“Heer Ranjha” is a tragic romance from Punjabi literature. The story has been used in many films over the years. I know of the 1970 & 1992 versions. The 1970 version had Priya Rajvansh & Raaj Kumar playing the tragic lovers and the Anil Kapoor- Sridevi played the lovers in the 1992 version.
The 1992 released version of “Heer Ranjha” was produced & directed by Harmesh Malhotra. It had Anupam Kher, Shammi Kapoor, Pankaj Dheer, Tinnu Anand, Sushma Seth, Mangal Dhillon, Preeti Sapru, Rakesh Bedi, Gufi Paintal, Satyen Kappu, Goga Kapoor etc playing supporting cast. The music was by Laxmikant Pyarelal, who used Lata Mangeshkar, Anwar, Mohd Aziz, Mangal Singh, Kavitha Krishnamurthy & Reshma (the Pakistani singer) for its 9 songs that were written by Anand Bakshi.
“Heer Ranjha” (1992) is making its debut today on the occasion of the death anniversary of the Pakistani folk singer Reshma who was awarded the Sitara-i-Imtiaz (Star Of Distinction) award by the Pakistani Government which is the third highest civilian award of that country. She was born in Rajasthan in 1947 & her family migrated to Karachi shortly after partition. She was diagnosed with throat cancer in the 1980s & in later years her health kept deteriorating. She was eventually hospitalized with government help which also helped her pay off her bank loan as well ass put her on a monthly assistance of Rs.10000. Her condition worsened in April of 2013, she went into a Coma in October 2013 & bid goodbye to this world in November 2013.

I had always thought that Reshma had sung only one song in Hindi films but on searching on internet I found she has been used for 4 songs by Laxmi-Pyare, one each by Bappi Lahiri & Dilip Sen – Sameer Sen.
I only know that there was a film in 1992 on the story of ‘Heer Ranjha’ but I don’t know of its fate at the box-office. Today’s song shows the very pretty Sridevi (Heer) drowned in her love for Ranjha (Anil Kapoor). I saw the video of some other song and deduced that Sushma Seth plays a mother character but whose -I don’t know.
