‘Anokha Rishta’ (1986) was produced under the banner of Century Films and was directed by I V Sasi. The film starred Rajesh Khanna in a pivotal role with Sabeeha, Smita Patil (special appearance), Karan Shah, Tanuja, Satish Shah, Beena, Shafi Inamdar, Sukumari, Shaloo etc. The film was a remake of Malayalam film ‘Kanamarayathu’ (1984) which was also directed by I V Sasi. The film’s story was written by Padmarajan which was adapted from a novel, ‘Daddy-Long-Legs’ (1912) written by American writer, Jean Webster. This was the debut film of Sabeeha, daughter of actor, Ameeta and actor-director, Kamran.
I came to know of this film when I watched one of the songs from it. Despite having Rajesh Khanna and Smita Patil in the cast, the film seems to have been forgotten. Probably, this film may not have made ‘noise’ at the box office. I have watched the film which is available on a video sharing platform and find it to be absorbing with an unusual storyline. Probably, ‘Anokha Rishta’ (1986) may be the first Hindi film which had the main theme of the one-sided love story between a teenager girl and a middle-aged man. ‘Lamhe’ (1991) and ‘Joggers Park’ (2003) followed, more or less, the similar theme.
‘Anokha Rishta’ (1986) is about an unusual relationship between Mary, an orphan girl and Robert, her sponsor in an orphanage whom she calls ‘uncle’. She has not met Robert, and she is not aware of his name. That was a condition of the sponsorship. A youth, Bill loves her, but Mary is not interested in him because of his irresponsible behaviour. Robert has been in love with Dr Padma for a long time but could not marry her due to different religious background. Both of them have decided to remain unmarried. In a party, the orphan girl meets Robert without knowing that he is her sponsor. She falls in love with him despite he being more like a father figure to her in terms of his age. Robert discourages her advances but maintains a helping attitude toward her. He even tries to make her lover, Bill mature and responsible so that she gets attached to him. With not getting positive response from Robert, Mary decides to become a nun. The responsibility of convincing Mary to give up her decision to become a nun falls on Robert which results in an emotional climax.
The story in details is as under:
Mary (Sabeeha), an orphan stays in an orphanage run by nuns with Mother (Tanuja) being the in charge. Mary has scored excellent marks in her final high school examination with a bright prospect of getting admission in a good college. So far, she was sponsored by a philanthropist with a condition that his name should not be disclosed to the beneficiary. So, Mary had no opportunity to meet him and never knew his name. She occasionally wrote letters to him which were delivered through nuns.
After the demise of his philanthropist-father, Robert (Rajesh Khanna) takes charge of the family business. Robert decides to continue the sponsorship in his father’s name with confidentiality condition and a further condition that she should not be told about her sponsor’s death so that she continues to write letters to her ‘uncle’. She gets the college admission and now she stays in the college hostel. Robert also provides her with new dresses and some periodical gifts which includes a watch among other things.
Robert has been staying with her mother(Sukumari) and his niece Sherry (Shaloo). Alex Lobo (Shafi Inamdar) and his wife (Beena Banerjee) are his family friends. Robert has been in love with Dr Padma Kapoor (Smita Patil). Due to their different religious backgrounds, their parents have opposed the marriage. So, both have decided to remain unmarried but are in regular touch with each other. Alex’s younger brother, Bill Lobo (Karan Shah) loves Mary, but she is not interested in him due to his irresponsible and immature behaviour. To bring some semblance of responsibility and maturity, Alex gets him employed in Robert’s business.
On her birthday party, Sherry invites Mary along with other college friends in her house. Robert with his adviser, Nasir Khan (Satish Shah), Alex, his wife and Bill are also there at the party. Mary gets introduced to guests including Robert when he sees the watch on her wrist which he had gifted to her, thus revealing her to be the beneficiary of his sponsorship. However, Mary is still unaware of her sponsor. During the party, Mary develops a crush on Robert and falls in love with him. Robert discourages her by not responding to her advances. At the same time, Robert continues to show his helping attitude towards her to come out of her unrequited love. Side by side, Robert encourages Bill, who is desperately in love with Mary, to meet her quite often so that she gets attached to him. Bill is also dreaming of romantic get together with her. But he fails in his attempts woo Mary.
Mary continues her efforts to woo Robert and dreams of romantic sojourns with him. She gets jealous about Robert’s friendship with Dr Padma. She even tries to create misunderstanding between Robert and Dr Padma by a false claim to her that she is pregnant with Robert. Annoyed with this development, Robert calls Mary to his office to know as to the reason for her false claim. At this point, Mary reveals that she loves him and wants to get married to him. Roberts tells her that had he married on time, by this time, he would have a daughter of her age. But he has decided to remain unmarried. Mary leaves his office by retorting that if it is so, she would also remain unmarried.
Mary decides to become a nun and writes a final letter to ‘her uncle’ delivered through Mother with a request that she wants to meet him to personally thank for his support. Robert declines to meet Mary for he is afraid to tell her that it is not his father but his son Robert who is now her sponsor. Dr Padma convinces Robert to meet Mary and also find out a solution so that she gives up her decision to become a nun.
On the day of her departure to Mumbai for onward journey to Italy, Mary is told that her sponsor is waiting to meet her in Mother’s chamber. She runs to the chamber and is dumbstruck to see Robert. She looks at him, overwhelmed and with a guilt face. Robert tells her that all these years whatever gifts he had given to her, she has accepted them. Today, he would give her his last gift and requests her to accept it. He brings Bill to his chamber and tells her that Bill is worthy of her husband who has been madly in love with her for a long time. He is giving her Bill as his last gift. With this, Robert puts Bill’s hand in Mary’s hand. The film ends with Bill and Mary walking together holding their hands. Robert comes out of the chamber and sees Dr Padma waiting for him.
Director, I V Sasi has handled the two love stories in the film in a realistic manner. On the one hand, the love story of Rajesh Khanna and Smita Patil ends with a matured decision. On the other hand, the one-sided love story of Sabeeha has been tackled sensitively in a subtle manner. The film’s climax has been realistically done. The dialogues are crispy. The performance of Rajesh Khanna as a matured middle-aged man without his usual mannerism is very impressive. Smita Patil’s special appearance in the film has turned out to be her substantial role. Sabeeha does well as a debutant except that with Rajesh Khanna, she appears to be less than confidence in her dramatic scenes, probably due to the stress of performing in front of a seasoned actor.
The film would have qualified to be called as a ‘middle of the road’ film but for three out of four songs which I feel do not add value to the film. The one song is the flash-back of romantic sojourn between Rajesh Khanna and Smita Patil. Second and third songs are the dream sequences of romance between Sabeeha and Rajesh Khanna and between Karan Shah and Sabeeha.
‘Anokha Rishta’ (1986) had four songs written by Anand Bakshi and set to music by R D Burman. I am presenting the first song from the film. ‘aaj kaa din naa jaane kyun achchaa lagtaa hai’ to appear on the Blog. The song is rendered by Asha Bhosle which is picturised on Mary (Sabeeha). Rajesh Khanna, Smita Patil, Karan Shah, Beena Banerjee and Satish Shah among others are also present in the song sequence. This song creates a twist in the film’s story. It is during this birthday party of Robert’s niece, Sherry (Shaloo) when Mary (Sabeeha) develops a crush on Robert (Rajesh Khanna) while singing which turns into an unrequited love during the rest of the film.
The tune of this song faintly reminds me of ‘pyaar deewaanaa hotaa hai mastaanaa hotaa hai’ from ‘Kati Patang’ (1970).
