Today’s song is from the very First film made by the Filmistan Studio – Chal Chal Re Naujawan-1944.Title of this film was picked up by Shashadhar Mukherjee, from the mukhda of the popular song from the hit film Bandhan-1940. It was sung by Ashok Kumar.
The first half of the 1940’s decade was not so good for several well known film studios. Firstly more and more actors had started opting for becoming ‘Freelance’, rather than being an employee of a studio. They would work for any studio who gave them their price. Secondly, many studios started breaking up due to several reasons – the foremost being important and famous stars quitting to start their own film studios and film companies. This included not only the actors but also artistes from other departments like direction, music, Cinematography, editing etc. This happened for mainly 2 reasons. 1.Ego problems between actors, directors and even the studio owners and 2. Ambitions of the stars due to their popularity and success in giving Hit Films.
Let us take a look at some studios, in this case….
The first to break was SAGAR MOVIETONE. This very successful film company suddenly went bankrupt. As such, the second world war restrictions and rationing of the Raw Film was becoming a big hindrance, but additionally the British Government’s pressure on the studios to make ‘Propaganda’ films to aid their war efforts was irksome. The Government also linked supply of Raw Film to ‘Propaganda’ films. To allay these obstacles, it became necessary to have a very sound and healthy financial stability of the film studio.
The financial status of Sagar Movietone was very sound but one incident shattered it to pieces. In 1940, Sagar had made a big film “Alibaba” in Hindi and Punjabi. There were 12 good songs in it. The film, made lavishly, was invested with huge money and it would have brought huge profits too. When it was completed, the Sagar owner Chimanbhai Desai and Ranjit owner Chandulal Shah, during a train journey from Surat to Bombay, played cards, gambling as usual, with high stakes. Desai was losing and he staked the film ‘ Alibaba’ in the game. He lost and the film went to Ranjit. Having lost the film, Sagar suddenly became a pauper. Soon it closed down, merging with National Studios.
Prabhat films, once a powerful film studio, where every film was a hit film, became weak and went downhill, when in 1942, V.Shantaram and 12 other people left Prabhat. It all happened because 2 of its owners – S.Fattelal and Vishnupant Damle had become jealous of Shantaram’s success and his popularity. When Shantaram announced his plan to marry company Heroine Jayashree, Fattelal and Damle took advantage of a company rule that ” a director has to leave the company if he marries an employee of the studio ”. Shantaram was forced to leave Prabhat and establish his own studio Raj Kamal Kala Mandir.
New Theatres, Calcutta, a giant in the film industry was already hurt financially by the war conditions. It started breaking in early 40’s as one after another, its star actors and directors started leaving the company. The first to leave was P.C.Barua. Then Saigal, Kidar Sharma, Prithviraj kapoor, and Nitin Bose left. kanan devi also left. For all this , the ego of B.N.Sircar was responsible.
Ranjit studio broke down when its owner Chandulal Shah lost more than a Crore rupees in playing Satta.
Bombay Talkies, after the death of Himanshu Rai in 1940, came to Devika Rani. Though a good actress she was not a good administratot and failed to keep its flock together for long. The skirmish between Amiya Chakravarti and S.Mukherjee and Ashok Kumar and Amiya and Devika Rani made the cause. Frustrated, a group of unhappy artistes, led by S.Mukherjee left Bombay Talkies in 1942. This group included S.Mukherjee, Ashok Kumar, Savak Vachha, Editor Datta Pai, Cameraman Martial Braganza, director Gyan Mukherjee and writer Shahid Lateef etc. They established their own company – Filmistan Studios.
Wadia Movietone split on the issue of making social or action films and one brother Homi Wadia left and started his own Basant pictures. Fearless Nadia also left with Homi Wadia.
A.R.Kardar started his own Kardar Studio.
You will notice how the upheavalin the majot film studios in the first half of the 40’s decade was the causative factor in bringing fresh ideas, new Genres and developing new stars. Under these circumstances Filmistan studios made their first film ‘ Chal Chal Re Naujawan’-in 1944. The cast included Ashok Kumar, Naseem, jagdish Sethi, V.H.Desai, Moti Bai, Rafiq, Navin yagnik etc. Music Director Ghulam Haider gave music for his first and the last film for Filmistan. He had just arrived from Lahore in 1944 and this was his first film in Bombay after he shifted here with Lock, Sock and Barrel.
The story of the film Chal Chal re Naujawan-1944 was….
CHAL CHAL RE NAUJAWAN(1944),was actually a landmark film because it was the DEBUT movie for Filmistan, established by people who had left Bombay Talkies. The moviegoers were awaiting their film.
CCRN was directed by Gyan Mukherjee who also did the story and screenplay. The dialogues were written by the famous Urdu writer Saadat Hassan Manto. One more special feature was that Rafiq Gazanavi, who was a singer and Music Director of repute in later days had acted in this film.
The cast was Ashok Kumar, Naseem Banu, Jagadish Sethi, V.H.Desai, Motibai, Navin Yagnik, Rafiq Gazanavi etc.
The story was about friendship and Betrayal in 2 generations.Thakur Jaipal singh(Jagdish Sethi) and Jamuna Prasad (R.Gazanavi) are friends, but fall out when Jaipal’s wife Savitri (Motibai) is attracted to Jamuna Prasad’s musical skill. She is called Bewafa and thrown out by Jaipal Singh.
Jaipal’s daughter Sumitra(Naseem Banu-mother of Saira Banu) falls in love with Arjun(Ashok Kumar) son of Jamuna Prasad.
Matters clear, but not before Savitri dies in front of Jaipal, who repents.
The film had a lot of background voice over, advising that authoritarianism-like Nazis-is not good for mankind, and the country. Some Nationalist songs are also sung by Ashok kumar. ( Perhaps, it was a Propaganda film.)
All this, however, was not very appealing to viewers and the film proved to be a disappointment, as people were comparing it with Kismet -1943.
There is an unusual name in the cast, that of Naveen Yagnik. Navin was a well known stunt film actor who did social films also with the same ease. Navin was born in Calcutta on 3-10- 1912. His father was from U.P. and mother from Bengal. During school days, he was more interested in sports, dramas and oratory. He did not complete his Matriculation, but ran away to Bombay, to become an actor-against the wishes of his family.
He joined Sagar Films in 1930, as an Extra, without salary. After a few months he got Rs.35 pm, but no credited roles. After an year or so, he left Sagar and joined Mohan Bhavnani’s Ajanta Film company. He first worked in the film ‘ The Mill ‘-34. Unfortunately, this film was banned for 2 years. The film was based on a story by Premchand and depicted the poor conditions of mill workers in Bombay. The Mill Owners’ Association brought pressure on the Government and got the film banned. After 2 years, the film was released as ” Ghareeb Parivar”-36 aka ‘Daya ki Devi’. Two more films and Navin became Hero in the film ” Pyar ki maar”-35.
In her autobiography, actress Hansa Wadkar says,” My Hero in this film was one Navin Yagnik, a handsome boy from U.P. He was very shy and after the shootings, he would quietly sit in one corner reading something. He never joined our drink parties, nor did he participate in any other group activity. I was attracted towards him but he gave no response. He sent me an invitation card for his marriage, when it was fixed.”
He also worked in Minerva Movietone, Prakash pictures, Filmistan and other good banners. Some of his well known films were, Zambo-The ape Man-37, Meri Bhool-37, Divorce-38, Vaasanti-38, Son of Zambo-39, Main Haari-40, Jhoothi Sharm-40, Vasantsena-42, Raja Rani-42, School Master-43, Prithvi Vallabh-43, Chal chal re Naujawan-44 etc. His last recorded film was Bhagwat Mahima-55. In all, he worked in 30 films. Navin Yagnik died on 28-10-1977.
Here is the 8th song from this film, sung by Rafique Ghaznavi and Shamshad Begum. Enjoy….
