While going through the filmography of the music director, Vanraj Bhatia recently, I found that he had done the music composition mostly for the off-beat or ‘middle of the road’ films, including those of Shyam Benegal’s films. Among his Bollywood masala films which are few, ‘Surkhiyaan’ (1985) was one of them which came as surprise to me because a couple of songs from the film which I had heard long back, sounded to me like that of R D Burman. The title of the film gave the hint that the story may have something to do with print media. With Naseeruddin Shah as a lead actor, I thought that the script of the film would be good for him to agree to work in the film. I watched the film a couple of days back on this assumption.
From the box office reports, ‘Surkhiyaan’ (1985) did not garner enough support from the cinegoers, and the film appeared to have been forgotten. The film was produced by Anil Nagrath and was directed by debutant, Ashok Tyagi. The main actors were Naseeruddin Shah, Moon Moon Sen, Suresh Oberoi and Kulbhushan Kharbanda with the supporting cast of Gulshan Grover, Pinchoo Kapoor, Benjamin Gilani, Bharat Kapoor, A K Hangal, Brahm Bhardwaj, Arun Bakshi etc. Rameshwari, Padmini Kapila, Krishna Dhawan and Dinesh Thakur made friendly appearances in the film. The film belongs to the genre of ‘crime drama’.
The film’s story is centered around an aspiring son who is unhappy about division of the property between his stepsister and himself of his retired father, the newspaper baron. He has got in his share the ownership of a newspaper publication which is not on a financially sound footing. He wants to make his newspaper, the number one. For this, he is looking for catchy headlines (surkhiyaan) every day. His editor suggests rigging up a series of sensational news of criminal varieties thus becoming the topmost newspapers. They also indulge in the exploitation of workforce to cut down the cost. Soon the newspaper climbs the top chart.
The success of his strategy makes the newspaper owner to go to the extreme end in a deceptive way. His editor uses the services of a gangster resulting in more crimes and murders which feed the sensational headlines for the newspaper. In this game, a lawyer, his girlfriend and a couple of gangsters become the pawns for a future headline to announce their deaths. It is the lawyer whose investigation to gather the information about his client leads to the unearthing of the criminal manipulation for the headlines. It appears to me that the film’s story has some resemblances with the story of ‘The Almighty’ by Irving Wallace which I had read many years back.
The film also has a love triangle added to the main theme. The film’s story in some detail is as under:
The film opens with a day light killing of the son of Dharam Prasad (Pinchoo Kapoor), the newspaper baron. Having lost his son, he decides to retire from the business by dividing his business among his daughter, Revati (Rameshwari) and his stepson, Kewal Prasad (Kulbhushan Kharbanda). Kewal Prasad is not happy with the division of the property as he has got as his share, a newspaper which is not running well.
Avinash Prakash (Naseeruddin Shah) is a criminal lawyer, who has successfully pleaded the case of the killer of Dharam Prasad’s son in the court by reducing his capital punishment to imprisonment for life. In the same area, a widower who is a retired schoolteacher (A K Hangal) lives with his son, Shera (Suresh Oberoi) who is in love with Sapna (Moon Moon Sen) his neighbour. But due to his poor financial condition, he is afraid to propose her. Sapna, on the other hand, has only a friendly disposition with Shera as a neighbour.
Shera wants to get rich quickly to marry Sapna, but he is not getting the job. So, he decides to take to small time crime by collaborating with gangster, Jaggu (Narendranath). He gets arrested and is jailed for six-months. After the release from the jail, Shera returns home to find that the lawyer, Avinash is sitting in his house and Sapna has become friendly with him. Shera feels insecure and is angry with Avinash. He is now more determine to become rich quickly.
On the other side, Kewal Prasad is looking to improve the sales of his newspapers to become the topmost newspaper. His Editor (Benjamin Gilani) suggests to getting the catch headlines by giving importance to the news of criminal nature. This strategy works well for the newspapers. But one does not get crime news perpetually. The Editor with the tacit consent of Kewal Prasad, employs a gangster, Shakti Pradhan (Gulshan Grover), brother of an influential Pradhan (Bharat Kapoor) to kidnap Revati, the stepsister of Kewal Prasad and kill her. The gangster plans a strategy by which Shera gets implicated in kidnapping and killing of Revati due to circumstantial evidence. Shera gets arrested.
Sapna seeks legal assistance from Avinash to represent Shera in the court. He agrees without knowing that he, Sapna and Shera have become part of the deadly game played by the editor of the newspaper by which Kewal Prasad has got rid of his stepsister, the competitor in property. At the same time, he has succeeded in creating a rift between Shera and Avinash. There is an inducement for Shera to kill Avinash that the latter is bound to snatch Sapna from him. However, a detailed investigation by Avinash unfolds the criminal manipulations for catchy future headlines, which is to announce the death of Avinash, Sapna and Shera and at the same time facilitating Kewal Prasad to control the entire property of his father. At the end, Kewal Prasad and the editor are exposed by Avinash, and they get arrested.
The story of the film had the potential to be presented as a suspense crime drama. Instead, the film became a mere crime drama presented in a sequential form of the story which failed to hold audience interest. Probably, it would have been better if the manipulative criminal activities of the newspapers were highlighted first for sensational newspaper headlines. Later, after the investigation of the lawyer, the suspense should have been revealed as to why Kewal Prasad’s stepbrother and stepsister got killed in the game of criminal manipulations.
‘Surkhiyaan’ (1985) had five songs of which one song was of two versions. Indeevar (4) and Ashok Tyagi (1) wrote the songs. Vanraj Bhatia composed all the songs. I am presenting the film’s first song, ‘dil zinda rakhne ki liye’ to appear on the Blog. Kishore Kumar and Asha Bhosle sang the song for Naseeruddin Shah and Moon Moon Sen, respectively. Indeevar wrote the song.
The background for the song is that Moon Moon Sen meets Naseeruddin Shah for the first time in connection with the arrest of her neighbour and friend, Suresh Oberoi. She also tells her sad story of how she lost her parent and now living alone. Naseeruddin Shah sympathises with her and the song initially runs in the background. Later, they sing together as their friendship grows to the extent of liking for each other.
