broken and it became an additional reason for CR’s downfall from his successful musical career. In this year 3 Qawalis became Hits. First was ‘Sadhana’s ‘ Aaj kyon humse parda hai’. The other 2 qawalis were from B and C grade films. ‘Jungle Princess’ had the first ever qawali’ Adayein teer hain’, which was a competition between Males and females. The third one was a real surprise. Film ‘Al Hilal’ gave ” Hamen to loot liya hai milke husn walon ne”, composed by Bulo C Rani.

Nargis- Sunil Dutt got married on 11th March and Shashi Kapoor- Jeniffer got married on 2nd July. Old time actors Gope and Yaqub expired. Devika Rani got padmashree.

Some of the popular and Hit films were Aakhri Dao-Madan Mohan, Aji Bas Shukriya – Roshan, Amar Deep-C.Ramchandra, Chalti ka naam gaadi, Kala pani, Sitaron se aagey and Solva Saal – S.D.Burman, Dilli ka Thug-Ravi, Howrah Bridge, Phagun and Ragini- O.P.Nayyar, Lala Rukh and Phir Subah Hogi- Khayyam, Madhumati-Salil Chaudhari, Parvarish-Dattaram, Sadhana-N.Datta, Yahudi-Shankar-Jaikishen etc etc.

The qawali “Hamen to loot liya” of this film had the honour of becoming the song of this Blog’s 5000th song, with an unique write up shared by 3 giants – Raja ji, Atul ji and Sudhir ji. The story of the film Al Hilal-1958, as given by Sudhir ji on that occasion was….

” Al Hi-Lal is a story of good vs. evil, the power of Allah vs. the evil designs of Iblees, the devil incarnate. The story is set in an Arabic kingdom. The ruler, Kehraan (played to the hilt by Heeralal) would have his subjects worship him in place of Allah. He deals very cruelly with the followers of the faith (Islam), and punishes them either with banishment from the kingdom or making them blind, or both. Needless to say, such cruel repression would breed a revolt.

Mahipal, who is a slave in the palace, and very close to the king, is actually a believer and an inside person looking for an opportunity to foster a rebellion. Shakila is a poor knife sharpener whose objective in life is the death of Kehraan. For a major part in the film, Shakila masquerades as a boy, and only in the second half of the film she appears as a lady.

The king is blessed with a son. The soothsayers predict that he would be a believer. Kehraan is incensed by this prediction, and starts a reign of torment on his own wife and son. He tries many times to kill him, but the child is saved every time through miracles. As the story progresses, Mahipal is exposed and he escapes from the palace. The prince is banished from the castle to die in the desert. But he is rescued by Shakila, who takes him to her village. Next, the king blinds his own wife and turns her out also.

All players meet together in Shakila’s village and start planning an overthrow of Kehraan. Other events intervene and this group of rebels gets support from a Christian king of a neighboring kingdom. As the story moves towards a closure, there is an inordinately long fight sequence that takes place in the palace, wherein all the main characters are fighting free hand or with swords, with each other. The ending is as expected. Kehraan is slain by Shakila, the young prince ascends the throne and makes the necessary proclamations for setting right the wrongs done by his father, and Mahipal and Shakila live happily ever after.

Today’s song is clearly an indication of the changing tastes of the Indian audience and the composers’ attempts to cope up with it. The influence of western music like Cha Cha Cha and Rock N Roll is showing up obviously in this song Bulo C Rani was not known for this type of music but he did a very good job in this song. The song picturisation is very good and Shakila has done justice to the catchy tune of this song.

The song is in 2 parts – one the street and in the Palace. It is sung with gusto, by Shamshad Begum. Enjoy….

Arun Sir,

The song has shades of Eena Meena Deeka from Aasha (1957), which adds to its appeal.

Honestly, I can’t recall if I had heard this song before, likely because it was overshadowed by the immensely popular qawwali Hamen To Loot Liya. While Chaakuwala Chhuriwala didn’t achieve the same recognition, it’s a lively track worth revisiting. Shamshad Begum’s energetic singing and Bulo C. Rani’s adaptation of western influences make it a hidden gem.

It’s a great example of how composers experimented to cater to the changing tastes of the audience.
